I've been at a telemarketing job for a month now. All of my jobs have always been walking jobs up until this point.
I like my job but just the fact that I have to stay in that cubicle seems like an eternity to me. And then, they only want you to go to the break rooms and not outside because of past problems with drug trafficking in the parking lot I guess. I"m always spinning, changing position, and climbing up on my chair and spinning and walking back and forth on down time by it. I get so jealous of the supervisors and team leads who get to walk around. I just get so irritated and restless. Does anyone have any ideas for this? Please let me know. I don't want to get fired from this job since I barely made it to get hired and I've been through too many. It is my biggest battle as of now besides the attention.

Are you committed to this job for the long haul? In other words, if not for the "walking around" issue, would you be happy there?
You can probably go the ADA/"reasonable accomodations" route but that might not be the best way to start out. Does HR have an employee relations person you could go see for advice?
(Sorry, stream-of-consciousness advice, worth every penny you're paying for it as always...)
Any job I work at, I let the boss know after a month, that I need a cigarette break every single hour, sometimes more, also I made my boss get this managers chair for me which helps so much, get the chair that fits your body, have your breaks every hour, & you should be ok.

Thank you cynical and T-bass for the input.
Kind of scared talking to the HR person at work and the bosses and yes I'm there for the long haul at least and I like it besides just the walking factor. I'm there until I can get my dog training biz up and going for now, at least. I do best in entreprenuial pursuits where I"m my own boss, but I don't have the money, so its a job that I'm using to set money aside for it.
I've never been good at making my needs known with people since I just want to try and be normal like everyone else, but it won't work. I've tried several times and I've lost jobs that way before. How did you approach your HR and bosses at work? Would like to know that one..........Just don't want people to say I'm lazy or crazy, using it as an excuse and view me different then they did. They said its a good work place, but I have trust issues from other workplaces yet so its scary...........

I'm an Office Admin. So that means I'm sitting for about 70% of my day. The good thing about my job is that I sit in the front of the office and everyone else is in the back. So instead of using the intercom I'll walk my happy butt back there and talk to them...I make sure to keep things clean around the office..so that means at least twice a day I'm doing something other than sitting at my desk looking at my screen...I also try to keep index cards with cool sayings or positive thoughts on my desk so when i'm not able to focus i can look at those and just breathe deeply and try to re-focus my mind. I also re-arrange my desk at least 4 times a week...I've re-arranged everything my whole life (thanks to my OCD)...
Umm...what else can you do...
I get super tired just sitting (working of course) so I'll get up and wash my face with cool water along with my hands...and just stay in there for a couple of minutes to rest my poor mind.
Ask for task that you can do NOT sitting down. My sister has come to realize that some days I CANNOT for the life of me SIT at my desk..I walk around my desk and the tables by it but sitting NOPE can't do it....so she'll help me find cleaning task or organizing task to do instead of being at my desk....
Also maybe a radio or your favorite CD's would help. I don't know if you can do this but I'll tx my friends when i'm bored just to get a different thought in my head besides phone calls and paper work.
okay i think thats enough..i'm a big talker today i'm not sure why though...
good luck...i'm sorry you have a tele job ... and if i've ever been rude to you.. i hope you know you don't have to stay at that job forever... have you ever thought about getting a desk job at a bank? I used to work for the fraud department for bank of america...really easy job, benifits, good pay...funny people...

I used to do telemarketing. I never took it very seriously like a lot of people did. I tried, but I found it wasn't worth it. I just wanted my $9/hour really, that was better than most part-time jobs my friends had. I would take a lot of little bathroom breaks, I'd always use up the 15 minutes they'd give for that. And luckily the chairs were all swiveling, so I'd do that alot. And I made friends there, so I'd usually have someone to talk to between calls. Main thing is though that I would doodle. I used to try and study in between calls, but they don't let you do that.
