I know there's a couple people who play magic: the gathering here!
I'd love to hear from ya guys! I could talk about magic and my decks for HOURS! haha :D

I've currently got 3 decks built...well 4...but the 4th is just a jank deck built of spare commons and uncommons I threw together for the heck of it! lol

I have a decent modern B/G Melira Pod deck, a nice mono white commander deck, and a super cheap budget u/w heroic STD deck.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the decks, or to make some suggestions!
The Standard U/W heroic deck is net decked...but my modern deck is just about all me. It started life as a per-constructed event deck, and has evolved from a relatively budget kitchen table casual deck...into the monster below. And my white commander deck I've done a TON of work on. It started as a 2014 commander structure deck...and I've been tweaking it slowly over time.

Magic- The Gathering.

It's a deck-building card game. I've never played, but it looks interesting.

My major hangup with it is that -as I understand it- there's a card collecting aspect to the decks, with some very expensive special cards.

I have a bug to collect and I'm a completist, so I'd have some serious money and time sink issues if I did start playing.

LOL! you guys are awesome

And that episode of south park was pretty much the greatest thing EVER! haha

My major hangup with it is that -as I understand it- there's a card collecting aspect to the decks, with some very expensive special cards.Yeah :(...the game can be VERY expensive to get into...especially if you want to be competitive.

In this game there's lots of cards that are similar to each other. They do similar things. But usually amongst those similar cards there's 1 that is considered the best...and that one...the best of the group...can be extremely expensive. But if you want to be as competitive as you can be and you plan on playing in tournaments...you're really going to want all the best cards in your deck.
Decks in this game can hit $1,000 pretty easy (for 60 cards). I've spent about $650'ish on my first deck I posted.

The 2 Noble Hierarchs I'm running alone costed me $130 ($65 each). There's other cards that do very similar things as those cards I could've used that cost just pennies...but the Noble Hierarch is just the 'best'...so I had to pay a premium to run them in my deck.

To me it's SO not boring! It's super intense and takes a TON of thinking...and I freaking LOVE building decks! I'll spend literally dozens of hours brewing up my decks on paper before I begin to buy the cards for them. Both of the first 2 decks I've posted have gone through at least a dozen iterations before arriving to where they are now...and they'll still change and evolve further in the future.

I freaking love this game. It's been one of my absolute favorite things in life for many years lol.

They came out with a brand new set of new cards recently...and so I went to a midnight tournament last night to play with the new cards. Was a TON of fun!

You can buy these cards in what they call a 'booster pack'. In a nutshell, a booster includes 15 random cards.
In the tournament I played last night, we were given 6 of these packs...and we all opened our 6 boosters, then we had to build 40 card decks out of the cards we opened.

lol I was SO sad! Everyone was opening all these amazing card and rare cards left and right...I wasn't! /cry! Nothing! :( Just nothing worth money at all.
Lucky I was able to piece together a decently playable deck though out of my pile (ABZAN OR GTFO! :giggle:).

There was 3 rounds.
Round 1 I went against this guy who I LOVE. lol...he's hard to explain...but he's a very quiet and very very polite guy...SUPER nice. I just love playing against this guy cause he's just so nice! lol...he got into the game cause his daughter was into it, so he thought he'd learn for her sake...turns out he's DAMN good at this game! He's one of the only guys who's consistently able to defeat me!
In fact...I've yet to win a game vs him! haha...but it's funny, cause I so don't mind losing to him! If there's one person I'm happy to lose against...it's this guy! And he's always so damned gracious about his wins!
And yep...he defeated me 2 games in a row last night! :D Each round we play best out of 3 vs. a random opponent.
It's not that he crushed me...I put in a ton of fight...it's just his deck just straight up had more bombs than mine did.

But...then in the final 2 rounds, I went undefeated. I'm not trying to brag...but I do like winning! :p

Ended up in 3rd place, which was nice...won a few extra booster packs, and I FINALLY pulled a decent card out of one of the packs I won. A card I've been wanting...so that made my night! :D

There's a few more of these events taking place at the shop this weekend...think I'm going to try and attend at least one more. It's SO much fun building decks from scratch like that! :)

But man...I can't keep on with this game like this. Starting to really feel quite burnt out from it!

who is "they" ...?

The people who stage the recognized tournaments for this type of game. Players strategically assemble their own personal decks of cards that they use as resources in playing the game, each type of card has a place in the strategy of the game in terms of being able to be played against other cards and so on, and the card that psychopathetic is disappointed about was apparently judged to be such a huge advantage (for any player who had one) that it could potentially ruin the tournaments by skewing the scores.

No, not really, but because players have so much choice of cards they have to sort of police the results. If one certain card becomes almost a guaranteed win, then the game is kind of wrecked for anyone who doesn't have it.

Please don't judge other people's hobbies without actually experiencing them for yourself. Sometimes hobbies hold a large amount of meaning to an individual and it can be hurtful when you disparage them.

Just to be clear, I know that most if not all of the replies were written in humor and I assume that psychopathetic took them as such. However, misunderstandings can happen, especially when communicating through writing. Please keep this in mind when posting in a manner that can be perceived in a negative light.

I played the game 20 years or so ago for 6 years and I'll try to explain the appeal behind it and its history. :)

The game is based on the albums of collectible cards that children buy for the sake of collecting and trading with friends. 21 years ago or so, Wizards of the coast expanded on that idea and added a playable element to those cards inventing the idea of a tradable card game. It started off with a basic set of around 300 cards, with 60 card starter decks which included also the resources needed to cast spells called lands and 15 card booster packs without lands. The cards were separated into the different rarities: common, uncommon and rare, booster packs included 1 rare, 4 uncommon cards and 10 common cards. The starter decks allowed people to buy one and play immediately with friends.

So initially people bought a single deck and played with each other, however, collecting cards is fun and trading with friends is also fun, so people bought more cards and traded the duplicates trying to complete their collections. The game itself combines the randomness of poker, the strategy of board games such as risk and a unique element at the time which was deck building. You see, one of the challenges of the game is to create a deck out of the cards you collected that will be well balanced and be able to beat other decks made out of the huge pool of cards. The game is fast paced and each game relies on both skill and luck and the quality of the cards used and the deck built. Most games last around 20 to 30 minutes.

To make the game more competitive and appealing, Wizards copied the idea of large tournaments with prize money from poker, with prizes of close to one million dollars for the first ever tournament and made it into a global sport by arranging qualifies allover the world with pries of admission to the larger tournament.

