View Full Version : Who talks with him/herself ? johny 05-24-05, 05:16 AM any one does it? I used to! but it went away on Ritalin! I knew if I told a doctor about it they would have thought about OCD or schizophrenia :D Ichpuchtli 05-24-05, 07:52 AM I have a hell of alot of friends but I still talk to myself, although know one but me knows most of the time because I talk to myself in my head. T-Bass 05-24-05, 10:26 AM I argue with myself , one day it will just be talk. T-Bass EYEFORGOT 05-24-05, 10:30 AM I think it's normal to talk to yourself. I do it a lot. (not as much as when I was a teenager, I think it was stress induced and an active imagination) That I'm not sure about, being normal, given how much I do it. I joke with friends that I like taking a kid or two or three shopping with me because I mutter to myself going through the store. If I went alone I'd still be muttering away. The good part is that it clears aisles for me, the rest of the world wants to give me a wide birth (berth?). gypsysway 05-25-05, 09:09 AM a couple of hours ago, I was told to quit that, because it's rude in the company of others. WHAT EVVVERRR !! I Just Think Out Loud. like I have always done it don't do it no different, no matter what my mental state is. just the way it is. I just think out load. Big deal, he'll just have to get over it and if I was talking to someone they'll know it. l Gray216 05-25-05, 09:38 AM Not really. But, although I don't have Tourette's, I do have moments like that. Particularly if I'm in the shower. Some moment of regret almost always pops into my head and some brash phrase or word comes out faster than I can process it. FightingBoredom 05-25-05, 09:55 AM Actually, I don't talk to myself..... my self talks to me  But we have great conversations and sometimes I even get to be "right." That's why I spend so little time with others! :p johny 06-08-05, 03:10 AM Great, but talking to myself is one of distractions when I try to concentrate, I mean as soon as I try to focus it comes, sth like hyperactivity that some people face when they try to focus. HighFunctioning 06-08-05, 08:00 PM any one does it? I used to! but it went away on Ritalin! I knew if I told a doctor about it they would have thought about OCD or schizophrenia :D Well, at least schizophrenia is usually doesn't appear until at least 17 years of age. I've been talking to myself since I ... started talking. dfac001 06-09-05, 04:58 AM um...i talk to myself quite a lot too...but it's more like the ADD bad communication and social skills...often i talk to myself to practice my conversational topics... but my dad...i'm concern about him....he talks to himself way too much...um...is it a problem? my dad doesn't seem to have ADD...he's very normal...but my mom has ADD...so she doesn't take care of the family...my dad is left with all the chores, paying bills, fixing problems, buying geoceries, etc etc...so he talks to himself a lot...often complaining about doing all the chores yep...i'm not into the daughter loving father fetish...but that's the kind of husband an ADD woman should have... Nova 06-09-05, 04:03 PM I've always 'talked to myself' through things. I don't talk outloud, though. But my mind is always on, and is always 'talking to me', about situations. I don't think there is anything wrong with that, as long as it isn't being stuck, in a negative pattern, for too long. Nova Deeperblue 06-09-05, 04:34 PM lately I have been cursing to myself. :( :o and sometimes I am loud enough, I am sure that the neighbor can hear me. But he seems to ignore the outburst, knowing full well that i struggle with issues of self regulation and control. :foot: Albino Fox 06-09-05, 04:41 PM Oh yeah, I certainly talk to myself, mostly in my head, but not too uncommonly, out loud. It's like I want to know that I said this or that to myself. And then there's also the justification of practicing in case it helps me talk to the few people I know. Much like dfac001 said, I sometimes talk out loud or in my head in order to practice explaining something I want to be able to talk about. As a matter of fact, if I'm speaking out loud and expressing multiple sentences very smoothly and effectively, there's an extremely high chance that I've gone over the whole thing beforehand. I argue with myself ...That definitely happens from time to time too. I've even made up a couple characters who represent the two sides of me that argue with each other.:D Nova 06-10-05, 08:49 PM Cr*p, DeeperBlue- It's when I don't have outbursts, that most worry. Try doing it in 'foofy, girly' clothes, hair and makeup...to boot...everyone gets over it, though, if you grin at them, afterwards.. Who cares? It's better than other options, some do, in coping with frustration. At least swearing only violates a few state criminal statutes...and are, in retrospect, legally filed as a patronizing effort by the courts, to appease some puritan with clout (thank gods there aren't too many of those around...lmao !!) who is pis*ed off that he isn't able to swear, but really wants to... 