Hello out there:

Hello everyone. I am sitting here knowing that I can't be the only one in this boat that I am in. I have a huge (occasional) problem with DXM. (cough syrup). If I am having problems with my "racing tongue" or my racing thoughts, I end up taking DXM to slow me down. I love how I am when I am on this stuff. This is NOT how it should be and I know that. I think that everyone else likes me when I am on DXM too, because, I get many people say to me that I am "calmer" and a different person on these times when I have taken the DXM. I take just enough I don't "overdose" and nobody actually knows that I am under the influence of another substance. I don't want to be in a stupor, I just want to be happy in a way that I can say that I am ok with the way things are. That is what DXM will do to me. I guess you could call it euphoria. I feel so close to everyone around me and forgiveness of the things that people have done to me is VERY EASY. Everything is just perfect and the way I want it to be at the time. That is what I feel and, that is what I want when things are "too fast" in my mind and body. Just here venting and wondering if anymore of youse got addictions or problems with this same drug. Thanks for reading. . .

Hi Shinobi:

Hello there it is Fast Talker here. . . I neglected to mention that I do have a formal diagnosis. I have ADHD and I have quite a dose of Ritilan everyday but that does not curb anything. I have already tried Dexidrine and that did even less for me. I have talked to the doctor already and nothing seems to be resolved with this little "occasional" trip that I go on with the DXM. Thanks for the response and hope to hear from all of you soon. Bye for now,

Hmmm, the stuff your using is an opid (if i remember correctly). Sooner or later your proly going to find your tollerence going up and that can lead to alot of problems. Also, dont expect wonders off the ritalin if your using opids as well. Eather way, have you asked your doc about trying a diff med for your ADhD. There are loads, sooner or later you will find one that works.

Shinobi-DXM is not an opioid, if that's what you meant by 'opid'. Fast Talker-How often are you using it and how many mg/trip? I'm trying to get a clearer picture of your situation.

Hello there. Fast talker here. Taking DXM is not an everyday thing for me. I do take it to get a high first or medium 2nd plateau. Nothing more. I have gotten a rapid tolerance to the DXM but that is from before I was diagnosed. I was diagnosed in March 2005. I did really heavy doses in December 2004. That was when I was refered to my psychiatrist. He knows about my past with the OTC highs. I had a terrible addiction to Gravol in high school. But in December 2004 I discovered the DXM. That is all for now. I hope this is enough information. If there is anything I left out just let me know and I will fill you in.

When I had a really bad cough in my 20's I used Hall's cough drops with dextromethophan and discovered that it waked me up and made me feel clearer, less foggy. However, this scared me a bit too, and I stopped taking them when my cough was better.
I guess that was a sign that I have ADD, but who knew?

Maybe you should consider a low dose of memantine, the Alzhiemer's medicine. Dextromethorphan is a potent NMDA-receptor antagonist, but the problem is that cough medicines normally contain a number of ingredients such as antihistamines and decongestants that make them less than optimal. NMDA is a glutamte receptor in the brain, and among many functions it has extensive interactions with the dopamine system (which is aberrant in ADHD).

Researchers are just starting to look at NMDA-antagnoists for the treatment of ADHD, but preliminary finding suggest that can be very effective. Memantine is currently the leading candidate. Besides it's NMDA effects, memantine is also a serotonin 3 (5-HT3) antagonist, and it modulates the activity of certain nicotinic receptor subtypes. These mechanisms are known to enhance cognition.

If you can't get memantine covered cheap, you can order it through certain "Nootropic" websites for a decent price.

Good luck to you,

Hello there. That bit of information on the NMDA-receptor antagonist was very useful. I researched the Alzheimers drug that you talked about. That was on Drugs.com. It was not an article on the use of the NMDA-receptor antagonist in the treatment of ADHD but a professional's monograph of the primary use of the drug for dementia. I am currently in the process of researching this on the net.

I know lots on the drug Dextromethorphan. I have researched that drug to death so to speak. I found a really good source of information for DM. It is the DXM FAQ by William White and gives every bit of information on the drug.

I have always wondered why such a substance as DXM was not used in the treatment of ADHD. The ways that it really makes the attention span increase. The slowing effect on the impulsivity and most of all for addictions. Not having "cravings" for any other substance. You are just fine with what you have in you at that time. I don't know how many others have noticed this but I am hoping that this is something that the Medical Association will put into action. Thank you for your response to my thread. Thanks a million.

Nothing solid has been published specifically about ADHD, but there is research pertaining to NMDA-antagonists and cognition. That doesn't mean research isn't being conducted. If you get a chance to pickup Hallowell's book Delivered From Distraction, there is a good bit on memantine, and alludes to studies that are now underway.

I hope you are able to find what you are looking for. :)

My best friend is currently on a methadone program after getting addicted to Heroin. He used to be addicted to DXM and he told me it almost ruined his life. He's done about every drug under the sun and the only two that nearly destroyed him was heroin and DXM.

You should really try to find a doctor prescribed medication that will provide the relief you clearly need that is also safe. I'd suggest talking to a doctor about the symptoms you have that DXM relives and there's most likely a medication out there that will help without being so destructive.