Every year Wizards released multiple sets each adding more cards to the overall pull of cards and this has been going on for more than 20 years. Each set typically has a few cards that are key components of decks ranging from fast decks with low cost spells (minions) to complex combo decks that are designed to use interactions between different cards to win. Other decks include larger creature decks relying on cards that generate resources and high value expensive cards and control oriented decks that are designed to react to the opponents moves by destroying their resources and establishing control of the battlefield.

To increase the collecting element, wizards stopped selling the oldest set when a new set comes out only leaving two cycles of sets (Each cycle includes a core set and two expansions) at any given time to be sold in stores. This means that cards of older sets can only be collected through trading or buying from other collectors. Every set has a certain amount of cards that are more powerful or have strong interactions with other cards and the demand for those cards increased as time passed and more people started playing the game.

To limit the advantage of older players and constantly shake up the playing field creating demand for newer cards, most of the tournaments are limited to sets being sold at the time of the tournaments. However, there are multiple different formats that use different rules and restrictions over which cards a player can use in their decks.

Now, you have to remember that the game came out in 1993 and the first sets were released with a very low supply and demand so there is a very limited supply of the oldest cards and sets, additionally Wizards had little ability to access how powerful cards would be compared to others. This created a situation were certain cards in the first few sets have slowly increased in value as the years went by. Cards that were once worth a few dollars suddenly jumped up in price with the most valuable cards being worth up to 5000 dollars. I haven't played the game since I was 20 or so, however, the cards that my brothers and I had collected at the time have increased in value from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars worth of cards. Thus, the collectable card game has taken on properties of art collection and the appeal has increased as a result.

The reason why certain cards are banned in every format is that those cards are just too powerful in combination with other cards and consequently, decks with those cards dominate the tournament scene. This makes the tournaments less fun and interesting as most games are between copies of the same deck because that deck has the highest chance to win the tournament.

The problem is that before the ban, the banned card typically increases in price as there is a large amount of demand for it as everyone wants the card for their decks. Once the card is banned the demand drastically falls and the price can fall with it meaning that people lose money as a result of the ban. Additionally, cards that worked well with the banned card can also decrease in value because a deck is made out of multiple cards and can become ineffective when one of the core cards of the deck is banned. This is especially true in combo decks where one card is the driving engine of the combo.

In Psycho's case, he spent a large amount of money buying all the cards needed to construct his deck, assuming that he will be able to use the deck in tournaments and hopefully win a prize and get back some of the money. That's why he was sad about the card getting banned and it has nothing to do with being an aspie. Luckily, he can still play with the cards with friends and cards are typically only banned in a limited amount of formats so the value won't decrease too much as a result of the ban and might even increase after enough time.

No matter what, sorry to hear of the ban Psycho, I hope you are able to construct a different deck that you enjoy playing and that works well in tournaments and the new meta. :grouphug:

I'm pretty sure the Aspie comment was more related to the intense dedication to (and enthusiastic description of) the game as a whole.

I hope my comments weren't some that sounded disparaging, because they certainly weren't meant that way - I was trying to give a super-compressed explanation of the difficulty about a banned card to someone who wasn't involved in the game at all.

Awwww, yeah I also wasn't trying to be mean to him.

I actually hadn't even read the banned comment part yet when I posted that, I was just talking about how detailed and enthusiastic about the game he was in his first post.

His first post reminded me of my many MBTI threads.

So I guess I just saw his dedication and made a connection.

He also has mentioned (and we've joked) about him possibly being an aspie in some of his earlier posts.

I didn't mean to place my comment right after something bad happened to him, that was poor timing and lack of reading on my end.

(I hope for psycho that you figure something else out that works great :grouphug:)

Also probably typical aspie mistake on my end to submit a comment that may not be too great for the situation. :o

lol I've felt no disrespect from any one here in these comments. Even Abi's comment about this game sounding boring to him gave me a warm chuckle and a grin. I can absolutely see how this game could be hella boring to some people.

Just to be clear, I know that most if not all of the replies were written in humor and I assume that psychopathetic took them as such.

Awww! Thanks for standing up for me Taz! I really appreciate that!!
Also, awesome write up about magic's history!
I have such a difficult time trying to explain this to people who've never played a TCG (Trading Card Game) before.

That's awesome! Thanks for explaining things so extremely clearly!!

You seem awfully like an aspie :)

haha I so did not get a single hint of any kind of negative from this comment at all!
/hearts his Bells!

I wonder if I should ask my p-doc about this. There was a therapist who specialized in autism who mentioned to my therapist I was seeing that he strongly suspected I had asperger's several years ago. He really wanted to work with me...but I just never ended up following through with it and the whole aspie thing just kinda faded away.
He's since retired and now that he's gone, I really regret not going and talking with him a bit.

...
Anyhow lol you guys rock! I love that there's so many comments on this thread! :)

Have been tempted by this game in the past but I know I would get way too into it!!! As it is I made my boyfriend play our new board game (Dominion) with me 4 times yesterday lol! Ack

Oi! Dominion I've played. I love it and we own so many of the expansions. I have so much fun trying to optimize a strategy from a randomly selected card base.

I love that you can randomly select cards!!! It makes the game different every time you play! We just have the basic original set, but it's been fun mixing in new cards. Oh, my boyfriend made a really fun mix last night, it was such a close game both times we played it.

The only thing with Dominion is you don't HAVE to pick cards that make you interact with the other player, so it can be a little bit of, you're both playing your own game until the end when it gets down to the wire. It would be even better with more interaction. (Boyfriend hates the Thief and Curse cards and stuff)

I'm definitely restraining myself from going straight to the local game store and getting an expansion!!! Moneymoney **Wince**

Though boyfriend's bday is in May...

Anyways, sorry, I didn't mean to highjack this thread. I thought of Dominion because in a way it's similar to Magic, where you're trying to build your deck to make things ideal for you.

Just played my first paper booster draft yesterday (khans-fate-fate) (have drafted a bit on mtgo though).
Was a lot of fun! And man...NO ONE was taking any green! I kept getting passed everything I needed for a great green base! Also...someone passed me a bombshell rare very early on in the draft. Atarka (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391796)...and the cool thing about it, is I was being passed so many great green cards, that I knew I'd consistently be able to hit the 7 mana needed to play this guy.

My deck ended up being green/red...and it was pretty sick. It was all about putting a creature or 2 in play, and then beefing the creature up with pump spells and +1/+1 counters. Than in the late game, I'd drop a dragon for the win.

