Hello everyone!

GAPS diet is designed to help with ADHD treatment. It consists of several stages and takes quite a dedication to follow. It is also quite expensive since you need to buy high quality and sometimes rare food.

In my opinion, the positive effects from this diet make all the effort very well worth it. I have been on this diet for a while now and it really helps me feel way better. I am less irritable and more focused. It also helps to think more clearly and lessens symptoms of my OCD - I know sounds like panacea but please read entire post :)

Now, there is a lot of room for improvement here since it is meant to cure ADD and I still get some symptoms. However, some of my ADD traits(or my laziness who knows:rolleyes:) keep me a little stagnant. I just got up to certain point and now I keep thinking I need to improve this and that but you know I stick to it for three days and forget it for two weeks and return to “normal”(still keeping diet of course) .I started this thread to keep myself focused on the damned thing. :D

I would like to encourage you guys to join me for 30 days and give it a go. I can give you all the info that’s necessary and introduce you to diet roughly.
The diet starts with introduction(first) phase and I will also be coming back to it for long to explain reasons. ;)

So, it’s basically eating healthy food and if it works – hey you have your ADD cured! I am starting in a week from now on 22 November 2014.

P.S. I would like to ask anyone who is going to post skeptical or negative comments not to do it.

Best of luck in your experimentation. I discovered improved overall health when I consulted and worked with a registered dietitian to learn more of the gut-brain connection, but I still struggle quite heavily with adhd related issues.

However, I do feel less foggy in the brain from removing processed foods and choosing more wholesome options. Improving my diet helped tremendously with awareness of what I overlooked nutrition-wise before, and I'm able to make healthier choices knowing how food truly effects me.

I would encourage you to choose your language more wisely when referring to "curing" adhd. You'll find ways to better manage it, however, it doesn't just go away, and many peeps become quite defensive as soon as they hear that term. Also, expecting to cure something that's incurable sets yourself up for repeated internal disappointment.

Wishing you the best in your nutritional adventures.

Update:

I think that if someone looks into the diet it could be a little overwhelming after second thought.

Here is nice approach if someone wanted to take it easy:
http://gapsguide.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/gapsunderwhelm.pdf

There is also a lot of guides on what to eat like this one(it's not ad or anything):
http://www.healthhomehappy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/What-Can-I-Eat-Now-30-Days-On-GAPS-Intro-Sample.pdf

I assure you that it makes you feel better and really works - perhaps you could look at it like it helps to manage ADD if not cure it.

No diet can cure adhd.

It really does help, just to eat better. But, there is no "cure" from changing your diet!
and this diet really does seem radical and complicated...

Even if you don't cook much you can buy more fruit, choose healthier take-out places, etc.
The better you feel, overall, the easier it is to deal with all the rest.

Yes, I encourage you to try this diet I will research it as I have been also learning about the gut/brain connection. I would like to try an elimination diet and would like to have someone to talk to on a regular basis for support. Maybe I can make a diet support group thread, because it is EXTREMELY tough to give up grains like pizza, hamburger buns, candy, pasta etc. EXTREMELY tough. As everyone likes to point out "you can't cure ADHD with diet" you still might notice a dramatic difference in your symptoms so don't knock it until you've tried it. The hard part is the trying it. It is a very daunting task. We need a support group. Even if it dramatically reduced my brain fog, I would still be extraordinarily tempted to eat pizza. Junk food is ridiculously ubiquitous in this country. But these diets may actually cure some people who have ADHD-like symptoms, but not actually have ADHD. As I said in my other thread, if you are allergic to food dyes, you can have symptoms that mimic ADHD, but not actually have ADHD. So there may be people on here who think they have ADHD, but are actually having an allergic reaction. But also, I know there are others on here who may eliminate food dyes and have no reduction in symptoms. We're all different, our biochemistry is so complex, and we've grown up being lied to about what a healthy diet is by Big Food.

Cutting out the majority of sugar I normally want to eat has always helped me greatly but sadly, I can't abandon jam, cake, and gelato forever. No interest in discontinuing my meds but I check out diets regularly for useful info -- would be nice to see what's recommended specifically for ADHD. Thank you!

I'm allergic to dairy and also wheat and stuff upsets my Crohn's...

So therefore, I'm vegan and don't eat pasta and hardly any bread.

I also stay away from sugary things (unless I give in) because this just makes my blood sugar crash.

