Why is it that schools have special education programs for problem kids, low IQ kids, troubled kids, disabled kids, ethnic kids and mentally retarded kids. But when you have an ADD kid - THEY SAY HE IS TOO SMART FOR SPECIAL ED.
It make me so fricking angry!!!
Just had to blow off some steam... I'm so ticked off right now I can't believe it.

So how are feeling about it now?
I'm curious if ADD kids need special education or just the tools (medication, privacy during tests, etc) to help them focus and function well in mainstream classrooms.
What about your child (you have daughters, yes?) makes you believe so strongly s/he needs special education? How do you think it will benefit her?
My tone, because I'm sure it's difficult to decipher, is one of curiosity and needed feedback. I'm not getting in your face against what you think is best for your child. It's a simple matter of conversation and a desire to understand where you're coming from.
I was diagnosed at a very young age,age 5 and i was in special classes all my lifew but the reason for me to be in specail classes was so i could have more one on one because i struggled so bad in large classes. There is many reasons for special classes but its gettting worse its more for troubled children from what i can see and i totally disagree but we all have our own opinion.
In my opinion, it is probably not a good thing to stick a bright kid in a class designed for low-iq kids.
An ADD child is probably better off in a class with exceptionally bright kids where he/she will be challengerd enough to stay a bit more focused on what is going on, and in a smaller class where he/she will be less likely to be overwhelmed by distractions.
Yes, I get the impression that the educational system does not know how to handle add kids very well, other than medicating them to the point that they fit in. This too, is a bad thing... but on the other hand, some kids have sufficient difficulty with add that they need the medication...
I find lipz's response to be interesting. She commented that she liked having more one-on-one contact with the teacher. In my opinion, this is a good thing for any child, not just the add child.
Now, if we can get the government to spend more money on education , and less money on war, we may be onto something good.
just my two-cents worth..

I totally agree with you that about more then just add kids need more one on one time,i meant im sorry i wasnt clear that i could NOT work in a large classroom,i failed grade 1 and grade 5 due to this reason i could not concentrate with a lot of noise around me as i still can not as many of us probally can not.

Has your child been thru the full eval testing thru the school system? Mental, physical, accademic, social? If not give a written request to the school administration. Koda was and is definatly above average instead of putting him in a special ed class for kids that were slower they assigned a student teacher to sit with him during class time since he generally works two or three grades above his level.
Your kid has rights unfortunatly sometimes we have to fight for them. :faint:
