View Full Version : Adderall XR and dehydration.
badders 07-14-05, 04:16 AM i recently switched from regular Adderall to Adderall XR. dosage for both are 30mg/day.
i do regular exercise every week and i have noticed that after i started taking the XR, i sweat much more than before, and then i feel much more dehydrated. my body are all drenched in sweat but my mouth was like i hadn't drank for days. but that's not the case, i made sure i drank a lot, and i drink during exercise. but it seems like water is leaving the body via sweat but it doesn't refill it even if i drink a lot of water.
has anybody noticed something similar?
i do not remember that happening when i was taking regular release.
TheEldest 07-16-05, 09:30 AM I'm also on a 30mg Adderall XR, and boy does it make me sweat. I haven't noticed a problem with my body taking in water that I drink, though. But I'm probably not the best case, as I dislike drinking more than a few sips of water when I workout and I hardly drink more than a couple cups of water a day.
But when I take it, I am more dehydrated, and I'm sweating more. I hate it.
But when I take it, I am more dehydrated
This is illogical.
crankytexan 07-16-05, 03:42 PM That is a side effect of Adderall and it went away for me after a while.
LOL! Thanks crankytexan.
I'm sorry, TheEldest, I thought you were still talking about water!
onemoreyear 07-17-05, 11:54 PM Yeah I just upped from 20 mg XR to 30 mg...
I have *never* had BO but since I started taking 30mg it WONT GO AWAY...No matter how much ******* deodorant I put on! I seriously wave at people from the elbow down. And god forbid I have to shake someone's hand...or HUG someone...
And also, not only does my mouth become incredibly dry, but I spit when I talk!
onemoreyear,
How much water do you drink through the day?
onemoreyear 07-18-05, 12:01 AM 2-3 cups--it's hard for me to drink anymore since my stomach feels like it's about to explode after half a cup...it TOTALLY supresses my appetite, even for water!
I carry a water bottle at work (several colours of stylish little bottles) and sip water all day. I rarely drink a large amount at one time unless I forget to take water with me.
Dehydration is a serious health threat.
Do your hugs = :faint: ? Drink water. :)
onemoreyear 07-18-05, 12:29 AM hehe okay I'll try it...also, dehydration might explain why, the other night, I got up to pee in the middle of the night and my heart stopped beating. I leaned over the countertop and as SOON as I did it started POUNDING.
When you are dehydrated your heart RACES when you change positions. (i.e it increases when you sit up from lying down, and again when you stand from sitting up)...
But this is insane. I think it's dehydration because it was my FIRST day of taking 30mg XR and I took it, didn't drink a thing all day, then had some wine to help me get to sleep before bedtime...SMART!
badders 07-21-05, 02:37 AM i am glad (well, in a way... ;) ) that my reaction to Adderall is "normal". seriously, i thought i completely lost my fitness and endurance level once i switch to the XR. maybe i will adjust my exercise schedule and maybe start the XR earlier to see if it helps.
Dehydration is common with Adderall because it is also a diuretic. Drink more water. It can only do you good. I know it's hard to start, but once you get going it will become a habit. I never drank water. Just Mountian Dew, which is a diuretic too. Now I can drink over 64 ounces between 8am and 6pm. I feel great as well. I am not sluggish anymore. Get a water bottle. Nothing to big. Buy cheap bottled water, take it to work and re-fill it through out the day.
sweetmama 07-21-05, 04:58 PM What are the symptoms of dehydration? Can I still get dehydrated if I drink lots and lots of Diet Dr Pepper?(YUM!)
onemoreyear 07-21-05, 09:34 PM I think the main symptoms are...
puffiness under the eyes
dry mouth
heart starts pounding when you stand up
spit when you talk
headache
fatigue
stinging eyes
Hyperion 07-24-05, 12:07 AM Can I still get dehydrated if I drink lots and lots of Diet Dr Pepper?(YUM!)
YES. Most definitely yes. First off, sugary soft drinks are often useless for hydration, and second, if Dr. Pepper contains caffeine, and I honestly cannot remember if it does, then this will only make you more dehydrated, not less.
If you are drinking large amounts of water, please please please either drink sports drinks like Gatorade or at least eat something salty like crackers. Drinking large amounts of water without taking in adequate amounts of salt can lead to a dangerous condition called hyponaetremia, which can be fatal. It is well known that other amphetamines like MDMA can make hyponaetremia more likely due to their interactions with the anti-diuretic hormone vasopressin. I do not know whether Adderall would have a similar effect, but it is quite likely. This is not an issue with having a glass of water, but someone mentioned drinking 64 ounces, or half a gallon of water, and at this level, it becomes a reasonable concern.
Oh, and as for the person who mentioned Mountain Dew: This is an extremely bad idea. Not only will it make the dehydration much worse, but mixing amphetamines and caffeine is not a very good idea.

I talk about that in this post: http://www.addforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17368&highlight=electrolytes

Hey Badders!,
When you say you are worried about your fitness level do you mean overall, or just the dehydration thing?
How long were you on the regular before you switched to XR?
I am an avid worker outer as well...
I noticed a few strange things as well.
I think the dehydration from Adderall is very real, I was told it is the salts.
We moved from the Midwest to Colorado (pre Adderall) a few years back. Everyday by 1:00 or so I felt like crap, crabby, headaches etc. Finally a concerned soul suggested I was dehydrated.
Coming from the Midwest I never really thought about drinking water unless I was thirsty, but as soon as I started drinking more, all the symptoms went away. It was like magic.
So to get to my point; if Adderall is dehydrating you- drink! Being dehydrated feels yucky.
(Bad breath is also a symptom...)
vegansoprano 07-29-05, 10:53 PM I've noticed significant dehydration on Adderall too, but I thought I was crazy cos the paper insert thingy that comes with the script never mentioned anything about that.
I blamed the dehydration on the fact that Adderall seems to make it possible to put off eating and drinking pretty much indefinitely, even when I'm lightheaded from not eating for so long. But then I noticed that even when I felt insanely dehydrated, I was still peeing crazy amounts of very dilute urine.
I'm glad to know that this is at least somewhat normal.
LittlePrincess 07-30-05, 12:06 AM Could it be possible to have a headache *before* having a symptom like thirst, when one is truly dehydrated? I get headaches and feel very tired and slightly dizzy about 5-6 hours after taking Adderall XR 20mg. Is this dehydration too? Or something else?
