Hello,

I am 37 year old male and I was just diagnosed with ADHD. I am going to the doctor this week to discuss medication. The doctor is an internist and I dont think he specializes in ADHD. Unfortunately, the person who did the diagnosis cannot prescribe medicine. To be honest I am pretty nervous as I have no idea what questions to ask and I will have no idea if the doctor knows what he is doing.

Is there anything that I need to know going into the appointment and what questions are important for me to ask? Do I simply let him prescribe the drug he chooses or should I request a specific drug? How do I deal with a doctor that doesnt specialize in ADHD?

Also, how powerful are the drugs? Can they result in a big improvement in focus? I need more than a little help. lol. There are times when I am completely incapable of focusing no matter how hard I try (or even capable of sitting still).

Thanks!

David

The RIGHT meds can help immensely. The trouble is that you either get lucky and find the right med on the first shot or you do a lot of trial and error to see what works.

There are TWO things you should do before going to the doctor.

1. go to www.brainplace.com and take the 100 question evaluation that helps narrow down which type of ADD you MAY have.

2. Pickup a copy the book "Delivered from Distraction" and read the section that tells you what to ask the doctor. (even if you just check it out of the library or flip through it in a book store. ) Also, there is a chapter, I think #1, that is written with KEY information for those of us who can't actually make it through an entire book.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

It sounds like you got your diagnosis from a psychologist or other mental health professional. I think what I would do is bring a copy of the assessment report with you to the doc's office to show him in case he's skeptical or may think you are "drug seeking," looking for amphetamines or something. I would write down any questions you have just to make sure you do bring them up. I know the pressure of a doc appointment can make me forget stuff just like that.

Some questions you might ask are:

Have you ever treated anyone for ADD before? Any adults? (This is a fair question, I think, and your doctor should definitely not be offended that you ask it!)

What are the common side effects?

Are there any side effects I should call you about immediately?

How can I avoid the side effects?

Are there any long term risks associated with this medication?

When do you want to see me again?

And any others you might want to ask.
