I am going to apply for a state job and I know they will drug test me. I have no problem with this, but I am taking Dextroamphetamine for my ADD. I do not want to have to tell my potential employer that I have ADD or that I am taking medication. Is there any way I can tell the people who perform the drug test about by medication without them being able to disclose this to the company who requests it? I have never had to take a drug test and I don't know if this will show up. I'm in Oklahoma and there is a problem with amphetamine abuse in this state, so I'm assuming they will test for this. Will I need a note from my doctor that this is prescribed medication?
Thanks

I really do not know because I am in Michigan but I know here you just have to show your perscription bottle to the person doing the drug test so they can write that down incase it does show up in your system.Good luck with this, you will be ok!!!;)

There was random drug testing at a job where I was a few years back. The lab is the only one who knows you are on amphetamines. Tell them when they do the test, but they'll call you anyway, and say: "Your drug test came back postiive for amphetamines." That's when you have your bottle in hand, doctor's phone number and pharmacy phone number available. They will ask.

After that, they are all like, "Oh...OK, thank you!"

So, as far as I know, the employer never knows anything about your medical treatment. Since you are under a doctor's care, it's privileged information.

When asked for a list of drugs you're on list the add drug. The only person that should see that information would be the lab you're getting tested at. Good Luck with the job application and interview.

Its just like your doctor sharing medical information without your consent with your future employer...HIGHLY ILLEGAL!!!!

Just follow the advice above have your bottle with you for quick reference for Dr. number and Pharmacy number in case the clinic doing the test wants to check but they generally don't.

The last time this happened to me was a few years ago, when I was taking Dexedrine (that's dextroamphetamine), got a new job, and was asked to take a pre-employment drug screen. When I did the drug screen, I told the doctors and lab techs there that I was taking Dexedrine as a prescription medication. They wrote that down on my lab paperwork, but they warned me that it would still cause a positive on the amphetamines test.

I was called by HR a few days later and told that I had showed positive for amphetamines. I told the HR person that I was taking a prescription medication, and offered to get a doctor's note. She said "OK, as long as it's prescription, you're good," and the matter was closed. Never heard anything about it since.

Um...aren't drug tests at work illegal? I mean, I've never been asked for one, and if I were, I think I'd laugh. But seriously, isn't getting drug tested at work a GIANT violation of many if not all of your rights?

Well, thankfully I have not been tested (I say thankfully b/c I'm trying to avoid having to tell any employer about my "condition"). It is not against the law in OK to drug test. Most employers will do a pre-screen test when they interview BEFORE they even consider hiring you. If you refuse to test they can fire you, or they can not hire you if they pre-screen. I do think it is a major privacy violation in my book. Any med. I am on and why is no one elses business! I agree they should test at work if they suspect you are under the influence of illegal drugs/alcohol WHILE AT WORK, but what goes on out of work is NOYB. My opinion. The point is... telling someone about my ADD should be MY decision. I would like the option to decide if & when I tell someone. There are so many who don't understand ADD and will pre-judge me.

I started working (part time) almost a month ago. The stress is so low it unbelieveable. Only 2 others in office and I make my own schedule. It is a great hyperfocusing job for me - and still keeps my interest b/c I'm being creative and crafty all day and every day is something different. So that's good news! BTW this place doesn't test and I have NOT mentioned having ADD. What a relief!

I wonder if it would be a good idea for pre-emplyment screenings to clear your body of stimulants for a couple of days, rather than reveal medical use (due to the stigma).

Would this work? How many days would be required?

Stimulants generally only stay in your body in traceable amounts for a couple of days. Just to be safe, I'd stay off the stimulants for 4-5 days, then you should be clean.

Maybe it has to do with the kind of work you do. We have a state mandated random drug testing. I never know when I'll get called.

As far as I can tell, drug tests at work are perfectly legal in the U.S.

Workplace drug and alcohol testing are illegal - if you live in Canada, like "bcaddkid". Drug screens only indicate past useage - they can't determine the level of impairment, nor when the drug was consumed - so they are completely useless as a safety measure - they prove nothing. And it's a medical test - and Canadian law prohibits discrimination on the basis of health or medical issues. Which is why the Canadian Human Rights Commission policy is to forbid them in all but the most unusual cases.
Drug testing in the US has more to do with the government's war on drugs - as well as keeping people in certain socio-economic classes in their "place" - than it does with public safety.
If I was taking such a test in the USA and was "worried", I would report the usage of cold medications containing detromethorphan (which often causes tests to be positive for marijuana), psuedoephedrine (which I think may show positive for amphetamines) and I'd mention how much I like to eat poppy-seed bagels for breakfast (eating poppy seeds will test you positive for opiates). And I'd bring by prescription pill bottle(s) with me too.
I would be very offended by a request for a drug test and would not work anywhere that required one.
And tests are notoriously inaccurate. Around 10% false positive rate for the "good" drug tests, and I've heard as high as 30% for the el-cheepo tests that many companies use.
