View Full Version : ADD Forum Guidelines, REQUIRED READING BEFORE USING FORUMS!
The Resistance! 06-05-05, 12:42 AM Knowing adhd as I do, I am curious if any single person here read this:
"ADD Forum Guidelines, REQUIRED READING BEFORE USING FORUMS! (announcement.php?f=70&announcementid=64)"
Before using the forums?
stori813 06-05-05, 03:11 AM Yes I read it.
Did I remember most of it? No
Did I have to reread it? Yes
The Resistance, you missed out: "www.addforums.com/forums" in the url :D
In it's full length it is: http://www.addforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=75&announcementid=64
I read the forum rules around the time I joined to make sure I didn't break any of them,I have been using forums since 2000 so i'm used to the process,
most forums have the same basic rules base-some require more rules than the basics, others might not even have any,so it is easier to get used to for those who have used forums for a long time.
I read it when I became a mod here. I don't find it too tough to figure out what's accpetable and what isn't so I"ve never taken that type of document as mandatory. I know when I'm being a doggy doo.
Cheers!
Nucking_Futs 06-05-05, 07:06 PM Like Ian I read them after becoming a moderator.
I think that most member's follow the basic guideline of treat others as you would want to be treated. :D
Well I read it
Several times
Do I remember it
I can't even find it
I read it but then it had links...and I clicked on the links and it was like a visual "blah blah blah". Way too much uninteresting information.
If you are going to have rules, it's important to keep the number down to 1/2 dozen or less and use simple, concise, and as LITTLE language as possible to get the necessary points across.
I clicked on it, i actually remember doing that, but something else must have happened, because i am quite sure that i didnt read it.
I will try again right now... or no, i'll wait until after work...
I'm a moderator here as well and I have read it several times..*just for referrance*:D .....and I understand em, just by watching it being broken by others LOL!*adjust halo* ....absoulutly :) :o
I read them when i became a moderator...
Like Garry, do i remember them....  nahhhh
I am not a doggy poo like Ian...
I am DA BRat :p
I learn the hard way, usually. I never read the 'manual', prior to doing anything- until I get 'stuck'...and even then, my eyes skim over the text so fast, it's only when I get 'stuck' again, that I finally go back and reread it...
It's not the 'rebellious', or 'arrogance' factor at all. It's my haste to post what's driving me nuts on here, before I think of something else.
I'm confident someone will remind me of the 'etiquette', or other important information, though, as needed, lol !!
I'm not great at following the 'chain of command', at work either...and that's in our employee manual. Which I've never read.
But have been told about several times.

A very important idea Nova and Barkley has also made reference to it especially when he talks about school and ADHD. The Hyper and combined types typically do learn things the hard way. Talk is cheap with these two types and has little if any impact. So you teachers out there, your lectures with adhd kids are virtually useless. He reccommends tighter monitoring.
So board rules...well, we should expect that adhd people will ignore the rules and some will need to learn things the hard way.
Us SCT types(inattentive) have a better response to reasoning. So if I step over the line you may be able to convince me to change my behaviour. I have matured since grade 6. See report card below. :D
The Resistance! 06-06-05, 11:21 PM When I posted this I was pretty sure that everyone would say no, I didn't read them. Poll is pretty close as I write.
Maybe this is a guy thing, it is similar to asking for directions.I DO ask for directions, I just usually don't read them.
Nucking_Futs 06-06-05, 11:26 PM We do actually have members that read the guidelines and I'm impressed that they make it thru and remember them. I once was reported by a member for posting a religious topic in the Meditation section, it was like the members first or second post at first I was confused and then I thought Cool!!!! their reading the guidelines and helping enforce them. Take a team to keep a healthy, thriving, supportive community going strong.
What the heck does this one section mean, anyways?
I edit my posts, most of the time, and usually, I end up getting distracted while doing so, and since we are timed (brooooother!), in editing them- I never get the chance to do so.
I only edit them because I'm not being as clear as I intend to, but I would be, if I were to edit my own posts.
So..what does this mean?

And 'who'...is Barkley..and why is he an authority on how to 'lecture' us 'Hyper and combined types' (nameless, 'things' that we are...who obviously need to be 'lectured' and 'monitered'..)
I've had only two professors at my university that have been worth beans. They actually enjoy teaching, more than being dictators. They actually have lives, beyond the classroom, and are happy in them, more than defining themselves 'only' as 'lecturers', but as complex, multifaceted individuals, who have much insight to offer, than the $389 used textbook, I am forced to buy four times every three months...ever manages to offer..
And they are FLEXIBLE, in their teaching methods. Which is the opposite of RIGID, going by a hurried agenda, which isn't created to benefit anyone, other than the university's CEO.
I think all teachers would benefit to learn from their students, as far as student needs, especially us 'so called belligerant and unmanageable ADHDers' (please...), since at a college level, we actually 'pay' for the professors to EDUCATE us, not humor, disregard, or (not that this would ever happen in my lifetime..) berate 'us' for not having the same mindset as they.
You shouldn't worry about your ego, if you are a qualified 'teacher', on any academic level. And you should actually enjoy teaching, to the degree, that the student feels your enthusiasm.
But then again..most jobs become mundane, for most people, as much as they don't think they are behaving in a way, that reflects that...
Let's see...51 years old...hates being stuck at that specific college...hates his wife...really wished he would've been a bass player, as he had wanted to be...once....a million years ago..but it's ok...he ONLY has about four more years to retirement...and then he can start 'living'...
In the meantime..some of us 'students' -who are over 35, thank you, are left with tons of nonqualified 'boys and girls' (referring to immaturity level, not age), who think they are going to teach us something, when we got 'squat' for our 'money'.
I can buy any one of those books, that I'm forced to, anytime, and either learn the material in a more profound way, in a way I need to do, or throw the book out, and learn the subject from another source.
The few teachers that I've mentioned will always, always, remain as 'bright stars' in my mind..Because they were actually 'Teachers'.
My focus-ability is defined by what is interesting.
If someone is not interesting, and teaching a subject that they are not even interested in, what makes anyone think us 'Hyper and ...' what did you call us...??? Oh yes, 'Hyper and Combined 'types' ' will show interest?
I'm just so glad that I had one person in my life, growing up, that saw 'adults', as the megnomaniacal beings that they truly were, at St Thomas Moore's elementary school, I had to miserably endure for about five years.
SHE was the one who helped me, understand things, in the way that I needed to. And she was the one who let those 'teachers' have it, each and every time, when I had to be punished, for their unhappiness, in life, in being stuck doing something they resented. My high IQ was always 'there'...since day one. They just were unable to accomodate it...
And I find it ironic, when I would go back home, and go back to that school, to find out that they actually thought they 'taught' me anything...and were involved, in my academic achievements, or job proficiency.
No rant...just reminding 'teachers', as you did, as to what is 'important'...

garykelly 06-16-08, 03:41 PM I put yes, but I'm thinking that, in the AD/HD world, skimming over it counts as reading.
