View Full Version : I need help and I know you all have the answer I need but I am not getting it.
kabookie 05-16-05, 12:49 AM I currently go to a General Doctor that specializes in ADD. I have been tested and have been taking medication since December 04. I am currently looking for a new doctor because my current doctor makes me wait to see him 4 –sometimes 5 hours I will sit in the small room. When I finally get out it is 7:30 and all offices have closed and the cleaning crew is cleaning up. It is unbelieveable and I almost went insane the last time I was there.
I am fed up with this and I can not take an entire day off of work each month to go get my medication. If I were to do that..that would be 12 days and all of my vacation. NO WAY. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
I have noticed that on the Add forum page-the recommended doctors are Therapists, psychologists, etc. I do not think that they can prescribe medication (I could be wrong.)
I don’t want to make things worse by going to two doctors when I really only want to go see one person. How does this work? How do you find a doctor that prescribes medication? I have already been diagnosed and do not want to go see a therapist so that she can tell me to go see a dr.
How do you find dr that specializes in ADD that can prescribe medication, do blood tests on site, etc?? Any help would be great.

Gourmet 05-16-05, 01:18 AM Hi Holly!
I can tell you what I did.
I called my family doctor's office to ask if my doctor diagnosed for ADD. He did not and his office suggested a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Insurance would not pay a psychologist for me , but that is who I chose to see because my family doctor is agreeable to work with a psychologist and follow his suggestions for medication, etc.
The psychologist gave the confirmation to my doc. and then I followed up with a visit and recieved a prescription. So the two basically worked together on my behalf just through communication.
The psychologist visit was rather intimate and since I saw someone in private practice, I did not have a wait.
It sounds unreasonable to me that you should have to wait that long to see a doctor! Is that every time, or just during flu season, or what?
If I were you, I would make some calls and take notes on which doctors and pschologists are willing to collaborate on a paitient's diagnosis and which offices do their own lab work. Then proceed from there.
Don't be afraid to see a pshychologist like I was....it was actually kind of fun!
good luck!

Your medical doctor can diagnose ADD and prescribe medications for you.
Gourmet 05-16-05, 02:14 AM Some medical doctors do diagnose, however in my area, there are none who do .....we are not metropolitan, but are a larger city...growing with many practicing physicians. All of the doctors that I called said they gave referrals to psch doctors and Phds for ADD. So my suggestion along with speedo would be to make many phone calls and take notes before making the appointment....hopefully you can find one in your area who will do it all :)
lotsofconfusion 05-16-05, 03:32 AM I had gotten my diagnosis from a neruopsychologist who specialises in adhd, however because she is a Psychologist, she can not write a perscription. She did give me suggestions of several meds that could help and I told my GP, who wrote the prescription.
A Psychiatrist who specializes in ADHD would actually be better because they can write prescriptions. They also have the knowlege of how these meds will help adhd better than a regular dr. I'm not sure about the lab work though. I would try a psychiatrist and if blood work is needed (and they don't have a lab) try a walk in clinic to have the results delivered to wherever it needs to be. Does this make sense or am i just rambling here?
Best of luck!
I agree with lotsofconfusion,go with a pyschiatrist-it saves a lot of time,if deemed as needing medication.
GP I go to refuses to give ADHD meds,so get referred to pyschiatrist instead making any previous pyschologist visits pointless really.
You shouldn't have to wait that long to see a GP,that is ridiculous,is there no bigger GP/medical centres nearby?
I don't think we even get that kind of waiting time for accident and emergency at english hospitals.

Our children's therapist cannot prescribe meds; but, works well with their pediatrician keeping him up to date after each session she sends him a summary and makes suggestions as to whether or not meds would help and what meds she believes would work. If he disagrees he'll call her otherwise he calls the prescription in to the pharmacy that day for us. Its important that your medical team work well together in my honest opinion.
meadd823 05-16-05, 11:43 PM I go to a Neuropsychiatrist. He specializes in neurology and pshchiatry and he writes the triplicate prescription right there while I am in his office. I only go see him every three months. The other two months in between my appointments I call when I get within a week of running out of medications. He writes the perscription and sends it in the mail.
Now I have to take an entire day off work for my appointment but first of all it is once every three months (couldn't do monthly) second I do not take an entire day off because I have to wait in the doctor's office. The doctor has waited for me to arrive more often than I have waited to get into see him. I take an entire day off because I live 400 miles away. I fly from Austin to Midland, rent a car, go see him and fly back to Austin.
I refuse to change doctors. My point is regular medical doctors can write the scrips, neurologist may treat ADD as well as psychiatrist. I would call around. Oddly enough I found a doctor for my children when I lived in Kerreville by asking a pharmiast they fill the prescriptions I figured they would know which doctors write them. Kerreville was a pretty small place so this was feasible.
There is a palce called Addconsultants.com that may be able to help. I know they do coaches by area but I believe they do doctors also.
Waiting four or five hours monthly is not acceptable on a regular basis!!!! Have you tried asking him or his nurse why!!!!!
KnittingJunkie 05-17-05, 01:05 AM I do the same thing--my doc is focused on neuro and psych. He can treat my anxiety, my seizures, and diagnose my ADD, so it's really a bit of a time- and money-saving thing to go to him in my case. Otherwise I'd probably have to see one person for my epilepsy and another for the other stuff.
Regardless of seizures or lack thereof, some of society forgets that ADD is actually a neurobiological disorder, it's not just a psychiatric thing. Even though a psych may very well be able to handle this neuroscientific issue capably, I just prefer someone with specific training and knowledge of practice in the neurological sciences.
