Originally posted by webqueen62 Hello! What type of doctor are you going to see? If you are seeing a general practitioner, you will probably be asked to fill out some questionnaires and to send some to your child's teacher. Once those are reviewed, your gp may refer you to a psychologist for further testing. If you are going straight to a psychologist you can expect to do a historical intake first. Then there will be tests, and what tests are done depends on the psychologist. Some testing that you should consider requesting would be CAPD screening, a Continuous Performance Test, there are three major ones - Conners CPT, TOVA and the IVA. Some psychologists like to do IQ and achievement testing as well, these tests can help tease out other possible co-morbid learning disabilities. Let me know what type of doctor, and I can respond more directly. Good Luck you are on the road to discovery........... Please remember that there's no one way to test for adhd. Some of the things I've learned over nearly 20 yrs of testing for adhd is that CPT"S( computerized, continous performance tests) absolutely Do Not work. Research has found a high rate of false negatives( you really have adhd but it misses you). This is because of the fact that adhd kids often hyperfocus on the computer tests and see them as fun new video games. That has been proven time after time and is the biggest reason to avoid them.In fact , 50% of all adhd's will pass CPT's.They are respected as research tools tho. Overall. checklists trump tests: meaning they are better than even IQ testing, which has long been part of the accepted standard of practice. IQ tests are still valid instruments but specific neuropsychological tests like the WRAML(Wide Range Assessment of Learning & Memory) are favored for testing long and short term memory.Thats where things seem to be moving. |