Temur Sabertooth (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391942)
Sultai Flayer (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386677)
Goblin Heelcutter (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391845) (AMAZING card for me yesterday! Paying his dash cost and attacking in with him and a beefed up creature...while making my opponent's best blocker not able to actually block...was just awesome!)
Rageform (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391899)
Lightening Shrieker (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391868)
Destructor Dragon (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391818)
Atarka, World Render (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391796)

These were all my beatsticks. I also had some smaller critters to help such as a pair of Whisperer Of The Wilds (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391957), Smoldering Efreet (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391925), Abzan Beastmaster (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391782) (GREAT card in sealed!!) and Frontier Mastadon (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391839) (4/3 for 3 mana? YES PLEASE!).

Then I had a bunch of pump spells...Map The Wastes (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391871) (Pump + Mana accel/fixing = WINNING!), Ruthless Instincts (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391909), Awaken The Bear (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386484), Dragonscale Boon, (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386525) and Become Immense (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386487) (lol, omg, this card was stupid fun to play!)

And since I knew I was playing such big fatties, I had a few 'fight' cards as a form of creature removal. The fact that they also pumped my creatures was just icing on the already delicious cake! Savage Punch (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386652) (lol gotta love that art!!) and a couple of Hunt The Weaks (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391858).

And finally I had a couple of Bathe In Dragonfire (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=391799) to finish things off.

I was just VERY lucky at the draft yesterday...I was given such an amazing pool of cards to work with.
The fact I was just 2 colors...instead of attempting to be 3...also put me at a huge advantage compared to anyone trying to play a 3 colored deck yesterday.

And...my deck smashed face! :D It was so much fun! It played out just about the same way each game...I'd start out with a small creature early on, and then I'd start pumping my creature and keeping my opponent under pressure...I could just feel the momentum building...late game as my opponents were still struggling to keep up with my big fat creatures I had been pumping throughout the game...I'd than drop a dragon...I'd usually win on my next turn.

There was only 3 rounds...I was hoping for 4 :(. I ended up playing 7 games...and won 6 of them...taking 1st place :D.

I hope to do more drafts in the future. haha I'm SO gonna get smashed on my next draft...Oh how I wished every draft could give me such a great pool of cards to work with!

I'm going to post my deck list I played yesterday...cause...1.) I'm bored. 2.) I'm a dork. 3.) I'm planning on keeping all the decks I build for sealed events intact (kinda like collecting souvenirs)...4.) Cause I like to brag :p.

haha I know no one seems to know wtf I'm talking about here...
But that's okay :p I'mma just kinda talk to myself! lols

So a couple of months ago they banned a card from being used in tournaments. It was just too strong of a card.
Unfortunately for me...that card was the cement that held a deck I had invested a lot of time, money and energy into.
...So I needed to start working on a new deck.

One of the problems I have...is I'm on such a tight budget right now...I can't just pick up a new deck from scratch.
So I needed to sell off the cards in my old deck.
Only...I didn't want to take a huge loss on the cards. I went into debt putting that deck together...some of the individual cards were quite pricey! 4 of them costed me $30 each...2 of them cost me $65 each...and then I had lots and lots and lots of cards that were between $10-$20 each stuffed in the deck.
It really was a dream deck for me.

I've been selling things on ebay (including cards from various games I've played over the years) for something like 10 or more years now...
Though I've really started to back off of ebay over the past 5 years, because dang...with all the fees I pay with ebay (and paypal)...I take a HUGE loss on my profits when I sell single cards there.

So I went and talked to the guy who runs a local gaming shop...he's interested in my cards, but will only give me a fraction of what the cards are worth.
I get that...he runs a shop. He's all about turning a profit.

I asked a bunch of people who play regularly at the shop...and no one's really interested in the cards (for prices/trades I'm willing to make).

It was looking pretty ugly for me. I had a really bad feeling that I was either going to be stuck with the deck that I could no longer use...or I was going to take a gigantic loss on the deck through selling it for far less then the cards were worth.

.......
And then I heard about a website called PucaTrade.com

I don't even remember where I heard about the site first. I think I just saw it casually mentioned somewhere on some mtg forums.

But then a couple of big name youtubers (big name in the MTG community at any rate) produced a couple of videos on PucaTrade.com...and they were absolutely gushing about how great the site was!

So I decided to give it a look.

...In a nutshell what PucaTrades does, is it lets you make a list of any/all the cards you own that you'd like to trade or sell to others.
Once you've listed your cards, you can then search for people who are looking for the specific cards you want to get rid of.
Once you find someone, you commit to send that person the cards...and then once that person receives the card you send them, they log onto Puca and click a button signifying that they have indeed received the card you committed to send.
You are then awarded points equal to the value of the card you shipped. They constantly update the card values so that they're always current.
100 Puca points = $1.

Once you've got enough Puca points in your account, you can then make a list of cards you'd like to buy from other people...then people who have those cards can commit to send them to you...which deducts the value of that card out of your Puca points.

I don't think I'm doing a very good job of explaining it lols.

But here's the real kicker...the thing that blows my mind.

This service is FREE. There are NO fees at all to sell or trade your cards through this website. No listing fees, no monthly charges (though you can upgrade to a premium account which gives you some extra tools...though it's completely unnecessary to have a premium account)...no nothing.
The only thing you pay for is shipping.

This blows my mind!
I've been selling cards on ebay for years...paying WAY too much on fees.

I was very skeptical of the site for a good month. I had created an account, but left it at that. My biggest fear is that I'd ship one of my valuable cards, but then the person who receives it lying and saying I never shipped it.
Of course this is always a possibility on ebay as well...and in the many years of selling on ebay, I've never once had this happen to me.

But then I found out that PucaTrades guarantees every transaction. If this does happen, they give you points equal to the card you shipped out.
I also read tons of reviews and user experiences with the site...and after reading many, many experiences...I discovered that this is almost a non-existent issue at PucaTrade.

...So...I pulled the trigger!
I listed up most of my old deck and started to search for people looking for my cards.

This website has completely revolutionized the way I look at this game! It's changed everything for me!

In the past I've always taken huge losses on cards I buy and then later sell. I'm just too damn impatient, and when I get out of the game, or want to switch over to a new deck or something...I've always gone about it in really stupid ways and sold or traded my cards off for less then they were worth.

Puca changes that.
The 2 cards I spent $65 each on (Noble Hierarch (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=179434)) for example.
I do not regret paying what I paid for these 2 cards. They were the perfect card for my deck at the time.
However...there's a new reprint set coming out in may, and it's widely expected that this card will be reprinted in the set which will drop the value of the card.
So...it's going to be difficult to find anyone who's willing to pay anything near $60+ on the card right now.
No one around here is willing to pay more then $35 each on the cards. Taking a $30 loss on the cards is hard to swallow.

