View Full Version : Inattentive vs SCT do meds work?

I've been doing a little research and turned up information that has me all confused.

I would fall into the inattentive subtype. I see some of the latest ADHD thinking seems to have created a new subtype called 'SCT'. I seem to fit the SCT description well, but here's the confusing part...

They say SCT doesn't respond well to stimulant meds. However other sources say inattentive responds VERY WELL to stimulants. Some seem to suggest adderall is the best for this type.

What to believe? I've been on Ritalin LA and Concerta so far. I've seen some improvement.. Not completely happy with them. I've been thinking about asking my doctor for adderall when I see him this Wednesday.

Any other inattentive types here who fit the SCT profile do well on stimulants?

It really depends on the person not the type of ADHD/ADD you have. You could put a hundred people with the exact same symtoms in a room and probably get just as many different experiences with what has worked for or helped them.

I think it also depends on what your expecting from the meds. You said you tried some and were not happy but did get some improvement. I'm sure you already know this but remember meds are not miracle cures. No medication will make your symptoms disappear completely so if something is helping don't be too quick to get rid of it.

Again not saying you are doing this but have seen people who think meds will make ADD completely go away. They are just setting themselves up to me dissappointed and will prob wind up feeling worse about themselves then they did before starting the med search.

That's what I was kind of hoping. According to the SCT theory, meds don't help the SCT type very much. Maybe the SCT theory is just flawed?

It's the side effects that bother me. The meds make some symptoms go away, but not others. I do see comments from people who seem to get amazing relief from one type of stimulant, but less with others. So I do want to try the adderall to see if they are a huge improvement over what I see now.

Thanks for the response.

SCT is a theoretical construct only at this point.

Can someone explain what SCT is or post a link.

Thanks

For link to SCT do a search on this board. It has been discussed.

Meds do work for SCT just not at the eye popping percentages for the typical ADHD person. I can't quote the percentages off of the top of my head but I believe it helps for about 50% of SCT's. If it's effective for 1 in 2 it's well worth a trial run.

Thx, some of the info I've read makes it sound as though they don't work at all.
