View Full Version : Did your doctor actually say you have ADHD?

I went to the doctor the other day, and asked about ADHD, as I feel I have been struggling. He asked me questions and told me a bit about it, and eventually prescribed me a trail dose of adderall (10 mg).

He never actually said " You have ADHD" I am assuming he wouldn't have prescribed me medication if he didn't think I needed it, but I was just wondering if that even counts as a diagnosis.

I am supposed to go back there in 2 weeks to talk about how the medication worked and any side effects ( No side effects... Kind of no effects at all. I am doing this instead of homework right now, and it has been an hour since I took the pill).

I was just curious.

That's one of the tricky parts for me. Adderall doesn't make you 'positively' active mentally, it makes you active. I find it easy to get side-tracked on things like forums, emails, etc. It's up to you, to direct that focus on where it's needed. Adderall is meant to supplement your life, not a total fix all. In my case, I wasn't raised to have good study habits (parent's were side-tracked onto their own issues for the most part). So I have a combination of ADD and poor focus skills.

Makes me wonder where the ADD forum would be without medication, lol.

Same here. He asked me questions then said "I believe you, I will help you," then told me ADD people are usually very intelligent but lack the ability to follow through. So I think he dx'd me but never said "you have ADD." I got 10mg adderall too, and it helped me tremendously, mostly with my anxieties and the blues, but I think a lot has to do with the validation, too.

My first psychiatrist - I don't remember. I do remember being sent home with a brochure packet about ADHD and Vyvanse, lol.

My second psychiatrist (who re-evaluated me) did tell me during the appointment.

My mom is my doctor and she never toold me she just gave me a pill and said it would help. I was 9 years old then and I did not suspect I had ADD for a year or so and I would not know for sure unless I researched my medication.

Yes, he said he was diagnosing me with ADHD, and the specific subtype (back when the DSM-IV was all the rage), and also that my degree of impairment was “severe.”

Well I've had several docs say that I font have adhd and several others that I definitely do have it.

I think if your doc didn't think you have adhd he probably wouldn't have prescribed stimulants. BUT why not just call and ask him or ask him st the next appointment
