I work in tech. Since leaving college 10 years ago, I've had three different jobs. Two were somewhat ADD friendly and I did well at them, however the current one seems to be as ADD-unfriendly as possible.
Basically for me to succeed in a job, I need the following conditions:
1) Need to get excitied enough about a project to motivate me.
2) The project to be important enough to the company that I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.
3) Project needs to be challanging, but achievable
4) Roadblocks get me down, and kill the excitement.. To many of them and I lose all motivation.
5) Need to be empowered enough to make things happen.
So this job has been a nightmare. First on #1, I get crappy projects that seem doomed to fail from the start, and the #2, the people who request them don't seem to really care as they often don't respond to questions. For #4 and #5, I don't feel empowered at all. I need to depend on other people to do something before I can get my work done, and they are invariably slow even when it's a simple task on their part. (Like I just need a certain software CD from the software keeper- takes days to get it!)
They lack of me being able to complete anything has really gotten me down. I don't know if I've ever been so miserable. I guess the bright side is that it's finally forced me to get officially diagnosed and treated, so hopefully there's hope.
And the commute just seems to get worse and worse.
I know I should leave, but the one bright spot is the excellent benefits. My wife is pregnant and currently unemployed, and I'm a bit afraid to change jobs since it would force me on a new health plan that might make me or my wife change doctors or cause other hassles when we least need it. I guess I should start looking anyway though.