'in a bad, way, mommy!!'. I really try not to do it at work, (try and try) which is a chore, so I've taken to doing it in French. I believe I am confident, that I'm not violating Ohio Criminal Statutes, by doing so. Also, I've learned that some people saying 'Jesus Christ !!!' in church, seems to work well, for them...If the shoe fits...I don't know..I'm not longer a practicing Catholic...but when I was..I used 'worse', lol !! But, if I'm trying to get to work in five minutes, and it takes an average of 30, and everyone behind the wheel, is over the age of 80, and conveniently going downtown, that morning....I could go down in history for swearing, and actually screaming outloud, in my car. I would abuse my car horn, if I could, but it's too 'stiff' for me to push down on it, since it's a newer SUV, created for some buff guy, and not my scrawny, tiny self. Actually, I was talking about wakes, funerals, and such, on another post on here. I want someone to mention how I swore like a 'sailor', during my 'service'. At least everyone will know how 'alive' I was, in my passionate state ! Nova Deeperblue 06-10-05, 09:13 PM yes, I hear what you are saying about cursing out loud, but you haven't been in my neighborhood lately, come to think of it, you probably haven't been to NJ, either. We have a stricter code of conduct in this area *big grin* And I am known to follow the rules *another very big grin* but alas, I am moving shortly anyway, and so my cursing to myself will be a mere memory in the ears of those people. I do worry that this reputation which I have establised will follow me and I will the curse that day that I cursed... Christiana 06-12-05, 05:22 PM I am a DEVOTE self-talker, LOL!! there are alot more of us out there than people think. I've talked to myself ever since i can remember - i used to play out sides of conversations on the way to school (walked about 30 minutes) and quite a lot i'd actually act out different people when i was playing by myself in the backyard or in my room... and it wasn't from lack of playmates either! I have 4 younger brothers and a sister...! I don't act stuff out anymore of course, but i definatley still talk to myself all the time. In high school i'd practice conversations i wanted to have with people (most of them i never actually did say to the other person though - stuff like being angry with a teacher, stuff like that) once i even "wrote a book" in my head by talking out the different chapters everyday on the way to/from school. I think i just did it becuaxe i was bored - but you'd never guess it: the "book" was about "perfect lawn care" - talk about the most boring of all topics, lol!!!! anyway i definately think out loud - i think it's perfectly natural even though not everybody does it. earlier this year though my roommate heard me practicing an interview in teh shower, (not quietly at all) and she asked me (very timidly) if everything was ok... lol!!! She didn't realize how much i talked to myself since normally she's not there when i do it. (it comes out most when i'm alone) i almost always talk out both sides o fthe conversation too - and the funniest thing is i don't even always notice that i'm doing it!! i think it happens most when i'm walking places by myself, and then suddenly i'll realize there's other people around and get all quiet... lol it's nothing to be ashamed of - and you people out there who've "never" talked to yourself except for "a word every once in a while when you stub your toe" - why are you denying yourselves the pleasure? lol ProcrastN8R 06-13-05, 01:39 AM I've talked to myself ever since i can remember - i used to play out sides of conversations on the way to school ..... and quite a lot i'd actually act out different people when i was playing by myself in the backyard or in my room... I did it alot as a child. I remember dad getting onto me once for it. I think my parents thought something was really wrong with me. I was adopted as a baby and I was just so different from the rest of the family. speedo 06-13-05, 07:14 PM I do that a bit. I always did. Me :D |
