View Full Version : So I won a rifle...
motorbrain 06-08-05, 03:24 AM Went to a DU dinner and won a Win 70 Super Shadow 7wsm. :D
I don't know diddly about it but I think that I can use it from pigs to deer. An advice from the rifle gurus? Thanks in advance.
Guess I have to make some room in the gun safe - the boy got a BB gun too!

DaveHawk 06-08-05, 07:46 AM Congradulations! I don't know squat about modren rifles.
Gourmet 06-08-05, 08:04 AM Hi.
What is DU?
Is that ducks unlimited by any chance?
Do they do pigs and deer now?
Are they still sponsoring an artist to paint for a limited edition print?
always full of questions.........

Gourmet 06-08-05, 08:44 AM sorry...Motorbrain, congrats on winning your gun:D

Congrats on your winnings. I was so glad to see that your going to be keeping it and the BB gun in a safe so many senseless mistakes have cost too many children their lives.
Our son has a BB gun, we bought it to help reinforce gun safety and to ensure ourselves he was ready for the real deal. His first trip out he went phaesant hunting with his dad and accidently shot his uncle in the back we knew right off the bat we had our work cut out for us with his impulsiveness. He has come a long way and is now ready to try for his first deer next season.
We keep his BB gun in the gun cabinet; because, kids are naughty. Our neighbor boy has no restrictions on when or how he plays with his BB gun and one day I happened to see a group of young children running down the street and wondered WTF thats when I noticed him standing on the corner pumping his gun getting ready for another shot. I took the gun away from him and took it to his father at work who laughed and said boys will be boys. And I informed him that the next time I saw his boy being a boy without parental supervision I was going to be a mother being a mother and stick that gun in the fathers most unpleasant place. I've seen the boy outside twice with his BB gun, father following closely behind.
motorbrain 06-08-05, 08:50 PM Thanks all!
Looking forward to taking it deer hunting. I think it might be a little much for boar but I have to check what loads are available for it.
Gourmet,
On the question of DU. Yep, they work with an artist/s every year to create posters as well as give out artist of the year awards. I'm considering doing a painting or two for the local competion here in CA for our local duck association. I can honestly say I haven't painted in years so I don't expect to win - but it's nice to paint for a purpose. And I like ducks!
As to when my son is going to be old enough to shoot the BB gun? I may wait awhile.
But I'm sure I'll hear about every ten minutes. I figure if he can guess the safe combination on the first try I'll take him out and we'll shoot it together.
Otherwise - he's on my schedule. ;)
Futs, when I was a kid we had one boy on the block that refused to die when we played army. You could poke a stick up his nose and say "bang" and he say "Missed MMEEE!". We hated that - although otherwise he was a pretty good kid.
So we all grabbed our father's welding masks, bell helmets and then put on a bunch of shirts & pants... see where this is going?
After that, playing army was a full contact sport. BB guns, pellet guns and wrist rockets. Any one that got a mark was dead.
Hurt like heck, was one of the dumber thing we did (repeatedly) but was fun like you wouldn't believe. 5 pumps left a good welt. 10 pumps would break skin.
I'm a firm believer in eye protection! And there is no way I'm letting my kid get away with half the stuff that i did...
MB
Nucking_Futs 06-08-05, 09:04 PM Doug and I don't let our kids get away with half of what we did either. If I had known then what I know now I would not have half my scars nor would I have the ulcer I have now due to ummm partaking of the beverage in college. (grins)
Nowadays, its paint guns. My son so wants one and I've been considering it I think I'll go with my sister's way of seeing if he is ready. She dressed her boys in the protective gear and everyone got a body shot if the kid didn't cry or whine then she would start the expensive process of buying the protective gear and the paint ball gun. Anything above the shoulders means you lose your gun for two weeks. Her kids are avid and play in a neighbors field outside their home. And honestly I kinda want to play!!!!!!
motorbrain 06-08-05, 09:14 PM Paintball! The sport of kings! :D
Lots of folks out here play it - and there are courses throughout CA. I look at the price of the equipment and think --- I could get a really nice new shotty for that!
I like the test! No snivelers allowed in paintball! You should give it a try. If you get hit in a flesh spot (like the back of a calf) expect a bruise though.
It's pretty fun. Way more than Laser tag.

Nucking_Futs 06-08-05, 09:19 PM Yes, only one problem I think I may be a sniveler or worse yet I'm a hormonal woman (typing in the wrong section I know but I was highly impressed by your gun cabinet idea-smart thinking). As a hormonal woman anyone who had not made my day in the last two weeks would be in for a world of hurt whether they be child or hubby, it could get very ugly before they finally get the National Guard in to pry my weapon from my firm and angry grasp. lmbo
motorbrain 06-08-05, 09:37 PM Remind me never to poke a stick up your nose and say "Bang!"... :p
My guess is that a welding mask wouldn't save me...!
Nucking_Futs 06-08-05, 09:43 PM Your most likely right but I promise to be nice and only shoot below the belt. *grins*
You know I would not invade the mens section so often if ya'll weren't so much fun. Our of curiosity is it offensive I try to limit my input to the less meaty threads like this one and if I should accidently read a meatier topic I keep my communications and support to the pms system. Basically, I'm asking am I offensive and if so please be honest and I will behave nicely.
Hugs
motorbrain 06-08-05, 09:57 PM I have three older sisters and am the only boy. There is nothing a woman can do that can offend me!
:)
I was well trained!
Nucking_Futs 06-08-05, 10:43 PM lol with four brothers and six sisters I learned to be quick enough on my feet that there is little men can do to offend me so we're good.

