View Full Version : Adderall and side effects on genitals! Scary!!
El_Nicko 07-04-05, 08:28 AM My doc recently changed my 'script from Wellbutrin to Adderall. Being a poor college student, I opted for the generic brand (I don't have the bottle in front of me, so I can't say which brand it is). I've been taking two doses of 10 mg a day.
Well, after taking it the first and second day I have noticed an alarming amount of shrinkage of my penis and testicles. It looks like I have been swimming in ice water. Also, there is a faint pain when they are touched. Also there is discoloration.
Needless to say, my sexual partner is not happy. Nor am I. I feel like I need a stimulant to get my college reading/work done throughout the day, so I really don't want to change back to Wellbutrin.
I've read that it may be due to the fact that Adderall is a vascular constrictor, thus making the penile tissue considerably smaller. Will Gingko Biloba help? I've read Gingko dilates blood vessels. Is there another remedy I can use to counteract the side effects?
After reading posts about lowered libido, I am determined to starta daily exercise regimen and supplement with vitamins. Any other suggestions?
wolfie860 07-04-05, 11:53 AM It is only when my penis is flacid. I don't have the pain in my testicles or any discoloration as you mentioned. Howe long have you been on the adderall? Maybe this will go away in time? No problems either with getting or maintaining erections. This seems like such an usual side effect. Also have had tremendous problems with irrtabilty and headaches on the adderal. Have you had those as well? I read somewhere that over time the penis gets smaller can't recall if that was with Adderal or Dexedrine. If this is the case I'll stop the meds immediately! Was hoping to find other med for ADD that won't have these S/E's.
Tried Straterra with poor to no results.
Chadwick 07-04-05, 12:00 PM It's a side effect that tends to diminish with time, and may warrant experimentation with dextroamphetamine since it might be that it's the levoamphetamine that's constricting blood vessels more powerfully than dextroamphetamine.
mctavish23 07-04-05, 02:45 PM Just as an aside, I have learned thru trial and error that whenever possible, I will always try and take brand name over generic meds. The difference is very noticable.
I hope that subsides soon.I understand how tough it is when you're in school.Every penny counts.
I would ask my pharmacist and doc about that.If you just started a med, then changing after so short a time might not be what they would recommend.
I take Wellbutrin SR & Ritalin LA. When I was switched to generic Wellbutrin I ended up "crashing and burning." It basically quit working.
Later on, I experienced the same thing(quit working) with methylphenidate. That led to my current regimine, which seems to be working well.
Good luck.
El_Nicko 07-04-05, 06:53 PM So I found out my generic salts are from Barr! I keep hearing bad things about them?!
I decided to get the generic after reading Gregster's explanation on a previous post (http://www.addforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=162952&postcount=2).
I continued taking the meds today, and it's still the same effect. No pain today, though. But continued discoloration and shrinkage.
I have noticed a tendency to resort to a quick temper... But no headaches. I've been drinking liter after liter of water to prohibit that.
Is it the general opinion then, though, that I should purchase the name brand of Adderall?
How long should I wait to see if the side effects wear off?
*waiting and hoping*
Chadwick 07-04-05, 08:04 PM There is no general opinion with regards to generics. My opinion is that if you don't know you're taking a generic, it'll probably work better for you. I'm of the impression that people over-inflate the differences that may exist and in some cases invent and/or exacerbate them not necessarily on purpose.
The side-effect you're describing is an amphetamine side effect. If you are getting real amphetamine, you will have that effect especially (I say this somewhat tentatively) if it contains levoamphetamine, as does mixed amphetamine salts like Adderall.
For what it's worth, I had zero problems with my Barr labs mixed salts amphetamine. Except of course the penile and testicular . . . tightening. I actually liked the effect, sort of like a penis-lift. Heh.
MillenniumMan 07-07-05, 07:47 PM I heard that too much Adderall can affect the heart, or something like that.
What about the brain can it do anything to the brain??? only more research can tell.
I heard that too much Adderall can affect the heart
So can sex and golf. :D
MillenniumMan 07-08-05, 12:19 AM El Nicko that does seem rather freaky.
that does seem rather freaky.
The golf or the sex?
So can sex and golf. :D
I just got back from my doctor and he said told me the same thing; that we will want to manage the Adderall as it can cause problems with the heart. He adviced me to monitor my heart rate to help me moderate the drug. he said "don't let the positive effects of any medication cause other health problems".
Oh and, I saw no improvement in my gulf game...but sex is better :)
Oh and, I saw no improvement in my gulf game...but sex is better :)
Well, one out of two isn't bad. :D
Moody Blonde 07-08-05, 02:53 PM There was a comedian on Late Night with Conan O'Brien last night talking about this very thing! He said:
"The ADD medicine causes impotence. So, if I take it, I won't have ADD and then I can focus really well on my limp penis!"
Conan was laughing so hard he almost fell over.
Not that it's a laughing matter....
stanzen 07-08-05, 09:47 PM Seriously now: I noticed something similar to what El_Nicko (member.php?u=6841) described after stopping Paxil and continuing on Adderall alone. This went away after a month or two, with no problems now. Funny, the former combo of P and A seemed to have an aphrodesiac quality-- can't say that about Paxil alone.
For that month or two, I was quite happy and content -- my partner was a touch squirrly though.
On second thought, who needs it?
Gets me into endless trouble;
makes my decisions for me -- talk about impulsive! Makes me do and say things propulsively - - how do you spell hyperactivity? Causes my mind to wander endlessly- - Oh, did I mention distractability?
Maybe this is how the ADHD meds really work!
Then again, the shriv-revelations have sure saved me much money on tattoos.
Cheers,
