Alrighty, glad we have an area to discuss our jobs and living with A.D.D. Well I cannot stress enough how organizing things can be a task itself. For 5 months I have been working one of the biggest high stress jobs of my life and being A.D.D makes it worse at times. In the ADD Chatroom I have constantly said I am stressed. Some have some interesting suggestions to handle it and I will not get into that. After all this is moderated and it would not be appropriate.
As a camera man capturing and editing news stories and events for a tv station is rough. Not everyone can do this, but i am adjusting. Heres what i am finding are my biggest stresses.
1.) GETTING THE RIGHT VIDEO
When I am out capturing video and sound for the news, i am always asking myself "is this enough?" due to time constraints and deadlines I am finding it hard to always get enough. This stresses me because i will later have to sit down and edit this all for loyal WBNG viewers who tune into our newscasts and will see what i have got.
2.) BEING IN A DIFFERANT AND NEW AREA
Since moving to a new place, I am finding it stressing that I do not know where court houses, town halls, county buildings and other important things are located. Fortunatly thats why we have maps. Sometimes thats frustrating.
3.) IS IT PRESENTABLE?
When editing I am constantly asking myself is this video long enough? does it tell a story? does it fit the script? was that jump cut?
4.) AM I LAGGING?
Rome was not built in day, i realize that. However in the area of news things happen fast and trying to be quick in case something happens is another stresser. I am also finding when i am rushed i ignore things and make mistakes. Theres times where i am not paying attention cause i am so stressed that I am lagging. For example CBS sends us video for the news. Its my job to edit it. One day i get video of someone pumping gas and it was all raw footage and not even cut. Like all the stuff that comes down from sattelite, its always edited, this wasn't. I feel pretty crappy how i left a constant shot of someone pumping gas for 30 seconds and no change in shots at all. My chief editor was all over me for that slip up. I should have paid attention. Same goes for some video i forgot to cut because i was so caught up in something else that needed to be done.
5.) TECHNOLOGY FAILS
Everynow and then tape machines have issues and do not like you or your video. Cameras have back focus problems and make the images appear hazy like an Elizabeth Taylor comercial. Mics sound like bacon and eggs frying when you interview people. This stresses me because i am concerned about quality and sometimes your equipment is your friend or enemy. Dealing with this makes things harder and frustrating. If you heard me in Owego videotaping a farm and sounding like a truck driver or someone in the ADD Support Room having a bad day, I will tell you why. We are out in the boonies, miles away from the nearest Starbucks, need to be back at the station ASAP and my mic goes bad and theres nothing i can do but just yell and cuss. Its unprofessional and is something I must work on.
So if you see me in the A.D.D room saying I am stressed, I am finding out this is why. Some say grit your teeth, stop whining and deal, thats some great constructive criticism and advice. On the job when situations present to be challenging, you try your best, however when in time crunches and in situations beyond control how can one resond to criticism and be able to make the right calls and keep a level head?
