What is the best, most appropriate way to help them?

Help them with what?

I think with ADHD most problems need to be tackled on an individual, specific basis. There are very few generic approaches that work across the board except the usual such as be kind, understanding, patient, fair, consistent, honest and reliable .. Just as with other kids.

As for super generic approaches I can only think of two that are relevant to someone with ADHD:

Interventions are most useful at the point of performance.

If they don't have a good psychiatrist get them to one.

Oh..and another one: try to learn as much as possible about ADHD.

What I meant was, if, for example, a guy has a girlfriend whose son has A.D.H.D. how can he be a friend, an influence in his life?

The place to start would be learning what it's like to live with ADHD so you can
be understanding and supportive.

Look on youtube for videos about ADHD, especially those by Dr. Russell Barkley
and Dr. Charles Parker.

And you can learn a lot by checking out the parenting forum here on ADDF,
the sticky threads are really helpful.