Enter PucaTrades!
I've been able to trade away both of the 2 cards each for about 6,400 Puca Points ($64). $2 loss on the cards? That's freaking amazing!

Then the 4 cards I payed $30 each on (Verdant Catacombs (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=193400)). I've sold each for about 3,300 Puca Points ($33). These too are expected to be reprinted within the next year...so they too will drop in value. Not only was I able to sell them without taking much of a loss...but I actually made a $10 profit on them (after shipping fees)!

I have since shipped out several dozen envelopes...54 cards in total...all over the world! Germany, UK, all over the US, Australia and Canada. In total I've shipped out just shy of $600 worth of cards.
It's been an absolute blast for me! I live for this kind of thing!
It gives me something to really hyper focus on haha.

And...after all the shipping fees I've paid...I've actually made a profit on the cards I've sold! I can't believe that!
I've never made a profit on selling cards in large quantities before. I'm a very sucky business man! lol

This site has just completely changed this game for me.
It's given me an outlet to sell/trade off my cards without having to suffer a big loss in profit.
It still feels too good to be true...and yet it's not!

And with my Puca Points (58,800 of them and counting!) I've been able to get myself all sorts of fun stuff! The first thing I started to trade for, was finishing up my playset (4x) of Khan's Fetchlands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&text=+[pay]+[1]+[life,]+[sacrifice]+[search]&set=+[%22Khans%20of%20Tarkir%22]). It's been a dream of mine to own a full playset of all 10 of the fetchlands at some point. That's 40 cards. Well...I've now got half of them! And as soon as they reprint the other half (probably in a new set coming out in october), I'll be able to make this dream a reality!

I've also pieced together a couple of new decks. A new modern deck (I'm going to make a separate post on that deck here in a few minutes down below)...and a pauper deck (pauper=all commons).
All this...and I've still got over $200 points left over to use as I need! I'm thinking about paying for a playset of the ally colored shocklands to go along with my fetches...this sure would make deck building a heck of a lot easier for me at any time in my future.
Or I may build another deck or 2...or heck, maybe I'll just hold on to the points so I have them for the future.

.......
Anyhow...I'm so freaking happy with this site! I'm so glad I took the plunge and went for it! I was able to sell off my deck I'm no longer able to use...and actually turn a small profit on it! :D
I've also been able to sell a bunch of other cards in my collection that have just been collecting dust in boxes.

PucaTrades has completely changed the way I think about selling and trading my cards.

I guess the biggest downside to Puca, is that I'm not actually making cash on my cards. I'm making PucaPoints. These points can only be used on this website, and can only be used on MTG cards.
This isn't a big deal to me right at this moment, as I'm not looking to sell my cards for anything other then more cards anyhow.

...And there's my blog entry for the day!
:p

Okay so I had a Black/Green Birthing Pod (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=birthing+pod) deck built (see the first post in this thread).
I LOVED this deck! Absolutely the funnest deck I've ever played in this game.
...well...
They banned Pod from being played in tournaments in January. /cry :(...lol My stomach just completely dropped when I had heard the announcement.

It's taken me a couple of months to come up with a new deck to play.
I know I want something that's got control. I love control.
Counterspell (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393825) is one of my all time favorite cards in this game (come on Wizards...give it to us in Modern already! :( ).
I also love long grindy games. Games that take a ton of processing and thinking and forethought. Games where you just have to pause for a couple of minutes looking very intently at the cards in your hand, and the cards on the table and figure out exactly what you need to do to survive.
I thrive for these moments. It's one of the things that made my Pod deck so amazing to play. It was an AMAZING deck at grinding.

Well...I found just the deck!
After a lot of research...and watching a bazzilion or so youtube videos of the deck in action...I found just the deck I'm looking for!
In fact...it might even be funner to run then my Pod deck!! It's like it's custom made for everything I love in magic decks!
It's got control, It's all about grinding it's way through a game, it's got some awesome combos, it runs countermagic...and...

It runs a card that litterally says:

"You can't lose the game and your opponents can't win the game."

lols :giggle:...for reals (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=206329)!

It's a Mono Blue Tron (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&name=+&type=+[land]&set=|[%22Antiquities%22]) deck. It utilizes various counterspells early/mid game, to grind through to the late game where you're striving to piece together your Urzatron (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&name=+&type=+[land]&set=|[%22Antiquities%22]) lands. Once you've got the mana, you're looking to finish out the game with either some big critters (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=true&multiverseid=220533), or...and this is just silly awesome...creating a Mindslaver (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=209044) lock. In order to pull this off, you've got to be able to produce 12 mana each turn, have a mindslaver, and have a Academy Ruins (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=370424) in play.
You play your mindslaver and pay to activate it's ability (this costs a total of 10 mana).
You then get to play your opponent's next turn for them! lol...You take control of all their cards, get to see and play all their cards in hand (as well as anything face down or exiled or even their sideboards) and you make all decisions for them.
Fun stuff! lol...
Then at the end of their turn you took for them (or...during your upkeep), you to activate your Academy to put your mindslaver from your graveyard, back on top of your library, where you'll draw back into it...and then can repeat this whole process again. Turn after turn. Completely locking them out of the game (and you of course make sure to tap all their lands so they're not able to play instants on your turn).
This just seems stupid fun to me! lol

Of course...very, very few decks can support this combo. 12 mana is very difficult to hit in most competitive formats (outside of multiplayer formats).
But this deck is able to get there off the back of the urza lands, countermagic/bounce to buy time, and card advantage.

I am a couple of cards short from this list below...though I think I'll have it fully put together by next weekend.
I can't wait to run this deck though.
It's not the best deck in the format (modern)...but it can be dam good. Especially once you've played the deck long enough to really get a feel for how to properly play it.

I'm also running a VERY suboptimal card in my deck. This deck should be running 4x Remands (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=380255). This is the perfect counterspell for this deck. It delays, and it replaces itself. This deck doesn't need to hard counter everything...it just needs to delay things just long enough for us to reach enough mana to start throwing out our game finishing threats and combos.
But...Remand is selling for $15+ each. For an uncommon. I'm just not willing to pay $60 on 4 uncommons right now :(. Just not happening.
So in it's place, I'm going to try playing 4 Delays (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=132228) instead. The huge problem with delay of course is the fact that it doesn't replace itself (draw a card). It's a HUGE draw back compared to remands. But 4 delays costed me $2. So yeah :(...until I can find Remands at a decent price/trade...I'm stuck playing a sub-par card in it's place.

...anyhow...here's my list!:

I've also made quite a few changes to my Commander deck (post #2 (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1713199&postcount=2) of this thread).

