View Full Version : It's 3am... still awake!
LittlePrincess 07-29-05, 04:24 AM I slept exceptionally well last night and I took an Adderall XR 20mg this morning at about 9:30. Now why am I still awake after 3:20am ? :(
I've taken XR and also IR... usually I don't get like this unless I take them too close to bedtime! :(
Maybe because I slept so well last night, my body doesn't feel like it needs as much rest? maybe? I don't know- any thoughts ?? anyone?
livinginchaos 07-29-05, 03:51 PM There are could be other things that cause a sleepless night. Were you feeling restless? Did you have a lot on your mind?
here are a couple suggestions for a sleepless night: (I get insomnia very easily, these suggestions come from my doc)
+ after 15 minutes of trying to sleep, get up - and do something relaxing that won't stimulate your brain (I usually read)
+ Try breathing -lay on your back, palms facing up, no body part should be crossed - and breathe. You need to concentrate to do this - easier said than done - but if you really want to sleep/relax, you can do this!!
As you're breathing, count
take a breathe - think 1
exhale - think 2
inhale - think 3
exhale - think 4
inhale - think 1
and so on
- - - If you go past 4, you're not concentrating on your breathing
This exercise helps you focus on your breathing, so you can relax and sleep
+ Don't look at your clock - it could make you more anxious
+ keep melatonin ready to go. It's a natural med (find at a natural store) that helps put you to sleep
Good luck! I hope you sleep tonight.
one last suggestion:
Whatever you do - when you try to sleep - don't focus on that you couldn't sleep last night - so you have to sleep tonight. It will keep you awake.
vegansoprano 07-29-05, 10:30 PM My experience is not so much that it's hard to sleep on Adderall - more like it's way too easy to stay awake!
I have to discipline myself to turn off the computer, put the book down, forget about finishing "one more thing", and just get in bed and turn off the light.
Personally, it helps me to have the TV on with the volume low, tuned to something amusing but not that engaging (late-night talk shows like Conan O'Brien work for me). That way I don't stress about things while I'm trying to fall asleep. I can amuse and distract myself with the show but it doesn't make it even harder for me to fall asleep.
LittlePrincess 07-29-05, 10:35 PM Hey vegan- i think that is my problem too. I'll be working on the computer, watch tv, and do other things. Then all of a suddon- oh no!! It's after 3am!!!
I ended up sleeping last night though. I'm going to try to go to bed around midnight tonight... Hope it works!!
badders 07-30-05, 02:20 PM first time i got on Adderall IR, i stayed awake for 40 hours straight! it coincided with a deadline at work so it wasn't "bad".
however, the sleeplessness effect wears down after a couple of weeks. and i also learned not to take it after 2-3pm in the afternoon. and i imagine for XR, you probably don't want to take it after 12pm.
solitary bee 07-30-05, 05:18 PM i had major sleep problems for years started by pain. income difficulties due to inability to work due to pain then caused anxiety. i take sleeping pills but even those do nothing if i'm worked up over something.
so i've gone through a long programme of sleep hygiene. as livinginchaos wrote, if you can't fall asleep in a designated period of time, for me it's 20 minutes, then get out of bed. do something else that isn't stimulating and when you start to feel drowsy, go back to bed.
do not watch TV in bed.
do not use your bed for anything but sleep and sex.
do not have a telephone beside your bed.
take a warm bath before bedtime.
also, these days i've discovered that having soothing simple music on a low volume helps me get to sleep. i've got a CD of sanskrit chants, Leonard Cohen's 'singing', and Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness meditation CDs although not supposed to be for sleep all work for me. i often wake up after about 4 hours of sleep and if i can't fall asleep again after a few minutes i turn on the CD player. there are 8 tracks on the sanskrit chant CD and i have never heard past half of the 2nd.
i also exercise every day. that helps to use up some of the nervous energy and staves off depression.
Nocturnal 07-31-05, 08:43 PM If I take my Adderall 20mgx2 after 10:30AM in the mornings I will not be able to sleep.

Even when I take adderall later in the day, if I just go to bed instead of puttering around, I usually fall asleep right away.
Seroquel will end all your sleeping problems.
