What's the difference between psychopaths and sociopaths? Or are they the same thing but under a different name?

Same thing.

The former term is used more in the mainstream media and the latter more in the academic literature.

Sociopath was introduced as a politically correct term for sociology. People aren't born bad, society creates monsters, something like that. However, it seems like a lot of the traits are inherrited - which of course isn't ideologically acceptable, only somewhat scientifically true. By the way, psychopath isn't a good term any way, it only means mentally ill.
