Im back on Dexamphetamine ir after being off for three years. I'm prescribed 6 a day. I'm finding I'm getting highs and lows throughout the day which is borderline bipolar. When I take the pills I feel awesome for an hour then miserable until I take my next dose. Is this happening because I just started again at a relatively high dose? I don't remember the ups and downs being so bad before. I also take mirtazapine at night to help me sleep, could that be interacting with the Dex? I'm worried and feeling miserable.

' why do you say borderline bipolar?' I'm on about that. Look at your diet. Set a rountine, however I do think the ups and downs are always there.
Drink water that I fail to do.
Why did you have a break?

When you say borderline bipolar do you mean that is your diagnosis?

No I mean the Dex is giving me mood swings up and down. I took a break because my dr passed away.

If you didn't take dex for 3 years it makes sense to start with a slow dose and gradually increase it to the required dose just as if you'd never taken dex at all. What helps me even out the mood swings is to take small doses at small intervals with the first dose being the largest one.

Not to get nit picky or soap boxy but I would appreciate it if you wouldnt use the bipolar term to describe being moody. You have no idea what things have been like for me lately and that everyone seems to toss the bipolar phrase around like its nothing.

I think you are on the money I might take two or three in the morning then 1 every 2 hours and see how I go.

Isn't Vyvanse just the extended release version of dexamphetamine?

I'm in Australia we only have a choice between Dex or ritinal. Something weird has happened the last couple of days. It's not being as affective anymore. I am way to hungry which I have never been in Dex in the past. This is weird. I take mirtazipine at night so I can sleep and just started taking fish oil vitamin d3 and magnesium chelate at night. Does anyone here know is mirtazipine alters the effects of Dex at all?

I just searched good is vyvance good compared to Dex? I just searched good and I'm surprised it's available here. Is it stronger than Dex?

I have never tried it but I assume that it's not necessarily stronger than dex. That would depend on the dose. It's just the extended release version of dex, i.e. it is supposed to last longer.

Mirtazapine may possibly be the culprit being a SSRI. SSRI's are notorious for making people hungrier than bears and sleepy.

Probably talking to your doc would be best.

I knew it was roughly the same. I might go to the dr and see what he says.
Getting tired of having to pop pills all day.

Hi there mate, i'm in Australia as well... i knew about Vyvanse before i even visited the psychiatrist for my 1st time. yes it was just released in australia this year but it's bloody expensive if you compared to Aspen Pharma generic dexamphetamine we get (200 X 5mg= 22 AUD at discount chemist) i think for vyvanse you need 6x this money if not even more.

Vyvanse is a modern drug it works better for some but still some are more OK with Dex (which is the least ADD drug with side effects/abuse and majority of people satisfied being on it).
i`m not interested in it as i don't have a job so ritalin/dexa are my options, or some anti-depressant along like wellbutrin (goes in australia as an anti smoking drug!)

i`m on dexa for 3+ months already and really can't tell if it's good... i lack motivation.beside scattered focus can`t write resumes and get disheartened fast to apply for more jobs (a migrant).. which was my main concern from the beginning i really wish to try Meth (ritalin) and hope doctor won't be fussed about it.
Do you know if i'm allowed Dexa for 6 months, Psychiatrist can still use the same license to get me a different med for a trial month let's say?

GL What state are you in and which city? Dex has always been easy to get for me. Just need a good psychiatrist who specialises in add.

I knew Sarah would know. Vyvanse is a complete ripoff here.

It's about $140 for 30 days, it's not covered by the PBS ( Pharmacetical Benefits Scheme)

I might rob a bank to get some. Just to try it. Dexamphetamine 28 Days supply is $20.

You could also go to a compound chemist, this isn't cheap either.

no vyvanse is lisdexamphetamine

Yes I know but the "lis" bit just indicates that dexamphetamine is coupled with lysine releasing dex gradually. The active ingredient is still dexamphetamine.

No, Dexedrine is the extended release version of dexamphetamine.

Vyvance does not have dosage equivalence with dex, far from it in fact.

Mirtazapine may possibly be the culprit being a SSRI. SSRI's are notorious for making people hungrier than bears and sleepy.

Mirtazapine is not a SSRI. It is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA). It has no significant effect as a reuptake inhibitor for dopamine, norepinephrine, or serotonin.

Its tremendous appetite-stimulant and drowsiness effects are because it has affinity for the histamine receptor, triggering the same effects as any of the old-school antihistamines, like Benadryl.

For me, 15mg doesn’t make me that sleepy, but my goodness, it gave me truly insatiable appetite. I either take it at night before bed, or alongside my dex, which balances my appetite to be fairly normal overall.

cheers,
Ian
