View Full Version : Medications: thinking outside the box

The forum gets a pretty constant stream of questions (and statements) about the pharmacological properties of various medications and supplements.

Those loaded questions and overconfident statements mostly come from people who have dedicated themselves to thinking "outside the box".

Remember that "the box" of established pharmacological knowledge is very large and has a very tricky and unexpected shape. You can't think outside the box unless you get to know the entire box very well first. Most of the time, when people imagine themselves to be thinking outside the box, what they're really doing is taking a wild guess and crossing their fingers.

The more sure you are that your outside-the-box idea is correct, the worse your chances get. Psychopharmacology is never a simple matter, and thinking that your case might be simple was your first mistake.