It has maybe helped me feel healthier but my ADHD is still just as bad. :/

I'm glad to hear your perspective. You've tried the diet approach and it hasn't worked. I applaud you that you are able to stick to this diet, although if you are having severe allergic reactions I guess you don't have a choice. Like I said, I'm open-minded, I realize there are people for whom diet changes will not make a difference and therefore should stick with the meds. However, I'm also sure there are probably people on this forum for whom, elimination diets might have a huge effect on their symptoms, who are unaware of this. I have many of the ADD-PI/SCT symptoms and the meds didn't really work, which is why I am exploring other options, because other options are all I have.

By the way, are you eating mainly fruits and vegetables, or are you eating the many of the delicious but unhealthy gluten-free processed foods?

Okay so first off, I am glad you decided to give it a go Jshect. :)
You mentioned support group. I think we could gather all the people willing to participate in this thread, say up to 4-5 people. I am starting tomorrow so go ahead and PM if you wish and we can start together.

When it comes to diet and it's positive effects there is one very critical thing about it. Any tiny amount of "bad" food causes damage to the gut and kind of takes you a step back. The purpose of the diet is to heal gut wall so it can digest food normally. When it's done you can eat like everyone else without symptoms. If I eat a half of tiny little slice of bread I feel awful afterwards. Therefore if some tries to eat little healthier they get little results and say that it doesn't work. Full dedication needed here.

Another thing is probiotics. It is very important(discovered last week :p) to take multistrain probiotics. Doing only the diet doesn't fully help. I was stuck at some point and stopped improving. When I took probiotics(it's also critical to take correct ones not to make it worse) it was huge difference.

Great, I'll have to look into the GAPS diet. Did you research which multistrain probiotic was the best? Yes, we can try to support one another. All I'm doing is cutting out Gluten, and eat a paleolithic-type diet. GAPS sounds way more involved but hey if it works it is well worth it. I'll look into it. I found the inventor of the GAPS diet and she has an hour posted on her website. Unfortunately, her book is not in E-book format. Good luck with your diet and thanks for the support.

Also, what diet are you doing? On my other thread I started a journal thread for a paleolithic, gluten free diet. I'm still eating grass fed yogurt. Are you doing the GAPS diet? Like I said I don't know much about that diet, but I will educate myself. Lets all get on the same page.

I am on GAPS diet.

When it comes to probiotics it needs to be multistrain and shouldn't contain any GAPS illegal additives. There is a good description on probiotics in the book. Also there is one probiotic created by inventor of this diet but I haven't tried that, plus it's very expensive.

I bought the book on amazon, since I like paper books.

It's called
Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D., Dyslexia, A.D.H.D., Depression, Schizophreniaby Natasha Campbell-McBride

I think there was an "e-book" version somewhere online if you know where to look.

I recommend you to "obtain" the book in whatever way you like. I can give you basic tips on what I learned and answer questions if I can but I am not specialist and I have much to learn as well so it's best if you learn the information right from the source.

Wow, GAPS sounds extremely complicated. Does she cite many studies in her book? I have no clue how to ferment vegetables, although I have heard from other sources that fermented vegetables have many beneficial bacteria. How long does it take to ferment veg. and how do they taste? She said you make your own yogurt. I have no clue how to do that. I'm really going to have to put a lot of research into this diet.

I watched about 40 minutes of the GAPS diet inventor. She said you need to be on the GAPS diet for 2 years to fully heal your gut, not 30 days. Have you started your diet? I will order the book, I guess I am desperate enough to try something radical. Anyways, I'm on here to hold you accountable, did you start your diet?

I just purchased a 250 page ebook on the GAPS diet. I also ordered a supplement which I will tell you about later

Hello everyone!

GAPS diet is designed to help with ADHD treatment. It consists of several stages and takes quite a dedication to follow. It is also quite expensive since you need to buy high quality and sometimes rare food.

Two , well make it three problems - money, consistent dedication and finding that ever so illusive clean kitchen utensil.

I am not against diets
My modification in the food department is pretty maxed out with
Reducing my gluten intake, replacing candy with dried fruit snacks that can with stand temperature ranges inside my car and be eaten safely while driving.

I stated eating raw honey to promote gut health, and am currently replacing my cola with juices containing real fruit.

I am not changing my diet as a specific treatment for my ADD but to promote my over all health. Poor nutrition can cause ADD like symptoms in non-ADD folk it only stands to reason that poor diets would make ADD symptoms worse. I believe dietary modification will increase over all health which in turn can help with ADD symptoms simply because good nutrition helps all of me feel better this is including but is not limited to my brain

I simply have to keep it simple - If I can not pronounce it I don't consider it a food.