I've added in more graveyard hate (and have even more in my sideboard)...as I've been playing a guy who runs a sick Karador (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=236468) reanimator deck a lot.

I've also added in several other just general "good stuff" cards.
Serra Ascendant (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=204989)
Eight-And-A-Half-Tails (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=50296)
Ranger Of Eos (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=174823)
Wurmcoil Engine (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=389756)
Mind's Eye (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=338452)
Crucible Of Worlds (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=129480)
Catastrophe (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=21143)
Flooded Strand (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386537)
Windswept Heath (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386725)
Flagstones Of Trokair (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=116733)
Dust Bowl (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=19772)

And...My new favoritest card in my deck!:

Humility (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=4881)

Omg this card is BONKERS fun to play! haha...I love everything about it! This format is all about playing some of the biggest, baddest, most over the top creatures in this game...creatures with huge power and toughness, insane comes into play/leaves the battlefield effects, and crazy powerful triggered and activated abilities.
This card shuts it all down and turns those big mean fighting monstrosities into little dinky do nothing dorks haha.
My deck sure does play a lot a a-hole cards .

Anyhow, here's my updated list! I'm only missing 1 card from it at this point (a Catastrophe (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=21143)).
...this deck is my baby and has recently won me my first commander tournament (armageddon (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=true&multiverseid=14500) and cataclysm (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=true&multiverseid=6050) are just nasty, NASTY cards. Played at the right moment and they flat out win you the game)! <3

And here's my Pauper (all common) deck list...

My local game shop is planning on hosting some pauper tournaments here shortly...I guess there's lots of people interested around here.

Pauper is cool because you can only use common cards. No rares, no uncommons, no mythics.
It looks like a super fun format...and decks are nice and cheap :).

The deck I'm planning on running is net decked (meaning I'm building a deck from a list I found online)...though it is slightly tweaked, so I have at least had some hand in this build.
I'm not sure it's where I want it at yet...so it very well might change here shortly. In particular I'm not sure I like the 2x Merfolk Looters (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=merfolk+looter) I'm running.

...But...I'm a brewer. I love testing cards out and tweaking my decks till I've got them just where I want them. It can take me months of tweaking to find a list I'm satisfied with. I'll make simple changes over the course of those months too...swapping out just a couple cards at a time.

It's just another part of this game that brings me tremendous amounts of satisfaction :D.

This deck looks amazing. It's a VERY control heavy deck full of counterspells and bounce. I couldn't hardly ask for more!
It can also hold it's own against anything in the format as far as I'm aware. Especially once I've built a sideboard (kinda waiting to see what other people are planning on running here local before I start working on a sideboard).

So anyhow...here's my list...I've got most the cards, just waiting on a few more to come through the mail:

MONO BLUE DELVER (60):

CREATURES (18):
4x Delver of Secrets (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=226749)
4x Spellstutter Sprite (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=370380)
4x Cloud of Faeries (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=382893)
2x Merfolk Looter (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=220179)
2x Ninja of the Deep Hours (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=271184)
2x Spire Golem (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393872)

COUNTERSPELLS (10):
4x Counterspell (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=393825)
4x Deprive (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=193519)
2x Mana Leak (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386345)

BOUNCE (4):
4x Snap (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=12374)

DRAW (11):
4x Brainstorm (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=382224)
3x Thought Scour (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=380203)
2x Ponder (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=244313)
2x Treasure Cruise (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=386705)

LAND (17):
17x Island (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=143624)

I've never ran a deck with so few lands...but it doesn't really ever need more then 2 islands to function well. I've even seen some lists dip to as low as 15x islands (I'm not that brave!)

I used to play Magic: The Gathering, and I still have a considerable selection of cards from years and years ago (I forget which sets).

I am pondering organizing my collection and seeing what might be worth selling.

I would highly recommend doing so! There's quite a lot of older cards that for a long time weren't worth much of anything...but over the last 5 or so years have jumped in price considerably (thanks in large part to a new'ish format that has caught a lot of popularity called commander).

If you do go through them and find some hidden jems...I'd LOVE to hear what some of those are!

My friend bought a box of old cards at a garage sale a couple years ago for $25...he found a couple $80 cards, and a bunch of other cards valued anywhere from $5 to $30 in that box!
It's SO my dream to do the same! lol...to find an old box of cards with some value inside.

I also have a nice selection of Vampire: The Eternal Struggle. I suspect that one's popularity is not as enduring.

Okay so you can play this card game online as well. There's different ways to go about it, some of which are free...
But the most popular way to play is through the official program created and ran by the guys who actually make the card game.
The catch is...is it costs real world money.
For a pack of physical real cards (a pack of 15 random cards)...it retails for $3.99. Well the online version has the same pricing structure. A pack of random digital cards also costs $3.99.

So it can be quite pricey.
But...there's SO many benefits to the online client. It's a very clean and polished interface, it's constantly being updated and maintained, and it's just a very pleasurable experience. Most of the free ways to play online are rather complicated to set up and get going initially, and none of the programs are any where near as user friendly or polished as the official program.

So anyhow...thanks to a site called pucatrade I've been able to piece together a (real physical) modern deck. Mono Blue Tron.
I've watched dozens of games of the deck playing out on youtube over the past few weeks, and the deck just continues to excite the hell out of me.

Well I was bored today...so I decided to see how much my physical tron deck would cost me to piece it together for the online client. I expected it to cost well over $100 which I just don't have right now.

...with just a couple of simple tweaks to my deck (took out 1 batterskull, and 1 fabricate, and added in 1 spell burst and an additional island (think I like this deck better at 24 lands))...and with the cards I already had in my online collection...I was able to piece this deck together for just $49! So I jumped all over it and made the purchase for the online version of the deck.

This is good, and this is bad.
It's good...cause now I can play it online anytime of the day or night. I'll be able to get dozens upon dozens of games in with this deck now...which will eventually get me to a point where I know the deck inside and out and will be able to play it almost roboticly. I love getting to that point with a deck...where everything just becomes automatic. Where very few situations can catch you off guard, because you've spent many hours practicing and being in these situations, and you know you deck well enough to know just what you need to do to get through the situations.
So I'm looking forward to grinding online with this deck now.
This is all great, because I'll be well prepared with my deck when I end up taking it to local tournaments. Not only will I know my own deck inside and out, but I'll also be able to get tons of games in vs. a lot of the most popular decks out there, so I'll know how to play against those decks as well.

It's a bad thing...
Cause.../sigh...I'm already addicted to my damned computer as it is haha. Now even more so!
I haven't played much magic online in about a year...but now that obsession will be starting up again.

