Hello.
I am a new member. :)

I have been trying to learn chess for a while, but due to my impatience (and lack of concentration), I have never figured out how to play. I came across a great site with easy to follow instructions on how to play chess. It's quite difficult and there are over 10 chapters!
I did a search on "benefits of playing chess" and chess helps develop logical thinking, creativity, independence, self-motivation, etc..
Does anyone play chess? I am going to give it a go, after I learn all the rules, and I will post an update and let you know if it has helped with my Adult ADD.
Just wanted to know if games such as these really do help or whether it's all a farce..

I know how to play chess but I don't enjoy it. But I don't enjoy most games like that. I can enjoy playing darts if someone else is keeping tabs on the numbers and strategy! :D I'm hopeless that way.

I have tended recently to spend more time chasing skills I'm good at and less time trying to foster skills that have always escaped me. I get more success in my life and I feel a lot better about who and what I am.
Just a thought.
Cheers!

I like playing chess, if it is a "friendly" game with a resonable time limit for your moves. I have found it to be a great way to enjoy time with family and friends. Capt Kylos

I play chess. I do think it increases your ability to concentrate, but I prefer knitting, which has the same effect but can be done alone. Chess does have the benefit of competition, though.

Ian, you're just too impatient. (Good grief, look who just said that!)

I love to play chess
Even though I rarely win.
I never see certain moves that are very clear to my friends who play.
I have a chess board and also play on line chess.
It's more fun for me to play when its a friendly game.
Honestly I don't find it helps my ADD.
But it does get me to concentrate and think more so who knows maybe it is helping lol.

I know how to play chess, but I don't enjoy it much. :P Once in a while, I'll fire up gnuchess, but I usually lose. :-)

I had the unfortunate (or fortunate) luck to grow up next to a kid that ended up being a chess master. I learned from him. He had about 5-6 years on me but boy could he play. I never did beat him.

Saw an ad in the paper a few years ago and he was playing 100 people at the local mall. If you beat him you got some pretty good bucks.

I won lots of ribbons and trophies as a kid playing chess because he mentored me. Yes, I was a member of the chess club for a hot minute in high school - then I got hair... and discovered girls.

I always enjoyed playing but no one I know plays. I don't believe I played at all in the last 20 years. Still have a dream about it once in awhile.

I have often thought it would be great to learn chess.I get as far as learning what each piece does, then it suddenly occurs to me that I'm bored witless.
Now if it was a bit more mobile.........

I tried playing chess when I was 10/11, could never remember where to move what piece, apart from the pawn, and I found it too hard to concentrate on I just moved the pieces quickly to get it over and done with,I only did it because I had nothing else to do at school.

Nevermind playing chess, having to watch it is just plain wrong, and sadistic. :D
