How can you find out if your child has a LD? My daughter starts kindergarten in 1 month and I am really nervous. I don't like the idea that we need to wait and see how she does. I don't want to hold her back if there is some way to help her from the start.

I am also SOO not looking forward to what I am sure is going to be a lot of fun with the school system. Kinder. kids here take naps and that is so not going to happen for her. I can bearly get her to sit still for an hour even on her meds let alone ask to quietly lay down and not disrupte anyone for and hour. Is that something that she should be able to do?

I am sorry I am so full of questions I am just getting really nervous as school gets closer. Thanks guys!!

Do not ever be sorry please for posting and asking questions thats what we are all here for.It all depends on where you are from, here in michigan where we live the school system does special testing for LD's.What is it that is going on with her why you believe she has LD's if you do not mind me asking? The nap thing now either she will get used to there routine or they will have to find something for her to do to keep busy during nap time.I owned my own daycare so i know i had a few kids whom did not want to nap for nothing one was my little girl and we changed the name for it to quiet time and that seemed to help a little better as well.Kids think nap time oh no quiet time we found quiet things to do for the children that had a hard time.I wish you all the best with your little girl!!!

I am not for sure she has a LD. She writes ALOT of things backwards, letters, numbers that kind of thing. The problem is when she does it and it isn't right she gets so frustrated. I know I have been told she will outgrow the backwards thing but she is also reading some things backwards. She has a leapster that has helped her tremendously but as I watch her I notice she is reading some the things backwards. It will spell words like cap C A P and she will say P A C cap. I don't know if that is normal for kindergaten or not.
I talked to her physciatrist about her napping in school this morning and he said that she is not by law required to stay at school all day only a half a day. After lunch the kinder class naps and plays outside so there is NO structure and they learn nothing. He said he would schedule a meeting with the school and let them know that I will take her out after lunch if I think it is in her best interst. I am just going to play it by ear the first few weeks and then make my choice.
Luckily for me her kin. teacher is my older daughters teacher from last year so we know each other well and have good communication going on already.
I just realized I wrote a novel here. Thanks

That's a good start already. It sounds like the psychiatrist is listening to your concerns and is willing to work with the school.

I am on top of it early because I have sensed since she was 2 that something was off but I kept being told give her time, give her time, she will out gorw it. I started hearing the same junk with my son. He was 18 months and not walking or talking. My CRAZY mother in law kept saying maybe he doesn't have anything to say, I know kids who didn't talk until they were 3-4-5 and so on. I DID NOT listen and they are getting ready to screen him for autism and he is still not talking. He is walking. Because I didn't listen and got him into therapy early.

I am going to keep an eye on it! Thanks

I would check out your states laws re: testsing. In Mass there is an I.E.P. (independent, education, plan) test that you can request and by law they have to comply to see if your child has a LD. I am a pre k teacher (not in the public school system) and had no idea about this until my son's 2nd grade teacher requested a meeting and we brought copies of his exams to his therapist to review. The teachers were concerned but didn't seem to pursue it. The therapist was sure that his school work issues were due to a LD. I would do searches, call the school or state dep. of education. Often schools won't mention these types of test and help available because it costs them money. Sad fact but true. I would look into it. I was so excited to find out about it and that it was mandatory of requested. His test is this fall because we wanted to have it after 3rd gr. transition but they are usually required to be done w/in 30 days. I know it's tough to reach people in the summer but I thought it might give you a direction....Jac

one of the first signs of a learning dissoder (LD) is stuff like reading backwards. I showed symptoms similar to this before my diagnosis and to an extent still do and i have 3 seperat LD's and its possable i have a 4th but i've not looked into it.
