3 business men check into a hotel. They each chip in $10 for a (cheap) room.

The front desk clerk realizes she made a mistake by overcharging $5 for the men's room it should have been $25.

She gives the bellman the $5 and asks him to take it up to the men. Being a slick bellman he tells them the room was only $27 and gives each of the 3 men a $1 back and pockets the $2 left from the five.

Each man initially paid $10 each. Each of the 3 men received $1 back so it was actually $9 for the room. $9 X 3 men = $27. The bellman kept $2 which equals $29. What happened to the missing dollar?

This is a bait and switch .

There is no missing dollar.

The men paid $9 each, total $27.

$25 went to the clerk and $2 to the bellhop.

as with any word problem I've ever encountered, i'm wondering, what city, what line of work are these guys in and what does the hotel lobby look like...

They are Detroit drug dealers and the motel lobby looks like a crack house.
