I started this online communication thing back in the 80's when you had to dial into a Bulletin Board System and leave posts one at a time. And while you were on the system everyone else had to wait to get in!

I use to go to these quarterly get togethers/bbq's from some of the boards and they were quite intersting. I made a couple of short term friends but never anything long term. Then there was Yvonne....those were the days! If only I wasn't married at the time....<sigh> If I only knew then what I know now!

I think it gets weird for most people after making a mental picture of someone once they have gotten to know them through the forum and then seeing them for REAL. This doesn't necessarily mean there is anything negative about either of the two + people meeting. It's just different than previous perceptions.

I've actually fantasized about this very idea. A huge plan to buy up all the tickets on a cruise ship and sail around for 5 days with y'all. That could get expensive so I favor the idea of staying with Futz and Witsend in Nebraska. Whoever doesn't fit in their houses can camp on the lawn.

There's only one drawback to this...actually two....
1) quite a few of us have voiced our concerns and discomfort being around large groups of people, so instead of giving a supportive atmosphere for meeting each other, we will in essence be setting off panic attacks

and
2) no one would get a word in edgewise. We're ADD, the only reason anyone gets a chance to talk around here is because it's one post at a time.

But don't let me hold up the plans. I'll bring the chips and dip and my lorezepam...no problemo!

Actually, I've already thought about this. This is what I have come up with. About ten miles from my home is a large camping ground with real bathroom facilities and a lake. Its also within a 5 mile distance of a town with a hotel and real swimming pool.

what do you all think ?Digitl,

Do you imagine what this would entail?
One person would do the arranging, but another would have a better idea, and all would procrastinate on who had the better idea, and even when things are settled, it will still take so long because no one has as yet packed their things, no one will remember to get the flight tickets, and even if everyone did manage it, by the time they all got together they would all wonder why they there because they forgot where they are there and why they came, and all would need time out to get over the trip; not to mention intoducing each other would be a nightmare. Okay that's done.

I'm telling you the best way to go about it is to have it near a camp ground so those that like to camp can and those that don't like to camp can rent a hotel room.

You could organize a get together breakfast in the morning and a ADD seminar after.

Then you can go fishing, boating, jet skiing, rafting, swimming, tubing (My all time personal favorite).

Then have a bar-b-q in the evening with a social hour or a dance. I know there are a lot of camping grounds around here where you can rent an entire section for you own group.

We need all types.

I'm good at organizing and cooking but not good at speaking to crowds and even if I talk to you a mile a minute here it won't happen in real life the first day I'll need someone to take me around and make me feel comfortable.

Do you see what I mean though we need all kinds of people not just organizers.

05-06-05, 11:38 AM
i don't think we'd have to organize it all, just publicize the date of the next CHADD convention (or something of similar interest) and drum up ADDF members to commit to going. then all we'd have to do is get a block of rooms - like they do for weddings, and do the campground equivalent of a block of rooms. state campground don't always accept reservations, but private ones do i think???

any conferences scheduled during the summer would do nicely. or in a warm climate!

conference attendence is optional, of course.

We could get a group campsite - we'll check out how many more can join in on the group site. and make the nightly campfires not optional. everyone must attend those! :)

Seriously, though your going to want some form of entertainment at night what about allowing members to show off special talents? Mary has an excellant singing voice and so many other members are not only musically inclinded but some are real comedians, dancers, etc. I think it would be nice for the younger kids like my son to see that having ADD doesn't mean Diagnoses Disaster.

We could have awards..no wait that always feels crappy when you don't get one.

i'd say next summer. this summer is already booked. i'd love if we could do something within driving distance of wisconsin ... 8 would be ideal, 12 hours max. so, we can get as far south as st. louis in ~ 8 hours. cincinnati (not really wanting to go there necesarily, we have friends there so i know about how far it is ...) is about 8 or so... if we go west, we can get to fargo in about 8 hours (hmmm, fargo... well, it'd be cheap anyway -- and there's fun racing there in the summer)

some ideas to get us started... i don't know where everyone who is interested is or how far they are willing to travel. anyone have a good way to get that info. all in one spot???

I've never been to Nebraska or anywhere really . Oh, Louisana for a week. Dont remember much though.

