Okay guys,
In the hunting thread I kind of hijacked it with an equipment question.

I'm looking for the best all around rifle for deer, pig and elk.

I've see that the .30-06 and the .270 are the odds on favorites.
But the 300 win mag is in there too (isn't that sort of a big un?)

Also DH mentioned a 16 gauge for all around wing shooting. Which I would agree with if I did more upland hunting. But I tend to do geese and ducks (with some pheasant and chukar thrown in) so I stick with 12 guages.

So what would should drive the decision on the .270? Is it just a better round in terms of distance and accuracy? The .30-06 is the caliber that won the west... and there seems to be lots of loads available for it.

Help a bruttha out.

Thanks.

For the game you listed a .270 would work fine. It is a accurate, high velocity round that does'nt kick too much. The .30-06 fires a larger grain bullet with more muzzle energy, is accurate, and you could hunt bigger game with it, but has more kick than a .270 would. The .300 win mag would allow you to hunt anything in the northern hemisphere (including brown bear) but kicks like a mule and useing that on a deer is almost overkill. Capt Kylos:)