The diet you propose is not for me personally but I truly wish you the best outcome.

Very interesting approach, indeed :D

Here ya go:

Oh, and they taste very good if you ask me. I have been slacking off with making these recently. I have to make some more, perhaps this week.

She said you make your own yogurt. I have no clue how to do that
It's really easy. You need to buy special bacteria and let it ferment. There are also nice detailed instructions in the book. Personally I have made homemade kefir, I have yet to try yoghurt. Kefir uses kefir mushroom which you put in the milk, or you could use some bacteria like for youghurt(sold as sachets if I remember well).
Kefir is really delicious man. I only had some problems with I will mention later 'cause it's too long to put here, but really worth trying.

Awesome, give it a good read. It's really interesting if you ask me.

Yes, this 30 day idea is coming from another forum. We improve our diets as much as we can in 30 days, then we start another thread(if it's ok for ADDF) and do some more improvements and so on.

Anyways, I'm on here to hold you accountable, did you start your diet?

Yes, I have been on this diet for about two years now. It has really helped me. But, I am still a little lazy about some of it's elements and I wanted to improve that.
So, today I am fixing first important mistake. I find that sometimes I don't eat for a few hours and then stuff myself and that really is too much for my gut. So today regular meals. I am also going to soak hazelnuts for coconut milk. I heard it's really good stuff! Also, I will look for and perhaps order necessary tools to make sauerkraut preparation easier. I will let you know how the milk tasted tommorow(it takes one day to make).

How is your diet? Have you started GAPS or still reading?:D

So far, I've stuck to my diet. I've basically been eating meats, vegetables, fruits, yogurt, and almonds. I think I haven't eaten any gluten.

I've been eating things that contain more wheat in them lately - feeling pretty crappy and fatigued.

It sucks, cuz it's one of the only things left that tastes pretty good as a vegan.

Do you have any ideas for wheat replacements? (Those who are on the diets above)

How do you not miss wheat?

Awesome. Make sure you take probiotic, it was my mistake for a long time.

First, I have read -it could be wrong so don't get all mad - that vegan diet is very harmful because you avoid meats which are very necessary for our bodies to function properly. Vegan families were generally in worse health according to that source.

Now, the wheat. To me it's not about missing wheat, it's about feeling good. If I eat even tiny amount , within several hours I feel very bad.
When it comes to replacements, you could bake almond coconut bread very tasty and good for occasional baking.

Okay, finally managed to access forums. I seemed like site was down.

Just wanted to report my success with hazelnut milk. It's really good! I have also read that it's possible to thicken it by bringing to near boil temperature, gotta have to try that.

Yes, it wasn't just you. It was down for a bit. Glad the hazelnut milk is working out!

Myself, I've had a couple of bad days, but hopefully today I will get back on track.

Glad, you're back on track. I know how it's sometimes hard to keep things continuous but I found that it's very important to keep doing goal/project despite unavoidable breaks and setbacks. Keep going :D

I felt way way better when I started to eat regularly how I mentioned. Last two days I couldn't do that because I was away from home all day but today I am back and feeling good. I have also bought nice big bowl for sauerkraut preparation, I couldn't find big enough jar with a lid in the store I was is so I am going to another store today, hopefully they will have what I need. I also need to buy Himalayan salt as it's supposedly the best for sauerkraut.
Another thing. I will be visiting a doctor who specializes in GAPS diet in about two weeks. I got a lot of questions.
I will keep ya posted!

Hi Eagle17. How is your diet going? Did you make sauerkraut? I was GFCF for 4 years and felt pretty good until I started making green smoothies. Now I am on a low oxalate diet and feel better than I have felt in years. I make sauerkraut in November and it is delicious. I hope to heal my gut issues so I can include more variety in my diet.

Good thread!

Though it never cured my adhd, my meds worked better and my adhd improved significantly. I've been on it since 2012. I don't go psycho about it and only eat raw actually. I use raw shakes as an adjunct to my diet.

5 years ago I once tried the true gungho raw diet, where raw veggies were all I eat but I lost so much weight I looked like a holocaust survivor.

Functional Medicine is all about this approach as well. There is a Meetup.com group in my area that are doing the elimination diet, learning how to ferment foods, etc. Check out Meetup.com to see if there is one near you.

Also, there are ADD/ADHD, Depression, Anxiety Meetups as well!
