Hi All,

I am starting a new part time job Monday. I'm already bugging. I took a job as a part time Cad Drafter. It's really below my skill level but it's the only well paying part time job that I can find. My problem is about how I'm going to handle the boredom. Even for only four hours.

The only job I ever had that I didn't find boring was as a Tool and Die Maker. After twenty years in the business I decided to become a Cad (computer assisted design) Draftsman. I loved it. I used to work 9 hour days, five days a week. And then about 4 years ago I got laid off from my job and my father died.

I'm 54 years old and I went into a mid-life crisis, became severly depressed, and started medication for adult ADD. Also, I decided that I hated cad drafting. I was planning to get back into it after my unemployment ran out. It ran out three years ago. I have been stalling and stalling going back to work because I can't come up with any type of work that I don't find boring.

I don't feel like getting back into tool making and working with all the close tolerances that the job requires.

I took an online career evaluation test and the results came back that I should get a job as a Cad Drafter.

So, that's where I'm at. Bored, bored and more bored with everything.

Thanks

EBJ

Good luck!

In the classic disclose/not-disclose dilemma (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16618), where do you fall? I ask because, if you're afraid that you'll "hit the wall" fairly quickly, it might be good to have them know why your motivation suddenly plummets so they can be patient with you as you work through it. Also, I would suspect it would be good for you (it always is for me) to have your performance measured in clear, tangible terms -- even the most boring work gets more exciting when you're racing to meet quota.

Anyway, good luck keeping this job until you find a more stimulating job/career.

What kind of medication are you on? If the medication is working correctly, you should be able to do boring, repetitive tasks without becoming insanely bored. Maybe you could talk to your doctor and look into the possibility of taking another type of medication? Also, try asking yourself why you wanted to be a Cad Draftsman in the first place. That might put things into perspective in terms of how your preferences have changed.

Hi,

I take 40 mg of Ritalin and 2 mg of xanax before I leave for work. For the first day (4 hours) I did mostly typing information into drawings for the first day. It was a killer. I was given a couple of drawings to draw over today so it was a lot better. If I get a mixture like that I don't think it will be too bad.