I think meet a bunch of you would be fun. I could stand not getting a word in edgewise with you folks. Its my family that that bugs me. I think I could handle the feeling I get when I worry about meeting new people and what they think.

I would love to meet ya all.

i'd be all for travelling to Nebraska ... or iowa. i just mapped my location to the center of NE, and it's ~ 10 hours. very do-able for me.

if we want to go a little further east so that the east coast folks wouldn't have to travel as far i could go as far as ohio...

how do we pick a location???

the logistics get to be a nightmare! too many details, and too many people disappointed if it's the wrong weekend or wrong location .... hopefully someone with organizing as a strength can figure this all out.... ;)

just thinking about planning a wedding convinced me that my husbands plan to elope was a *great* idea!!! :D

keep us posted!

I dont think we can actually make a middle place to meet.
If i did that, i guess i would be before Nebraska, since i am about 30 some hours from there. But i would not mind the driving down there, and even pick up people along the way to go there. If some people needed it.

I think Nebraska is pretty much the middle of the US no??? I also think that some of us will have to make a little bit more compromises then other to meet everyone. I personaly i am all for it :D

Ok so now i will officially open a new thread about meeting. And we will actually start working on something.

Iowa would be closer to Canada than Nebraska, technically. Not that much to look at, per se, mostly cornfields! Anyway, uhh...not sure where to meet exactly, but I'm in...technically Iowa would be closer to Canada, close to Wisconsin (honeymooned there), close (well, relatively) to Ohio...probably leaving something out, but it wouldn't be far to drive from Nebraska, either, obviously. Ian could drive to Iowa--Manitoba's not so bad, distance wise. Andrew would probably have to fly, as would the folks from CA, certainly anyone from overseas, obviously; northern Canada might be a problem...is New Orleans at the bottom of Louisiana? I forgot. It's about 16 hours down to New Orleans from here, I think, but I'm not entirely sure on that. (That was for Draga.) Obviously, the folks from Minnesota could head down here. I live about 140 miles west of Chicago. Whatever, y'all.

p.s. And there are about a zillion campgrounds in this state.

Actually, Nebraska is about as middle as your going to get. Nebraska is about 3 days of comfortable, sightseeing at your leisure drive. WE took the drive a few years ago with two kids under the age of six. There are a ton of things to see and do along the way. I'll find out the exact milage as I said we weren't in a hurry and didn't have a destination.

If we met in Omaha which is the mecca of Nebraska you have the Henry Doorly Zoo which boasts the Worlds Biggest Enclosed Rain Forest (which is awsome by the way they let the birds and little monkies just roam amongst you.), They also just built the a huge domed Desert which was pretty cool. The Imax, museams, lakes, camping grounds, hotels, water parks, at the right time you can get into the states largest fair.

I don't have a problem going to another state as long as it isn't California or anywhere with a freeway system anything like California's NO OFFENSE but dying of a heart attack while driving is not my ideal vacation.

I've met lots of other ppl at picnics and various gatherings. Some of my very best friends started out online. It truly is a wonderful thing to know that my best friends understand me and accept me without question.

I wish you the best in organizing a get together :) keep me posted on the where/when. If it's possible to attend, I'll be there, with the family in tow.

O'No lol the Texas loop was easy compaired to the streets of Cali. What is the concept of going from stopped to fifty in mere seconds so you can stop at the next red light? And your red lights is that to keep traffic from speeding? The nice thing about the Cali freeway where all the nice people pointing us in the right direction lmbo and if you miss your exit we found out that taking three left hand turns will get us right back where we started. lmbo

Secondly you could be guarenteed i'd get spun out and hide in a corner drinking burbon and cola all night till i pass out quietly and peacfully without anying anyone too much. lol I didn't mean any offense I was just giving you a hard time. In Nebraska the biggest road we have is eight lanes with four going one direction and four going the other and that road only lasts about 12 miles thru Omaha.

Nebraska has its own drawbacks. There are deer crossings, farmers who drive their combines at 20 down a 65 mile an hour road, tornado's. I think anywhere we have it will have its faults.

There is a small river in the back (http://www.addforums.com/forums/newreply.php) and 155 acres of bush. But summer isn't exactly hunting season and shot and bullets and campers hardly work well together.

We had a deady winter kill two years ago that wiped out most of the fish around here too so it'll be slim pickin's there as well.

