I'm the mother of an 8-year-old, 3rd grade ADHD/Impulsive boy. We currently live in the Fox Valley (Aurora) area but will be re-locating downstate to LaSalle County over the summer. Our boy was initially diagnosed in May 2002 and medication seemed to work pretty well.
Then we hit third grade and things starting coming apart. There were a lot of things I just didn't know about and his teachers didn't offer a lot of suggestions even though we were in contact regularly. When I found out the neighbor boy was getting extra help and assistance for mild social issues, I finally called and asked why my child wasn't being helped. I know this isn't a contest, but if her son qualified for help, then my kid should too. The teacher thought the social worker was too busy, but she'd call and see. Nothing happened, so I called the Student Services Coordinator (they used to call him the assistant principal back in the day). Thanks to him, the school is now bending over backwards to get my boy tested and whatever they can do before we move.
Now my knee hurts from kicking myself for not getting help sooner and forcing the issue more, I'm angry with the teacher (she called to report him putting staples in his mouth in November, then there were the hand-warming incidents) - but when I learned about the school social worker from another parent, the teacher thought the SSW was too busy.
I've been lurking here and glad to see so many of these issues addressed and discussed. I feel a lot better about moving forward and trying to help my son find ways to succeed thanks, in large part, to this forum - maybe I'll give my knee a rest now.
Thank you for letting me introduce myself and give some background - I look forward to reading, learning and contributing here.