...anyhow...
I played 10 games this afternoon online. And omg...this deck is ridiculous!
haha after my first 3 games I was shaking a tiny bit...this deck felt so overly powerful. My very first game I was able to produce 8 mana by turn 3, putting out a wurmcoil engine and riding that to an easy victory with counter backup to protect the wurmcoil.

I was nervous for some reason though lol.
But by the last few games, I was already starting to pick up on the deck. There's actually quite a lot to it...though at the same time, it's also a fairly simple deck to play (compared to some other decks I've ran in my past).
This deck can be super fast, bringing out big giant threats early/mid game...but a lot of the time this deck runs much slower. Slowly building up mana while countering anything relevant your opponent attempts to play, and drawing cards.

I got to do my mindslaver lock (mindslaver + academy ruins +12 mana available each turn = your opponent never gets to play their own turns again lol).
It was pretty glorious one game. My opponent had 2 creatures in play that had hexproof...and he just so happened to also have 2 dismembers in hand haha. I can't tell you how fun it was to cast his 2 dismembers, costing him 8 life...AND killing both of his hex proof creatures.
On my following turn...knowing he had nothing left in his hand, I cast a platinum angel with some counters and plenty of open mana up. Man was that a cool game. :P

I had another game where I was able to put out a platinum angel...I had something like 20 mana available to me including the ability to produce 4 or 5 blue. And I had a spell burst. The guy tried to empty his hand killing my angel...but I was able to burst everything he played. It was just silly having that amount of mana open. haha

All in all...I played 10 games, and won 9 of them. This deck is just nuts. It's capable of over the top plays, and has some ridiculously stupid cards haha.
I've been a long time fan of Platinum Angel as a casual card. I'm thrilled she's finally found a place in an actual competitive modern deck....also, mindslaver is just disgustingly fun to play haha. Who doesn't want to take your opponent's turns for them? :P

.......
So if you guys don't see or hear from me for the next several months...it's probably because I'm grinding out game after game online with this deck.
It's just how I work. lol I'll play the same decks over and over for hours at a time online. Sounds boring...but I find it thrilling. I love mastering decks!

.......
I also wonder what it is with my obsession with magic (or any of the other hobbies I've ever been into). It gets to very unhealthy levels and becomes a HUGE portion of my life. I just completely obsess over them and it's all I ever really want to do.
This can last from just a couple of weeks...all the way to years in some cases.
Is this an ADHD thing?
Is this possibly an asperger's thing? I've often wondered if I don't have a bit of autism in me.
I might make a new thread on this sometime.

...

lol I've totally made this thread into a place where I can just let out all my pent up excitement about this game...even though no one here plays haha.

I do enjoy having this thread to get it all out though! lol :P I needed to get all my long winded pent up thoughts out here...so I don't drive my parents insane talking to them about all this stuff! haha...my mom pretty much IMMEDIATELY checks out anymore once I start talking about this game >.<;.

I'm not difficult to wreck to be honest. I'm really not that good of a player...there's TONS of things I still get confuzored about with this game (really small specific gameplay situations) and I also tend to play too fast for my own good at times (mainly out of nervousness I think)...instead of taking things slowly and thinking everything thoroughly through.
I'm also quite prone to making big stupid misplays yet as well haha.

I do consider myself an above average player skill wise...but at the same time, I'm fully aware that I'm no where near where I'd like to be. I'm only really a mediocre player when it all comes down to it.

Also...I LOVE playing people that can crush me. It sounds dumb...but it's true.
lol I still get all excited when I get to play a couple of the guys around here that are extremely good at this game. It gives me a natural high sometimes. I just absolutely crave that challenge!

It's also one of the best ways to get better at this game. To play people who are better then you.

hehe I'd love to play your brother :D. I wouldn't be surprised in any way if he kicked by butt haha. Especially if he's playing a fast deck...my current deck is much better at playing against slower decks (which tons of people locally play).

...
There's also an app for this game on ipads and other tablets that I've played.
The thing I don't like about the xbox or tablet versions of the game...is they don't give you access to all the cards, and you can't fully customize your own decks because of it. It's all very limited and restrictive. You can tweak the decks in the games...but only with a small, limited, set of cards.
It'd be amazing if you could build your own decks from scratch on the xbox/tablet apps and play them!

I bet you, he has multiple decks that he plays with for different situations :P

I cant play card games, never could, don't think i will. Something about em, I don't even understand poker.
Last year my oldest brother tried getting us all to play Dungeons and dragons, not only was it 10 years before my turn each time, but I just did NOT get it at all. Even monopoly I don't get really, I haven't played in a while but when I was a kid I think I made up my own rules.

They have tried to get me into magic but again i don't understand the game :p I will ask him if I can remember when he is home what decks he has haha

Also, it's just like anything really. Everyone's got their own interests. lol for some this game is tediously mind numbingly boring...for others, it provides an almost infinite amount of excitement and thrills :).

Played another 13 games with my mono blue tron deck online this morning.
Before I brag, I should point out that I've only been playing in the casual portion of the online game up till my last few games. I want to start out here until I start to get the hang of the deck and can pilot it a bit better.
I have been making it clear to my opponents that I'm packing a tron deck before each game though.

Anyhow, I played 10 games in the casual zone...won all 10 of the games. Some pretty fun shinangans took place, including a game where my opponent had 1 watery grave, 1 steam vents, 1 breeding pool and 2 overgrown tombs out. I dropped a sundering titan on and was able to destroy 4 of the 5 lands he had. His next turn he killed my titan (with a liliana of the veil)...and I was able to destroy his last (overgrown tomb) in play. :P
He was able to ultimate his veil a few turns later, but I had so much mana (to his 2 lands he had at that point) with an academy ruins, that it was only inevitable.

So after playing those 10 games and winning them all...I decided to go try my deck out in the tournament practice section of the online client. Here's where the real competition exists. This is where I'll start running into top tier decks.

The guy I was playing with was playing a green/white deck. I've not actually seen this deck before...but it was a pretty neat deck! It ran tons of mana accel (in the form of birds of paradise and wall of roots mainly), a bit of draw and just a bunch of cool creatures with comes into play effects (eternal witnesses, wall of omens, reclamation sage...etc.).
Then he used restoration angels to really get full use out of his creatures.

That coupled with some creature removal...and it was a nice deck.

Anyhow, game 1 was pretty uneventful. A turn 4 sundering titan destroying most of his land base pushed him into conceding and heading to game 2.

