So I have my Doc appointment tomorrow. I was talking to my brother about this and he told me that he had been diagnosed when he was 25 and had been put on Rittilen(sp?), Strattera, and something else before finally being put on the one thing that worked without overwhelming him with side effects, adderall. Is there any way I can push the doc tward adderall since it worked so well for my brother?

Just the fact that I had never know he was add blew me away. When I look back at it I can see that around 20 he was always high strung and "Flakey" but then mellowed out and later got his *** in gear. He said it just got to a point where it was affecting every aspect of his life so he went in to get help. Which is the point I am at. I always had the tendencies and worked hard to control them, but the last couple years I have gradually lost control over it and came to the stinging realization of it during a blowup with the wife.

I keep changing majors, skipping semesters in school.

My work is suffering. In my latest evaluation at work I was rated the best out of everyone in my tech department. The only gripe was that I would put everything off till the last minute and was often doing 5-6 things at a time instead of focusing on the task at hand

My Credit has gone in the toilet because even though I have the money I forget or put off bills till they are massively overdue.

I have been racking up speeding tickets

I loose junk constantly. Spend 10 minutes looking for my cell phone and it is in my pocket or hand, I'll set something down and it is GONE. Later I'll find it stuffed in a bookcase or under a couch cushion

I'll get focused on an item or vehicle buy it then focus on reselling it

I'll do it tomorrow, I'll do it tomorrow, I'll do it tomorrow, 3 weeks later... it will hit me that I never did it.

I forgot to lock the house up and someone went in and walked away with my laptop

My wiff can't trust me to do anything(I don't blame her). When she asks me if I did something she requested days, weeks ago I'll lie and say I did then rush around like a madman to complete it. And I am not even focused enough to get away with the lie. I always leave some incriminating evidence out where she can find it. I also sometimes make impulsive buys without even thinking of calling her. Which is a big deal when it is a car or vacation.

Reading used to be and is a joy for me, but I find myself getting bored and skipping paragraphs or pages till I get to something interesting.

I am having a hard time in social settings knowing when to talk, catching myself interrupting and then just holding back to keep from embarassing myself.
But then on the flip side I will go out to the garage and get so immersed in my project car of the month that I will space out all previous commitments

Wow it feels good to vent alittle, even though I did go waaaayyy off topic

Hi HIXX and welcome! Be sure and let us know how the dr. appointment went. As far as medication goes, I think you'll just have to trust your dr. on this one. Each person reacts differently to the different medications and what works for your brother may or may not work for you.

You can certainly talk to your dr. about it, but keep an open mind!

Sounds a bit like me except without the changing majors, speeding tickets, and the wife. :P

I think I'd just make sure to mention to the doc when he/she takes your history that your brother has ADD and that he tried Ritalin and Strattera, and is now on Adderall and doing well.

Good luck.

Tell your doctor that not only do you want to try adderall, but you also have heard of more side effects with straterra. My hubby has taken adderall for years but his doctor wanted him to try straterra after the drug had been out for about a year. The doctor wrote him a prescription and right after he got it filled, we got a call from the doctor's office stating that he should not take it and to stay with the adderall. The doctor took all of his patients off of straterra due to recent informatioon received from the pharmacutical company warning of more cases of liver damage being reported with straterra.

Just got out of my Dr's appointment. He was more than willing to put me on Adderall given my symptoms but also gave me the name of a specialist to go to to get a full psych workup and come back with the full write up before making a med decision. I went with option # 2. I guess I can always request drugs but I feel that I have put this off long enought I might as well pay the 2-300 to get the full picture. The worst part was that I am not an emotional person, but I almost fell apert during my explanation of what's going on. I guess it doesn't help that I haven't been to the Doc for anything other than a rugby injury in 8 years.
