Ok some of you may know that i have been dealing with a bad abcess in my mouth due to a broken tooth. Last tuesday i saw the dentist and he put me on antibiotics to treat the infection, my face was half swallon, and it hurt like hell.
Anywyas i took the antibiotic, and by saturday i felt kind of better , sunday and monday it was wonderful, i still had swelling but not as much.
So tuesday morning when i got up the swallen as started again, and the pain at double. I went to work but it hurt like hell, my midafternoon, the pain was unbarable. Got home, and called the dentist, they gave me an emergency visit on wenesday. Well during the night before the dentist i did not sleep all night the pain was so bad, i could hardly speak to my kids. I did not go to work , before my app that was at 12:00 ...I sat in the chair and the dentist looked at me puzzled,,,i told him, ''please tell me you saw this before ? and he said, not really, when the antibiotic starts to work it rarely starts up again so fast.

I was like thinking, great , why cant it be just a simple routine things....no oh no, not for me it as to be a freaking complications ...GRRRR lol..

So he says i will have to drain it...At that time, if i could have talked without pain i would have made the face and told him, '' what are you talking about willis'' LOL...but i could not and i said '' is it gonna be painfull?
He says ''yes''
I say '' how long is it going to last ''
He says '' 2 to 3 minutes ''
I thought '' 2 or 3 minutes in freaking pain looks like hours , i started to freak out a little bit. I could not even touch my cheek , even barely without causing extreme pain to myself.:faint:
I said you will only cut me once and squeeze it out?
He said '' no maybe 3 or 4 times to be able to get to the part where the puss is''
And then he said, '' you understand i will not be able to ''freeze'' ( anesthisie...dont know the spelling lol), because of the infection and i will cut your gums with a scalpel. '' :eyebrow: :faint: :faint: :faint: .
I told him, that maybe he could learn to lie to is patient a little more, just in case it could make them feel better.

So he proceded to do it. It did last 3 minutes, I will not get into the details of the pain. But i can tell you, i have no more pain since last night..and i am dancing up the walls....i will remember that i should trust more my dentist. ANd as a bonus , he did not even charge me a penny to do it.

My friend the dentist....still NOT :p :)

ps; i know this is not important to you...but i feel so releive i had to say something LOL..i have a dentist phobia...so it's not easy for me .

I struggle with dentists and doctors. I have trouble submitting to their help without panic. Stories where someone has had their faith boosted in the help of medical practitioners, is a comfort to me. Good luck on the healing Digitl!
Cheers! Ian

Dig, for a tooth infection/abscess, you should have been given a 10 day supply of antibiotics. That is medical protocol, and I don't think, by what you have posted that you had 10 days treatment. If you did, you would highly unlikely had to go through what you did. Hope you are feeling better. :) Abcess really are SOoooo painful:( !

Dig,

You know my horror story. You should have went to the hospital as I did they give your some really great meds there *giggles* for pain.

Anyways, my tooth is gone, the swelling is gone, the bruising and trauma is still there but hey you already know how much fun I had with that. *grins*

I feel great too and I'm glad your feeling better. I found a really good dentist this time I didn't even feel the shots!!! can you believe it not a one and I was in the hospital longer getting the IV antibiotics then getting my tooth numbed and pulled. The dentist was only with me for like 10 minutes I'm not kidding. He's a keeper and get this I'm going back MOnday hows that for freaky? Find a good dentist shop around.

Where was I going? I don't remember but I was going somewere but got all excited that you feel better. Ah well I'll remember when I'm sleeping.

Big hugs,
Cherity

I love my dentist yet somehow I do believe that he loves my teeth more. The last time I was there  he kept taking pictures for his class.

Talk about invasion of privacy.

He wanted to show off his new and improved procedure. But did he give me a break on the cost.! Excuse me!!! No.

I think that he now owns the copy rights to my mouth and I don't even get royalties.

