View Full Version : Great Idea! I like this area's idea!
Wheel1975 09-10-03, 10:05 PM I'll be bck to post some things here!
4.95 kitchen timer. goes off for one full minute, setable, easily for minutes and hours. Warning beeps at half the set time, 15 minutes, 10 minutes 5 minutes and THE SET TIME.
Available from Walgreens Pharmacy here in St. Louis. I have 6. they break, so get a supply. comes with a stand, clip and magnet. shows hours and minutes as a count down.
I never set it if i don't commit to respecting it. I set them and clip them to papers, jobs, etc. to remind me to re-address those tasks when they go off. I never let the 1 minute alarm go off without getting my full consideration.
My choices are: Set it again, do it now, decide to never do it and turn off the timer.
Jonathan 09-11-03, 02:19 AM I said "rarely", but a simple "No" might have been more accurate: I use reminders in Microsoft Outlook, but for appointments, so this is not really an ADD accommodation. Wait a minute, I do have a daily reminder in Outlook to pick up my son from Kindergarten, and another one to go to lunch! I don't think a non-ADDer would need these (nor do I, really, any more, but haven't got round to removing them...).
waywardclam 09-11-03, 03:08 AM I used to do this with my watch alarm but I lost my watch... *sheepish grin*
My cell phone has a calendar feature on it and an alarm clock feature. I've inconsistently used the calendar feature to remind me to make phone calls, go to meetings, etc. But I definitely use the alarm clock feature every workday morning--it's one of THREE I have to use. :D
joanrdtobe 09-11-03, 10:46 AM No, none of the above....I should but don't......:(
I can appreciate the use of timers as I used them when I worked in Quality Control.
I have found its better to regulate my life now to doing things that are inconsistant with time and appointments
My wife takes care of stuff that needs to be taken care of and I take care of stuff that doesnt
She is the best timer I could ever find in any store
Wheel1975 09-14-03, 10:54 PM Human for Time oriented, adhd for task oriented.
joanrdtobe 09-15-03, 03:32 AM Like I said in another thread....which one was it??? I forget....but it said something like "Dear God, if you're listening, please find me a husband"......this time so he may be my "timer".....LOL
waywardclam 10-02-03, 05:14 PM Dammit... I found my watch and was so happy that I could finally set timer reminders for myself again...
And then I lost it again. :( :( :(
InattentiveType 10-02-03, 05:40 PM I use the Event-Alarm feature on my phone to remind me to take my meds.
Thats the only alarm I use right now. I may use alarms for other things as well.
My phone is too much of a PITA to use it for managing anything other than re-occurring tasks that I only have to enter into the phone one time.
My Palm is good for reminders but I very rarely use it. I always leave home without it. Especially in the summer when I don't have jacket pockets to keep it in.
Written to-do-lists are the thing that somewhat works for me. Now an alarm reminder to check my to-do-list might be a good idea. :)

Thanks

mctavish23 10-26-03, 02:50 PM I've lost my watch man..lol( but it's a great idea).
healthwiz 10-26-03, 05:36 PM I lost a watch, had no idea where it was and then after 3 months traveled from florida to pennsylvania watchless, and found an old coat of mine up there, that i forgot there, and in the pocket, was my watch. I still have that watch, a year and a half later, lol.
i use to use timers a lot, now i look at the time a lot. but i think using timers is very helpful.
I have my daughter use a timer to help her get her homework done faster

tiggwin 02-28-04, 11:45 PM YES!! I have real trouble getting to bed early enough to get 8 hours sleep--always have had this problem. I set my Casio runners watch to go off 15 minutes before I want to start winding it down for the night. It goes off every night like clockwork. :D sorry!
My PDA and desktop software also pop up on my screen and give an audible alarm [what do you know--the little sucker just went off as I write this] for work and personal reminders. I also have an digital alarm clock across the room from my home computer to get my **** off the internet sometimes since I get so focused; time vanishes quickly for me while surfin and doing just this.
Oh yeah -- I lost 2 good watches in the last 10 years. BOTH times, I left them in the inside pocket of my jacket at weddings (about 5 years apart). I returned it with my tux the first time. I think someone stole the second one. I have no idea why I took them off in the first place.
nnamelet 03-08-04, 11:48 AM Good show! Your timer will be valuable. Also check out the marvelous new Vibralite watch I describe in a new thread. It does repeated countdowns and permits a vigorous but silent jog even when you're in others' company

LoveMyGirls 08-13-04, 10:22 PM I use a timer on most days to help my daughter get up in the morning, although I just bought her an alarm, so that will definitly come in handy. I also use a timer when I need her to stay on task and get done in a certain amount of time. She has absolutely no sense of time, so we need to use it or she'll drift off and do whatever catches her attention at that moment.

I use a timer in a slightly different way. I am horrible at getting housework done. In order to motivate myself to do the housework, I set the timer for fifteen minutes and then go crazy cleaning - for fifteen minutes.
When the timer goes off, I am done. Sometimes I am really into it by then. In that case, I set the timer for another fifteen minutes and off I go again, like the tasmanian devil. If not, at least I got fifteen minutes worth of housework done.
I learned that and a few other "bless your house" techniques from the flylady at flylady.net. Susan
I have tried it in the past, but like everything else i try, it fizzeles out and i stop doing it!