Game 2 was a lot of fun...and he had me on the ropes just about the entire game. I was never close to being able to hit the 3 urza lands I needed...and it didn't help that he had a tectonic edge in play.
I really didn't do much that game but sit back and twiddle my thumbs haha. I had no counterspells in hand either.

Then he completely surprised me on his final turn. He cast a chord of calling for 5...and I wasn't sure exactly what he was going to pull out.
Well...it ended up being kiki-jiki! haha, did NOT see that coming! Not from a straight green/white deck!
He had a restoration angel in play, so I conceded the game to head to game 3 (of the best of 3 match).

This game went long!
And I made some major mistakes during this game. I truly have a long ways to go before I really master this deck.

It pretty much came down to me taking quite a bit of time to piece together my urza lands...but I did have quite a bit of card draw and countermagic, so I was more then okay letting the game turn into a long grindy game. I do well in grindy games.

I was able to counter some very key plays of his...including 2 restoration angels.
But then I made huge misplay.
I cast a thirst for knowledge drawing 3 cards...I ended up drawing a urza land (which at that point I no longer needed), a mindslaver and an academy ruins. I was dumb, and really nervous my opponent was holding some crazy in his hand...so I chose to discard the 2 lands and play my mindslaver to take his next turn for him.
In retrospect I should've discarded the mindslaver keeping and playing my academy ruins...then bringing my slaver back to the top of my deck to be drawn on my next turn. I would've had the lock (had something like 20 mana available to me at that point in the game) and would've been able to win the game right then and there.
Pretty big misplay on my part.

Instead, the game drug out for a very long time haha. It came down to top decking...we each had no cards in hand.
He top decked into a restoration angel...which made it very scary for me, cause all he'd need at that point was to top deck his kiki-jiki, or a chord of calling to fetch the kiki out of his deck and he'd have the game.

But then a turn or 2 later I top decked into a treasure mage which I was able to use to go get a platinum angel.
I also had a counterspell in hand at that point (and I think 24 mana from lands/talismans available to me at that point).

Couple turns later...he draws into his kiki-jiki which he plays...I had a counterspell waiting for him though (a delay). At the end of his turn I cyclonic rifted everything he had in play back to his hand (well, besides his lands).
His following turn he was able to draw a ton of cards and kill my platinum angel. Luckly I had plenty of life yet and was in no immediate threat of dieing outside of his kiki combo.

Then on my turn I drew an expedition map...which I was able to use to go and fetch my last academy ruins.
I passed my turn, my opponent drew his card...and then he conceded. He'd be unable to kill me that turn and I'd be able to use my academy ruin to take my mindslaver from my graveyard and put it back on top of my library so that I'd draw it my following turn. I'd then be able to repeat this every round...so that my opponent would never have a chance control any of his future turns. Locking him out of the game.

It was such an epic game though!
lol we were both playing insane decks capable of insane plays and both packing instant win combos (well not technically instant...but you know what I mean).

It really took a lot of concentration. Tons of math and keeping track of things as well.

...
This deck is doing exactly has I hoped it'd do for me...and that's that it'd just be a fun, yet competitive deck for me to play in the modern format. The last deck I was running (green/black birthing pod) was the funnest deck I've ever played in this game...I was heart broken when they banned the key card in the deck, rending the deck unplayable at a highly competitive level.
Well this mono blue tron deck is just incredible! It very well may end up being my new favorite deck I've ever ran. It does everything I want a deck to do really. This deck fits me like a well worn glove and I'm loving it!

So far I've got 23 games with this deck under my belt. I've won 21 of those games, so I'm 21-2.
I think I'm going to strictly start playing in the tournament practice section of the online client from here on out...though I don't have a sideboard built online yet, so I'm at a huge disadvantage. But my win percentage will start to shoot down as I play other highly competitive decks piloted by skilled players. This is where I'll start learning how to play this deck.
Eventually I'll probably start playing this deck online for some money (you can play online where you take on a random opponent in a best of 3 match. It costs $2 to play for each player...and who ever wins gets 1 booster pack (with a value of $4). The loser of the match is out his $2).

@TygerSan

That article is really interesting to me. Back in 1994-1995 I was on WotC's Magic mailing list, and there was a lot of discussion about how the Legends expansion had an extremely limited run, and how the next expansion - I think Ice Age - should have a larger run so people would have a better chance to get the rare cards. Ice Age did get a larger run, to the point that I think some people thought it was too large, but I think it kept a lot of people involved over a longer period of time because the bar to get good cards wasn't so high. The supply was greater thus meaning more chances to get the good rare cards plus the demand was still much the same, meaning lower prices for selling the rare cards.

Like, I think I was at least witness to the public side of the discussions described in the article. Cool.

I have a dream of owning a playset (4x) of each fetchland, and each shockland.

...over the last few months I've made huge strides in making that dream come true. I've been buying other people's collections and trading what I get for these lands.
So far I have a complete playset of all the ally fetchlands and shocklands, and I'm only 5 enemy shocklands away from completing a playset of them as well! :D

It's been a hell of a lot of fun collecting these and I'm dang proud of them!
I'm waiting for a reprint of the enemy shocklands before I start working on those.

Here's what I have so far :D

FETCHLANDS:

4x Breeding Pool (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=366291)

Dang I'm proud of my ever growing collection!
I've also tweaked the heck out of my Mono Blue Tron deck and have it just about where I like it. I have the same deck card for card on mtgo so I've been grinding it out against all the top decks trying to learn it inside and out.

Oh...and I also played a modern masters 2 draft when mm2 came out late last month...I didn't do so well (won 2 rounds, lost 2 rounds) but I did pull a Bitterblossom and a Ulamog out of the 3 packs I opened! It was pretty awesome (though not as awesome as the guy who opened a goyf and a foily Leyline Of Sanctity out of a pack he'd won. haha I was SO happy for him! What a freaking pack! xP

Anyhow...I freaking love this game. I can't soak up enough of it.

Just shipped out 18 more cards on Pucatrade.com today...will recieve a bit over $100 for them.
I've now shipped out over 200 cards with a value of about $1,200 and have received over 800 with a value of around $1,250 through puca in the last 8 or so months. I can't believe how much puca has transformed the way I'm able to enjoy this game (by allowing me to trade so easily and cheaply with people around the world).

I'm just 5 lands away from having a playset of the new Battle For Zendikar dual lands. I'm not super excited about this dual land cycle, but I seem to be more excited about them than most are.
They are MUCH weaker than shock lands...sure...but honestly, I'm just thrilled I've got new toys to play with, with my fetchlands. Wizards could print something like:

Tap Underground Sea
Land -- Island Swamp
(T: Add U or B to your mana pool.)
Tap Underground Sea comes into play tapped.

