Ok, so I applied for Unemployment a few weeks ago when I got fired from my job I had been with for over a year. Fired because of my ADD and my inability to learn new things.

So anyway, I was approved for it, got my first check last week, and got a new job the next day. That job lasted less than a week, and I overheard the managers talking about "letting me go" since I couldn't catch on-story of my life! So I quit before they could fire me.

Naturally, when I tried to call in my weekly earnings this morning to the Unemployment Office, the nice automated voice said to come in the office to discuss my claim. I had panicked calling it in, pushed the wrong buttons once, had to hang up and call them back-got further, but they wanted to know how much money I had made working there the week I was there, in dollars and cents. I had no idea, and didn't want to hang up again,so I just made a guess and hung up. Wrong thing to do of course, but I panicked, put on short notice.

So I went in the office and spent almost 4 hours there-3 in the waiting room, and another hour being GRILLED in detail about the exact dates I worked at the new job I had quit, exactly how much I was being paid, and exactly what they told me as far as my job, how far I had to drive, how long it took me to get there, etc. etc.

My memory is USELESS at best, and under scrutiny like that, I go totally blank and look like a complete idiot. The guy was right in my face too, grilling me and looking at me like I was a total idiot.

I kept saying "I don't know. " I don't know. I don't remember exactly. And things of that sort, because I DIDN'T remember! He asked when my last day there was, and I didn't know that either-if I had worked yesterday, I wouldn't have remembered, thats' how bad my memory really is!

I was humiliated, and trying so hard to appear like I had some sense.

Finally I gave up and told him "Look-I have ADD and LEARNING PROBLEMS, and my short term memory is NONEXISTANT!" He just looked at me like he thought I was lying, and kept grilling me.

I know I probably got the dates off, so when he finds that out, if I did, then he'll really think I'm stupid.

I hate this darn ADD-I'm NOT an idiot, my brain just doesn't want to work the right way!!

Just had to vent ya'll-thanks for listening! lol :o:foot:

MP, You are NOT alone at all!
I think that's why I'm on anti-anxiety meds! Just reading your post freaked me out!

Now, don't you wish your short and long tem memory would FORGET that whole experience? (Isn't that weird how that works? That you'll probably remember that 4 hours of crap but not remember some of the great stuff that happened the same day?)

What a great way to look at it! Yeah, that is about true-if you aren't saying what they want to hear, then no one listens! I like that saying! lol

I've never gone through the process, but is there any way you could apply for Disability? (I know many people do this because of depression, and as ADD is a legitimate learning disability I'm sure it's been done for ADD too.) I'm not trying to pretend I know what I'm talking about -- I'm sure others here could fill in some of the details.

Just seems to me that with Disability they're probably more used to dealing with folks with documented barriers to working (and I'm sure it'd be in your interest to get your ADD documented, if it's not).... But I'm really quite ignorant of the topic, just brainstorming.

Oh, and one more thought came to mind: even though it may come difficult to you, it's probably worth buying a $5 pocket calendar at Staples or wherever and writing down your start and end dates. Then there's no tempation to feel stupid -- just check your calendar and you look super-organized! Easier said then done, I grant you.

Well, I'm in the process of filing for SSI Disability now. I have a phone appointment with them on June 10th. I was on it before, years ago, because they tested me for learning problems due to my ADD, and they finally pronounced me "severely disabled" LOL! I was on it for a year, and FORGOT to mail in my husband's earnings, so they canceled me and supposedly sued me for $5000, which I have not paid a penny of, unless it came out of my taxes, which I'm sure it did. Haven't heard anything else about it though. Hopefully it won't take so long to get on it again-it's not like my memory has gotten any better! haha