My bad dentist experience started on a baby tooth that would not fall out, and he took it out, and since it did not stop bleeding, he got the needle and thread out. No one as ever saw a 5 yrs old get up that chair as fast as i could, ran in the waiting area like i had fire on my butt.

And also i have no protection on my teeth, so i had to go see the dentist on a regular basis, but still got root canals, cavities , eventho i floss and wash my teeth 3 times a day. I get them clean twice a year, even the cleaning is hell for me, i hate the thought of going to the dentist...i dont know how many visit i cancelled, and took back lol....just make my hell longer really lol... :D

Digitl...Glad your better. 10 to 14 days of antibiotics is a standard protocol for infections.. It's a good idea to make sure that abcess site drains completely, all it needs too,...you don't want that site to heal over with any pus still traped in their...ouch again....

Bottom Line....I'm glad your better.........:)

I have a complete phobia aobut dentists and resolved never to go again, cept I had a cracked filling which got some abcess and required a root canal.

Well I had a firm talk with my brand new dentist because I had to, and I said: I have a phobia nothing personal, I need something because I need to be sure I never feel a thing.

So now I get the following: prepill that put under my tongue one hour before. Nitrous. Pre freezing which he actually puts a wad of and lets it soak in. Freezing in a very generous amount.

Plus he is cute.

Now I go regularly, because I know there will be no pain. Thank god I was a floss maniac so my gums are in great shape.

He didnt' laugh at me at all and helped me work out the combination of stuff to use on me..whew.

Please consider it. Esp the nitrous if you can because it helps you feel a little buzzy, and can't superfocus on the drill drill drill drill drill.

Oh and I agree with Rhapsody, when I had my root canal abcess I had to take a really strong STRONG antibiotic for 10 days. They told me DO NOT MISS ANY PILLS.

Otherwise the bacteria would not all be dead.

Just as a laugh, it was so strong I swear I didnt need to use deodorant for the entire time!

Digitl,
I have been wondering where you have been. I ususally see you in the chit chat but haVent. I know what you mean not going to the dentist. I dont like the dentist either. I have problems with my teeth too. I had a root canal about 10 yrs ago and about 2 years ago that exact tooth fell out. Since I had braces and have to wear a retainer every night I had to have a false tooth put in its spot.

I know the pain been there to deary. It is not pleasant either. I feel for you. I hope you are feeling better and can talk our ears off soon. Just some auntchris humor.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes :) i feel so luvvvvvvvvvvv :D

As for you girls and guys who wonder about my antibiotic story... Which i did forget to mention  lol

I was put on 10 days lowest dose of antibiotic. Because with all the talks about over taking antibiotic, i am very weary about taking them . So since i did not have antibiotic for many years, i ask to take something low . And i took all the ones 4 times a day, and for 4 days it was going down and i was feeling better. But it started to get swallown agian. When he cut my gums, he did give me a stronger antibiotc for another 10 days.

I am still on them, and taken them religiously, and i still have a bump i guess the abcess on my cheek, but no more plain or swelling, i am going to see him on Monday to take the tooth out.

Once that tooth is out you will be a free woman...for a while anyway.

I'm just quivering thinking about yur whole ordeal you had to go through. So not fun!

Thanks for explaining the antibiotic, sometimes I don't like to take medicine either till i'm pretty desperate.

Tell him what I told my dentist...go slow and I'll let you know if there is anywhere you missed numbing. he pulled to the right and I could feel some pain on the left, he took care of it and the tooth was out faster then it took him to numb me. lol

He's a keeper I have decided.

You'll do great!!! Just think about how badly it hurt before the meds and that will give you a little incentive to not only go today but for future visits.

Yeah, I hope you're doing well, too. Major dental procedures are no fun at all. Ineffective-or-no-anesthetic is horrifying! (Have nightmares about the root canal @ 8 mo. pregnant.) I hope they gave you plenty of pain meds. Wow, an abcess...eek. Holy...dang.