And I would've been excited. The fact that these BFZ duals have a chance to come into play untapped is just awesome.

Anyhow, the only 5 I need now are 4x Smoldering Marsh and 1 more Canopy Vista.

I'm also going to use my puca points to pick up the remaining 3x Lumbering Falls and 3x Shambling Vents that I need.

So I'm excited :D I love collecting lands. For whatever reason, they're my favorite cards to collect in this game.

.......

I've also been loving Battle For Zendikar.
When the full spoiler went up several weeks ago...I was very disapointed. Outside of the lands...there just wasn't anything there for me. I'm a modern and commander player with very little interest in standard...and BFZ just has so little for me to get excited about for modern or commander.

But I went to the midnight pre-release just for the funs...and man, I had a blast opening the packs!
The tiny chance to open an expedition, and the full art basic in every pack...just made opening the packs fun. With my winnings from the tournament I was able to open 10 packs that night...and I was hooked! lol

Plus it turned out to be a hell of a fun limited set.
So I went back to draft it on release day last friday and also picked up a box. haha I was so addicted, that I went back yet again on saturday to buy yet another box of it and to draft yet again.

My first box was awesome...I pulled all sorts of nice things (no expeditions). The rares and mythics from the box had a value of well over $150 (paid $115 for the box at my local gaming shop that holds all the tournaments).
The other box was a MAJOR stinker though. The only thing of note I pulled from it was an Ulamog. In total it's value was less than $60. lol I'm kinda sad about it...worst box I've ever opened...but than again, I had a lot of fun and it is a gamble. You win some, you lose some.

...
But friday and saturday's drafts were amazing! I LOVE drafting this set! There's just so freaking many different decks you can build within this set. Aggro, control, landfall, allies, awaken, devoid, life gain, flyers...I mean...there's just so many options!! It's freaking awesome, and they can all work if you pull the right cards.

In Friday's draft, my first pack had a Guardian Of Tazeem in it. Bomb AND reusable pseudo removal on a 4/4 flying beat stick...for 5 cmc??? YES PLEASE!
And then I just continued to get passed tons of awesome blue and white flyers! I couldn't hardly believe it lol.
I ended up drafting a blue/white flyers deck...had 12 flyers in it with a perfect curve. I had flyers at 1cmc through 7cmc (Emeria Shepherd) but mainly at 2 and 3cmc. Add in a handful of removal spells, and my deck freaking rocked.
I ended up winning all 3 rounds of that tournament. Each round consists of best of 3 games vs. your opponent...and in rounds 1 and 2 I went undefeated. But then round 3 came and I was pitted against a girl who was also undefeated that night...and she stomped the heck out of me game 1. She curved out perfectly...turn after turn. It was pretty sick and the game was over very quickly.
But I made a comeback! Took her down games 2 and 3 for the win :D.

The next night's draft was equally as fun.
My first pack had a Dust Stalker in it. But...it also had a foil full art swamp in it as well. /sigh...lol, I SOOOOOOOO wanted that freaking swamp! I was SO tempted to just take it. But dang it...I took the Dust Stalker.
And in the end I'm so glad I did! I was being passed everything I needed for a kick a** devoid deck! 2x Forerunner Of Slaughter, 2x Nettle Drone, 2x Kozilek's Sentinals and a couple of Swarm Surges...and my deck was awesome! Add in a bunch of burn (2x Outnumber, 2x Stonefury and even a Rolling Thunder) and it was great!
By far the MVP of the deck was Swarm Surge, followed very closely by Nettle Drone. Surge was a beast though! Giving my army of critters +2 attack AND first strike was just nuts!

I won that tournament too :D. I thought for sure I was going to lose in the final round though. I was playing a guy who had gone undefeated that night...and in game 1, I found out why. He was playing blue/white awaken fliers and it was pretty bonkers haha. He just completely dominated me the entire game in game 1. It didn't help that I drew into 4 or 5 lands in the mid-late game (grrrr!).
The next 2 games were insanely tense. I loved playing against the guy, cause he took the game so freaking serious and was deeply concentrating and just very serious. I love that! I'm the same lol.
I just barely squeezed out the victory in game 2. Nettle Drone did a TON of work for me that game.
Game 3 was crazy. We were both hitting everything we needed to hit and curving out perfectly early game. He had a slight advantage over though as he had a couple of flyers I couldn't block.
And then it was a back a forth kind of thing for us there for awhile...swinging and blocking.
On my final turn, I was down to 2 life, while he had 2 blockers and 9 life. He also had 3 flyers (tapped from attacking me on his last turn)...each of which were lethal on his next turn on their own.
But he had no cards in hand, and I top decked a removal spell to kill off one of his 2 blockers, and then I went to cast Swarm Surge, which was just barely enough to push through enough damage to take him out.
It was pretty intense.

I enjoyed deck so much that I decided to turn it into a budget standard deck (with all the rest of the cards I pulled from all the boosters I've opened).

Here's where it's at:

STD R/B BUDGET DEVOID (60):

CREATURES (24):
4x Sludge Crawler
4x Forerunner Of Slaughter
2x Kozilek's Sentinals
4x Nettle Drone
4x Dominator Drone
2x Vile Aggregate
4x Dust Stalker

ENCHANTMENTS (2):
2x Molten Nursery

SORCERIES (10):
4x Touch Of The Void
4x Swarm Surge
2x Transgress The Mind

LANDS (24):
4x Bloodstained Mire
1x Blighted Fen
1x Blighted Gorge
2x Looming Spire
10x Swamp
6x Mountain

...
Every spell in the deck is devoid lol. Is it super powerful? Heck no. But it looks fun as heck and I really think I should be able to hold my own with it...put up a good fight at my local FNM's.
Also, by removing the 4 bloodstained mires (maybe replace with +2x Evolving Wilds, +1x Blighted Fen and +1x Looming Spire), you can purchase this deck for less than $13 online.

...
So anyhow...yeah...lol the last couple of weeks have been a blur to me. I've been completely obsessed with mtg lately.

I just thought I'd break in here to ask: Does anyone else get this little tingle of excitment when they see Wizards of the Sword Coast or Black Isle in print? No... Only me?

As you were, people... Move along. :P

My boyfriend is just teaching me how to play MTG and my only thought was: why the heck hadn't I started sooner?!

It is so fun! I am still in a rookie though, learning the ropes. I am a little afraid playing with his decks, since some of the cards are worth SO much (he's been into MTG for years). We got a few little cheapie newbie decks so I don't have to worry quite so much, even if all the cards are protected in sleeves.
