Look! Now I can protect me from myself! Those people who can't resist the siren call of the web, games or other time-wasters despite a looming deadline might find this useful.
The guy at Lifehacker has developed free software that allows you to block your own access to certain programs for a specified length of time. Here is his site:

I've downloaded the program (only works on Windows so far, although the comments section discusses the possibility of creating a Mac version) with no problems/virii, and successfully prevented myself from playing Solitaire all night instead of doing work.
