View Full Version : What is punch ?

Punch, I mean... hmmm, character mayhaps ?

Rage Against the Machine is pure punch.
Captain Haddock contains a lot.
Ektomorf is nothing else.
Batman is moments.

It's not nice. It's too straight on for that. Punch is... generally controversial. It... delivers such genuine eccentricity or charisma, nothing fake about it. It defines its own quality for being, without being wrapped in pink gloves, that sensation when you skydive. The hardcore centre of, this is what we do best, leave out the rest. No matter how simple it gets, it doesn't sell out because it leaves the scene with a 'F you' on the forehead.

Justin Bieber has little.
Linkin Park in the beginning quiet some.
Crowley but mostly Dean from Supernatural (but sometimes slips)
Broly from Dragonball Z is about made from it
Tarantino generally channels punch nicely

It's the tendency to aim for the meaningful but being naturally drawn to that which just doesn't pretend. Maybe it's better described as raw quality. You taste strong Rhum, you cough, you laugh; your mates smile along and you say something in the lines of 'hot damn, and I thought I was a pirate' ;)

That you mentioned Captain Haddock amongst the other characters makes me smile.

Punch= animal instinct? The shadow archetype? Freudian id?

No it's what I call certain things. Maybe didn't explain it too well though

Stef, it is possible to find Tintin published in the US. I started collecting the books when we were living in Europe, so I have a weird mix of the U.K. and US published translations.

I loved the Tintin cartoons they showed here on channel 3 when my son was little!
he has a few of the albums, too.

Um as far as punch, yes character and charisma
My mind goes blank though, I can't think of any more examples.
What are those movies with Stallone and Jason Statham etc. and then there is chuck norris at some point (they actually play exceprt of music from one of those clint eastwood westerns). anyway one of THOSE guys.

(this is how I talk at home and annoy my family :) )

The cartoons are Canadian and remarkably true to the books. I was very sad when they took those off US Netflix.

Canadian? wow I figured they were some Franco-Belgian thing.
Yes they were brilliantly done. And really nice for kids, funny and original.

Punch: The big Lebowski. THE DUDE!

Yesss exactly

So is Tyler Durden

I do consider simple stuff like Slipknot or Saw punch as well, but it's bits more personal with considerable lower quality, where I only focus on raw punch, rather than raw quality.

Punch to me would be a set of horns. That punch they add in certain songs.

aw that warms my heart!
the "punch" is one of the things i love about trumpet
especially when the whole section is just totally in the moment

Yes! It is true! And I just go nuts when I see some of the horn players lift them up for that punch! That tight punch of the horns. :)

There was only one line during the one liner as the punch of the line was a punch line.

That was a one liner one line, in the form of a punch liner containing a lot of punch.

It sounds to me like "punch" in this sense means a quick and very effective use of a tightly-focused burst of energy.

It's how to be Batman in his best moments; it's also how the hot horn section transforms the song.

A killer whale has punch - a blue whale doesn't have it but doesn't need it.

If I referred to someone as punchy or something they did as having/carrying punch... I would mean they're some combination of attention-getting/forceful/lively. Not necessarily controversial at all, though could be depending on the specifics.
