Took my son to a sports physical last night and the Nurse Practitioner asked about what the Clonidine I listed was used for. I said first, it's used at night to calm down his brain and allow sleep to take hold and secondly it's used in the morning to calm down his brain and let the ADHD meds take hold.

She said "Really, that is very interesting, I have never heard it used for those things."

My son does very well on it, so no complaints here, but does anyone else use it for either of these reasons or is my kids Doctor trying unconventional things?

Clonidine ER (as Kapvay) has been FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD since 2010.

Prior to that, the drug was formally approved as a blood pressure medication. Even then, it was used for many years off-label for reasons like those you describe -- to help with sleep and to reduce impulsivity and aggression in kids with ADHD. It has also been used to reduce tics.
