All photographs made with a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 lens.

I love the rendering, the depth of field control, the ability to vacuum photons in what would otherwise seem near darkness, what those things can do for portraiture...

Enjoy,
Ian

lol that little 3.75 inch long, 4.25 pound lens is worth more than the car I drive around in!

I'm hoping to get out my (old) canon rebel xsi (with a few cheap (canon) lenses, a pretty nice manfroto tripod + bogen head, and a nice canon 430ex-II flash) this summer and maybe get back into a bit of photography.

What kind of equipment do you have Aeon? I think you've shared this before, but I don't remember.

Well, it's not that heavy, maybe 24oz., which is still a beast, but it has a lot of glass.

I intend to buy a Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 soon...which is the manual focus version of that lens, made from March 1980 until some time in 1986. It is 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the modern EF autofocus version...so still a pretty penny all things considered.

What kind of equipment do you have Aeon? I think you've shared this before, but I don't remember.

Just a Canon EOS M camera, and the EF-M 22mm f/2 lens.

So putting the 85mm on there will be silly and unbalanced, but I know what I want and why...namely, a focal length equivalent of 135mm, selective depth of field control, beautiful bokeh, deep saturation, and the ability to take pictures in near darkness...because I love subject isolation, the use of natural light, and the style of rendering it delivers.

Cheers,
Ian

Beautiful!
Man I miss window shopping for new lenses and equipment.

Just a Canon EOS M camera, and the EF-M 22mm f/2 lens.Omg I LOVE the M series. It's such a slick looking camera...have had my eyes on one for a couple of years now. I had the opportunity to pick up one in white with the 22mm lens and the 90ex flash (new) for about $250 a couple of years ago...and I've kicked myself ever since for not doing so :(.

I know it's got some slow auto focus issues...but I'm still in love with the camera. lol truth be told I mainly love it just because of the way it looks. It's so compact and tight and just gorgeous!

Alas...my old xsi is more camera than I could possibly ever need for my noob needs heh.
Still...the eos m series tugs at my heart (especially the far too pricey for my budget m3).

haha thanks for sparking my interest in camera gear again :D I need to dig out my old kit and start playing around again. Photography can be so soul filling.

Some seriously great work there Ian ......that is the kind of stuff I was trained in .....I went to an Ivory Tower school ......and I also only worked in B & W, film, that I developed and printed in my own darkroom ( I had a 4x5 Bessler enlarger, ) ....shot 35, 2 1/4, and 4x5, ....while light is light, light on film behaves very differently on B & W film than on color film ...and there's that difference between print film and slide film ....

....One of the biggest problems i have with product photography is that I am all about available light ......and I used 2475, Record Rapid, which you could push to 6400 ASA, and get the coolest results you can imagine ....massive grain, perfect for portraits, I loved it ...oh yah ....light would explode on brightly lit areas of a photo, like the reflection on a mike stand for stage shots of bands and stuff .....

.....My fav of all those is "Out With Friends" .....that just tugs at my heart, reminds me of so many days and nights of my wild and crazy youth .....( I was a wild child) ....

Available light, from the window, Rembrant lighting ....( 3/4 face, light on short side, with triangle of light under the close eye .....I was so excited when I saw this in the darkroom, I kept it on top of the stack to rinse all through that darkroom session ( which often went on for 8 hours or more )

this last one is a shot I took at a gig up in Guerneville, ordinarily, those glasses will be full of reflections, but good ole 2475, I could just spot those glares out and you can see hi eyes ....great stuff, and looks fabulous in newspapers too, check out the light on the mike stand

I really was the best at landscapes I think .....2 of my favorites of all time ....the first taken from the highway leading into the Sonoma Valley, ( there's a famous race track on the other side of that hill, used to be called Sears Point, don't know what it's called now) and second, is the valley taken from one of the foothills of Sonoma Mountain, at the southern end of the valley

<a href="http://s760.photobucket.com/user/sallyshoaf/media/Sears%20Point_zpsmgnduasb.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx244/sallyshoaf/Sears%20Point_zpsmgnduasb.png" border="0" alt=" photo Sears Point_zpsmgnduasb.png"/></a>

this one is my first ever successful landscape ....

All of these photos started life a lot sharper, but these are taken from scanned photo to DeviantArt, then copied to my computer, and from my computer to photobucket, then from photobucket to here, and they do lose a bit in the translation going through 4 different sites .....

<a href="http://s760.photobucket.com/user/sallyshoaf/media/Sonoma%201_zpsskzxu5gu.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx244/sallyshoaf/Sonoma%201_zpsskzxu5gu.png" border="0" alt=" photo Sonoma 1_zpsskzxu5gu.png"/></a>

...finally just for fun ....I took this photo of my beloved friend George Kindler, ...it was terrible, so I took the photo and copied that ....then copied that copy , and copied that copy, and copied THAT copy on out to about 7 generations ....and ended up with this ....Oh and this is a photo taken at a gig, usual highly contrasty lighting.....

<a href="http://s760.photobucket.com/user/sallyshoaf/media/George_zpsfs75thlh.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i760.photobucket.com/albums/xx244/sallyshoaf/George_zpsfs75thlh.png" border="0" alt=" photo George_zpsfs75thlh.png"/></a>

Agreed, but that might vary depending on how you define quality, and for sure, all other things being equal, give me good glass. ;)

I like the photos of salleh more than the nuclear canon colors which
look to me like royalty free stock photos.

Appreciated, and such is your taste.

That said, I will say that I have had the pleasure of trying this lens, and one of the things it is optimized for is color saturation - but as it concerns these photos, who can say what has been post-processed, and in what way.

Also, those photos looking like stock images, well, certainly that is in part me because I chose them. So too is it true that the lens in question was designed to have a certain look, and one suitable for commercial applications, in fashion in particular. So perhaps after 41 years it has come to define a look and style that is known, albeit one without name.

In all that time, no other company has made an 85mm with an equivalent aperture...in this regard, it stands alone, for better or for worse.

Cheers,
Ian