That is so cooL!
I know a man/legend artist who has won the poster contest more than once from my county. He's probably in his mid 70's now, but is still doing some teaching. Still painting ducks :) The poster competition helped launch his career quite a bit.
I am fortunate enough to own one of his more "modern" pieces. I's beautiful....and I am not much of a duck person.......unless they still go "quack quack". ;)
GO PAINT

Ichpuchtli 06-09-05, 07:18 AM I wish I could get a Ball baring Gun but they must be vewry hard to find or illeagal in Australia. It would love to use up the striphome boxes in a more usefull.

All my ducks go " Quack Quack" but then I go "Bang Bang!" quickly followed by "Missed again!!! Dang it!"...
:)
Gourmet 06-11-05, 04:22 PM Then maybe you should get all your ducks in a row ;)
Wanna hear my duck story?
I slept with a duck.
Two actually.
When I was ten I got two baby chicks in my Easter basket....pinky and mr. green jeans...
and two baby ducks......daisy and paddy.
The chicks were adolescents and kind of mean.....green jeans became "mean jeans" and pinky became "stinky".
But the little ducks transfered their love and devotion to me. They followed me everywhere. I would sneak them into my bed at night after my dad would tuck me in.
You've heard of pillow quack, right? :D
(true story)
~gourmet~
motorbrain 06-11-05, 09:25 PM What a great story!
All the ducks I knew as a kid were mean. They were farm ducks and sort of knew their fate... So they would take it out on the kids.
We sure got a lot of exercise running away from them!
I will confess I have never slept with a duck - they just aren't interested in me I guess. :p :D
I know a little about firearms, at least enough to know that a 7wsm is a nasty round and that the Winchester 70SS gets rave reviews in NRA publications. Congrats on winning an excellent rifle.
motorbrain 06-22-05, 02:47 PM I picked up some cartridges. Goodness. They're huge.
Looks like I'm going to have to put in for some deer and elk draws.
Too big for boar?
motorbrain 06-22-05, 02:49 PM Hey Gourmet,
I met a gal that lived in New York City that had a pet duck that she would take for walks on a leash!
I just thought that was cool so I shared...
mb
Gourmet 06-22-05, 07:57 PM That is REALLY cool. I wonder if it had a rhinestone collar.
I don't think that duck could keep up with me.
Don't they kind of waddle when they walk?
I'd be carrying my duck down the sidewalk and probably get tripped up on the leash.:D
Memories...
Yeeeah, I used to kiss those ducklings on the lips too. They had little skinny lips.
I know my parents could hear them. They made a lot of noise...and one more thing. The ducks stayed in a box on the bed....not on my sheets. I would never sleep with duck poop. Just wanted to make that clear.
And then a river rat killed my ducks :(
We lived in the low country near a swampy area. The river rats would come up after the corn we fed the ducks and I guess they had words. It was sad.
Thanks for telling me about the =chick= with the =duck= from NY City.
~gourmet~
motorbrain 06-24-05, 09:41 AM I hate rats. They are creepy and wickedly smart.
I wonder what the goofiest critter would be to take for a walk on a leash?
Hamsters?
Starfish?
Hmm.
Nucking_Futs 06-25-05, 07:09 AM I owned a pet fly once
Honest to goodness
When I was younger we would catch flies and tie a piece of our hair around it and walk it from class to class. *rolls eyes* the things an ADHD kid will come up with for entertainment.
Gourmet 06-25-05, 11:38 PM Dragon flies with sewing thread :) Futz :D lol
Flies crawl on dog poo....did you know that?
Tweetsie Railroad and Fred Kirby......MB I had a rifle too. Bang bang. Got him.
Pinched my fingers good putting in the caps :(
Red cowgirl hat :) pretty sweet
motorbrain 06-26-05, 01:44 AM Futs & Gourmet,
My word! I always that that leashing bugs was an urban legend.
Although I do remember some character in Pogo taking his butterfly for a walk....
Learn sumpin' new every day!
DaveHawk 07-03-05, 03:10 PM Hey Futs we did the same thing with the locus their a bit bigger and they also work good tied to a fishing hook.
DRANSWORLD 07-03-05, 06:12 PM Thats a pretty cool rifle. Has a Black carbonate stock, and a nice big scope. The type of round fired from it is indeed the 7mm WSM, which was just released in like 2001 i think. Make sure you learn how to clean the barel and bore, which is easy enough. In terms of safety, keep the bullets someplace other than the gun, which should be hidden. And always try and keep the chamber open, so you can see with your eyes to be sure there is no bullet in it. Rifles are pretty easy, and good guns to start with. If you are a born cowboy, youll want a whole hatful of guns in no time!
DRANSWORLD 07-03-05, 06:16 PM HAHA just read about BB gun wars. used to do the same thing about 3 years ago when me and my friends go sick of paintball. We all had scopes and whatnot, and we all had a rule about the amount of FPS (feet per second) the bbs were allowed to go. I have a feeling people used more pumps than they should. CO2 Handguns were the best BB guns to shoot at each other! hehe . Not as dangerous as people might think, especially if you find speciatly plastic BBs that can shoot out of normal BB guns.
