View Full Version : Should I mention ADD on a job application
Title says it all. I am currently trying to find a job in the computer field and although I know I can do the job, I am not sure I want to mention I have ADD where it says any known disabilities because I am afraid that it might impact me getting the job. What do you guys think?

As to your question, I don't believe you need to disclose ADHD unless the employer is specifically looking for someone who has ADHD. When my ADHD improves my job performance, I don't credit my ADHD as that wouldn't be fair to other non-ADHD employees. :D

I would not mention unless specifically asked once i was hired. There is no need to know ahead of time. U may not get a job if u disclose, there is virtually no way to prove they took someone else over u just bc of your ADD.
I have recently discussed this type of issue with a few different careers counselors and all of them recommended not disclosing it before getting a job.
I wouldn't advocate discosure, before ascertaining the job is yours. Proceeding a drug test, upon hiring I would disclose medications for ADD/HD already taken, if they are in your system, for even one day.
If you are not on any meds for ADD/HD, I would advocate not disclosing that information, until you are, later on.
The meds will come up in drug testing as a form of 'amphetimines'. That is 'law'.
Your personality traits, which may be in conjunction to having ADD/HD, may or may not, come up after being hired. It depends on your behavioral traits. If you need backup for 'reasonable means of accomodation', pertaining to laws governed by the ADA Federal act, then, you will need to disclose such information, prior to, using them.

As far as the drug test is concerned, that's done by a third party. The third party isn't allowed to disclose what they found to the employer. They're only allowed to say pass fail.
If you're on XR or don't have to worry about this, then why tell them?
LENABENAMARYMAE 07-21-05, 02:59 PM I am having a heck of a problem with finding a job. I have great work experience but I bomb in job interviews. My Career Counselor suggested I tell the interviewer up front about my A.D.H.D. but personally, I think it would be a mistake to tell a prospective employer. What good would it do? Therefore, I will continue NOT to disclose my disorder but I will admit up front that I do not interview well.
Anyone else having problems with job interviewing? Any tips? I lack self-esteem, and I am "to the point", whereas the interviewers are looking for "novels" and I am giving the "Coles notes". Also, I think I am too loud. My EI runs out in 3 weeks, and I am freaking internally.

:eek:Hello everyone. I am new here, been browsing for a few days but this is my first post :D
LENABENAMARYMAE, I have the same problem. I havent been diagnosed with ADD yet but I have all the symptoms and will be going in to the doctors Monday.
Whenever I go into a job interview I get nervous and my mind goes blank. Most times they will ask me a question and I will sit there saying ummm ummm which is not good at all. I get confused very easily as well.
My word of advice. If you know what companies you are applying to, try to study the company history first. Also, say for example you are applying for a telemarketing position, make sure to search the net for questions that may be assked in the interview and how to respond to the questions.
I hope that helps you a bit ;)

Unless, of course your a truckdriver, like me. Then the whole medication thing gets real interesting. I've compensated by getting a job running nights with a real cool boss.

Show your positives not your negatives...and even when cornered in an interview, talk about the postive side of your negatives.
crime_scene 09-10-05, 08:43 PM excellent advice, scuro. I concur.