Once the seaon has been open for a bit and the weather warms up, I'll get you guys an update.

I can do the camping thing since I have my warm sleeping bag and my insulated undies. Can go as low as lets say, maybe 10 degrees F. or so. but I'd prefer somewhat warmer conditions.

I'll bring my waders but I am not gonna fish. oh no, since I am not sure what to do with the poor thing. If I bring T., my fly guy, then he can do the real thing. He might even learn about, ummmm, his ADHD??? Maybe one of the guys could have a nice talk with him in the river... It could even be a long-long one, as he will be doing most of the hyperfocusing and less of the socializing. Talking is my forte when I am not dreaming about the meaning of 1+1=2. Actually I find that there are so many variables to consider about that problem...

Deeperblue of course we don't know if we want to hang with you, but isn't that the point? To find out some of the reality check that doesn't happen with type written words? ehehh Oh this would be such a ride.

Did anyone set dates for the OHIO crew? Do you guys have dates in mind? I think reservations at the Park might be a good idea. But you guys all need to think carefully about this. I live like a hill billy. We have no square footage to be inside. It's a tiny house with no luxuries. You could rely on us for space as we have no shortage of that. Eggs. We have lots of those. Water, electricity, out house but that's about it I would think.

The shower and bathroom would be a problem to share as it's a zoo with a house full of girls now and we only have the one bathroom. (we sleep standing in separate corners. Manon will get her own corner next fall when M goes off to University :D )

I'm proposing we meet over three days. Something like arriving on a Friday and spend Saturday and Sunday together then go our own ways on the Monday. What do you think?

Should I mention this to PU at all, or should we just surprise her? :D Oh those ADD husbands... never a dull moment! heheh Relax all you fretting worry warts... :P I'll go send an email right now and look after it.

No one can drink a lot of american beer fast - it takes too long to choke it down. I like slow destruction so it fits me perfectly.

If I was in the land of bitters, ale and guiness I would be on the self destruct rocket sled. Although every once in awhile i would pull over for a pilsner urquell.

I understand that but while I'm going to be sad at not getting to go I will have something to look forward to. And you can't have it at the same place every year its hardly fair for those that cannot travel that far. You have to change the location giving everyone a shot at meeting.

I'm typically cautious about anything that is on the net. But there are several people here I'd probably like to meet.

I figure out of 5,000 someone has to be sane enough to call for enforcements should Ian try to boil us in hot oil for his supper. lol

Ok now I don't want to wait for Doug. Anyone know how to run the map thingy? lol

I figured it out all by my lonesome. *grins*

I am exactly 1258.9 km which translates to 12 hours and 2 minutes we've driven much further in a day. On our way to my father's funeral in California we drove for 22 hours not consistantly mind you lol.

Right now we're trying to adjust Doug's class schedule to coincide with the trip. He'll have to speak with his advisor. And I have some issues too but am working on getting them resolved. (Nothing to do with the trip mind you).

Where theres a will, theres a way!!!!

I can't even think of meeting up with a pending out of state move. If Ian's was scheduled for summer 2006 I'd enjoy meeting some of you out there since we'd combine it with a family vacation.

If I'm the only one who shows up, I'm driving to Quebec and kicking Lise's ***.

Of course, I'll only do that if Ian doesn't try to boil me for supper. :p

If that's the case Chrys, you're going to love Quebec! heheh I'm sure you will be as charmed as I was by the very nature of the place. Lise would no doubt win you over with her obvious "Joie de Vievre"

When PU and I spent a gloriously and romantic ten days in Montreal without the kids, we stayed close to the Latin Quarter (http://shorterlink.org/265). We were so impressed wtih the quality of life there. People know how to treasure their culture of fine food, art and entertainment like nowhere else I"ve been in North America. What little French I have, I used willingly and was welcomed with open arms.

We'll go back to Quebec, but next time we'll go to Quebec City (http://shorterlink.org/270) and drink even more deeply of that lust for life Québécois seem to have in such abundance.

Chrys, I have it on pretty good authority that you're a little on the thin side for soup. Maybe we could arrange some kind of simple sacrifice instead? :P Seriously, we have every intention of of welcoming everyone warmly and trying to make the stay as enjoyable as we can.

If there are very few of us we can easily do things that larger groups can't like fit in a canoe! ;)

We'll take lots of pictures!

