View Full Version : Truck Driver?
pittguy578 07-14-05, 11:08 PM This may sound weird, but I am a college graduate that is considering becoming a truck driver. I am tired of the corporate rat race ( I work for a large insurance carrier now), and dealing with stupid administrative tasks..I want freedom and not having to answer to anyone and doing pointless tasks. I actually love driving in a car, the stimulation relaxes me..
I am also concerned about earnings. Truck drivers can make alot more than what I am making now. I am concerned about retirement. If I can get into a teamsters trucking company I will be set...their pensions are quite nice.
Any other college graduates or non college graduates taken the plunge? How did you like it? Was it as a good as you thought it was going to be?
.
Gourmet 07-14-05, 11:21 PM Pittguy578......just throwing in 2 cents. I'm not really answering your question. I have a college graduate friend who drove a truck for a couple of years. He kept getting lost from his routes and had a poor sense of direction. I don't know if he has ADD or not, but this was an issue with him.
Now I hope someone can give the real answer. :D

I never concidered truck driving because I'm phobic about driving, lol. But I did concider doing home parties for like houseware stuff. Same idea, work on your own, make money and stuff. Some are better than others. My neighbor did truck driving his whole live and loved it. He's since retired and doing just fine. He delivered mushrooms. There are ups and downs as any job has, it's just a personal choice of lifestyle. Of course there is the possiblility of only doing it for a little while instead of a career too.
hammerlane 07-15-05, 09:44 AM pittguy578; do you want to be a local driver, or an over the road driver,? if you are local you can go home every nite, over the road can range frome being away from home from 3 days to 6 weeks or more your choice, i did it for 10 years and i loved it, i was an owner operator and wish i stil did it. i have had 2 back surgeries so sitting all day doesnt work for me. go talk to some local drivers, then go to a truck stop and talk to some over the road drivers to get some more info. they have a bunch of free mags at the truck stops full of companies looking for drivers.
fasttalkingmom 07-15-05, 10:36 AM I'm not a truck driver for say, but I do drive a school bus and could drive certain trucks.
I have always had a bad sense of direction but driving has helped me over come alot of this.
I love to drive and I love kids. I did go to college many years ago to be a pre school teacher. I was a preschool teacher for a short time and then ran my own home based day care for many years.
I work 20 hours a week and make good money for what I work. I could work a 40 hour a week job and make the same.
It's a good job for me but I coudln't say if driving professionally was a good idea for you or anyone you'd have to decided that.
I am a truck driver and I am going back on the road again as of next Wednesday
Ill be running from Ontario to Wisconsin and back , actully very close to St Pauls Minisota,
Getting lost is not an issue if you can run a computer (portable), with Microsoft Map and a GPS
Works very well for me
I do drive a school bus  :faint:
pittguy578 07-17-05, 09:09 PM Thanks for your responses. I am definitely going to look into it
Being very honest, it was something that interested me, at least slightly when growing up, but I pushed it aside as I was expected to go to college which I did..and I did excel there despite my ADHD.
I just can't take going into the office much longer and dealing with adminstrative tasks and angry customers. I hate having to report at a certain time, having to leave at a certain time, having to do certain things just right. My mind hates routine, and I am going nuts. My mind is always stimulated while driving, I can listen to the radio and think and look at all of the movement. It actually calms be down.

Great for you, it sounds like you'd enjoy it. Personally I could never be a driver, truck/bus/or other because of my anxiety issues but more power to you... I'd love to be paid to travel, lol.

Hey pittguy, same here. I remember announcing one night at dinner that I wanted to be a truck driver when I grew up. Like you, I ended up going to college etc. so never pursued it. And like you, I liked the idea of listening to the radio and looking at the scenery. The solitude also appeals to my 'feh, can't deal with people' side.
Alas, I get carsick, have no depth perception, get lost going to work in the morning and tend to drive too fast, so perhaps it's best that I'm not cruising America's highways. But it's cool that you might be doing just that! Let us know how it goes.
