Amphetamine does stick around in the body, it has a long half-life compared to ritalin. Taking adderall after three in the afternoon or taking too much can cause mild insomnia for me.

Its a strange insomnia though. I may feel alert at bedtime, but if I turn out the light and go to bed, I usually fall asleep quickly. Later I might wake up several times during the night.

I also had insomnia when I tapered off from Paxil. With Paxil, I took a higher dose of adderall than I do now, but slept fine. After Paxil with the same dose of adderall, I was having problems sleeping. So, I cut my dose of adderall by a third after talking with my pdoc, and am doing fine now.

I frequently forget to take an afternoon dose. I am reminded at 4 or 5 pm (when I rebound), but now I skip the afternoon dose, rather than take it too late.

For me, the adderall seems to build up a little during the week and so I take less or none on the weekends to flush my system.

I have the opposite problem. I've had insomnia for a long time, due to sleep apnea that went undiagnosed for far too long. I have always had difficulty getting to sleep, but have found that when I am on Adderall during the day, I have absolutely no problem lying down and taking a nap. It has actually taken me less time to fall asleep after taking an Adderall than it does at night after taking sleep medication.

I haven't actually tried taking Adderall at night to see if it will help me go to sleep, though.

Actually, I can also snooze on adderall during the day. In fact, if I'm tired, I get the urge to nap about an hour after I take a dose of adderall. And Adderall doesn't actually wake me up in the morning either. I drink a cup of coffee to get going. I experience speediness only when adderall is wearing off.

Seems contradictary. Yet, if I take adderall too late in the day, I do sleep less soundly at night.

Then again, I always had problems sleeping since I was a child.

My only comparison is with Wellbutrin. I took 150 mgs WB in the mornings for a couple of weeks and slept maybe two hours at night. Now, that was insomnia. I had to get up each night and putz around for hours. You can imagine that didn't work for me.

The other night, I took 30mg XR at 8 in the morning and couldn't fall asleep until 5:30am the next day.

Yet if I cut down the dosage, it's not enough to keep me on task during the day...

I don't understand. Did you take XR in the evening (the other night) or the morning?

In any case, I am not a fan of extended release versions because I tend to metabolize amphetamine slowly. Also, I have such varied days, I just want to dose whenever I need to. I like the control of IR adderall.

The docs seem to start people on XR versions instead of the immediate release stimulants, because they are told XRs are less likely to be abused by adults.

XRs are developed for children who need adult supervision (the school nurse, etc.) to administer their meds. They are designed to mimic twice or thrice a day dosing regimines. Then they're sold to adults (who could dose as needed) with the promise of convienience. I'll get off my sopbox.

The culprit here may be the XR delivery system that causes retention of amphetamines beyond the hours of medication. I personally can't take XR versions of amphetamines.

Have you tried the IR adderall?

I found ritalin never affected my sleep, due to its quick metabolism. Some people take amphetamines during the day and take a final dose of ritalin in the afternoon, for that reason.

Adderall is also used to treat narcalepsy (sp?), you know that disorder where people fall asleep randomly throughout the day. I don't take adderall durring the summer (no classes, no need) and now I have a hard time staying awake for the whole day.... hmmm hopefully the plecebo effect