Not many have confirmed to be headed our way, but I think in the beginning it will be hard for folks to commit to such an big investment of time and energy as this is going to require, without having some idea that it's going to be worth it.

Your efforts will pay off later when people are more used to doing this kind of thing. I belonged to a crew on IRC for ages and they met annually and had done so for years. They were a little rougher than I'd be interested in meeting, but it all looked like fun in the photos afterward. :)

Understandably there is a lot of cautious talk about this kind of meeting. I've never been one to play it safe, but that doesn't mean I'm asleep at the switch. There will be a saftey net in place and a good supply of contacts and communication to help defray the risks.

It will come in time fasttalkingmom. I'm certainly not expecting crowds. I'm prepared, but not holding my breath. :foot:
Cheers!

My only worry about Ian is i need a long week of being from work. My real vacation from work are 2 weeks during Christmas because the center is closed. So i dont really have a choice for that. but i am trying to arrange something.

Unless you guys want to come to Québec instead of at Ian's :D

KIDDING! I am not terribly worried that you're going to process my little carcass into snack food. I'd be awfully stringy. :p Plus it would completely obliterate any decent karma you have. :D
No, seriously, though...
LISE, YOU ARRANGED ALL THIS, CHICA!
Good Holy...hm...how far away is Quebec again?

I had the chance to meet 2 people from the forum this last weekend(two different meetings, it just happened to be on the same weekend)

They both were great experiences with long lasting memories. There are a few other of us that are "planning" a get together soon. I am sure that it will also be filled with terrific memories

I would say that if you ever get the chance to meet somebody on the forum, that you have become friends with.............go for it. Who knows if you will ever get the experience again to do something like that

I already have...

I guess if you had to do it the right way...you would have to "get" to know them as well as possible. And of course meet them in a public place....like you would meeting someone online..from a "dating" or friendship service? Right? Esp if you are meeting the oppsite sex?

I met AuntChris..who lives literally right down the street from me...She and I chatted her quite awhile..then chit-chatted on the phone..then met for lunch...it's cool!

So Why Not? As long as you are "smart" about it..right?

That's how I feel about it too Hope.
It's not something to rush into, no matter how well you think you a person.
I have talked on the phone with one person from here, a real sweetie:) , we haven't talked much lately, I kinda miss her:( , but we've both been too busy. (oops, sorry, off topic, that never happens here:p )

Right...even if you meet someone in person you don't really know them...it's a big scary world...and you just have to be careful...

And I chat with a few members fairly regular basis from here..that are tooo far away to meet....it's cool...but we chatted quite awhile before even doing that...
I hear you.....just like regular "in person" friends..

I guess phone call through here are modern versions of "pen pals" LOL

Anyone in the St. Louis/Metro East/Carbondale areas who wants to meet at a bookstore or something-would be fun-safe-and no expectations-just a howdy and swap some stories.

Everybody I would currently consider meeting lives too far away from me for it to be feasible, but yea, I'd meet some forum members. I keep thinking maybe I oughta swing by and see Speedo on my way up North one of these times...I go right past him!

I got to know fasttalkingmom. She lives the next town over! We got together over coffee (I mean tea;) ) She is so sweet (hi there FTM:) )

It seemed wierd to me at first but I could tell that by communicating online and by e-mail that she is a genuine honest person.

So I agree that it's cool as long as you are mature enough and have a good sense of judgment.

I would Love to meet the friends I've made on this forum and hey maybe make some new ones as well. We could all have an AD{H}D Bash. :D The best part would be -if nothing else- we'd be among friends who understand and accept us just the way we are! :D

I am kin to two members here so I knew them before they joined. I was the one who found this place and told them about it. I have talked to three others on the phone but all are far away from where I live. It seems like every one here from the US lives up north {probably because south of my location is Mexico}

Minn, I am glad you had a great time and a memorable experience. I also met someone from the forum. Justhope and I met. It is amazing how 2 people on the forum live in the same city and talk on the same forum.

Maybe from where you guys are. The chances of meeting some one from this town of 1100 in BFE Texas where I live in is probably about the same as winning the lottery even though I don't play. . . . I have met justhope too. . . . she takes being super glued to the dinning room table real nicely . . okay she took it better than my mom did.
