Well, I just joined the Board today. I will be starting ADD meds this week hopefully. I'm 28 and have been lifting for about a year and a half now consisitently.

Do any of you know if bodybuilding suppplements will interfere with ADD meds. I'm seeing a doctor tommorrow so I don't know what meds I'll be taking but for bodybuilding I currently take:

ON Whey Protein (lots of BCAA's)
VPX Micellean (casein protein)
Green Bulge (Creatine Ethyl Ester)
GNC Mega Men Multivitamin
Fish oil/flaxseed oil

None of these will interfere w/ your meds. The only thing that may (that's OTC) might be any of the energy drinks or the "fat burners" ...the main ingredient in those is caffeine...whackloads...so it may provide too much stimulation for you

Building for the fun off it. Relieves alot of stress and make me focus on something which is productive for me. Sporting makes my ADD feel better and I am too bored by running a track, exercise should be brutal heavy and exciting, that's lifting. =) Anyway.. cool to have some more fellow lifters here.

I lift several times a week. Have been doing it for years, but I am far from a body builder.

It is probably my most fun thing to do and a great stress reliever.

You don't need a threadmill to cut the fat. When I cutted up I did like 10 walks total during one month but I did change my diet to the extreme. Dropped from 14-15% BF to around 11%. Start lifting again and look up on bodybuilding sites on how to "cut".

mctavish23: I agree completly!

ADDvancedMuscle: You are so funny. I'm bigger ;)

yeah go with an EC stack and a good diet! then you dont _have_ to do cardio given you are lifting weights and you will achieve fast results. personally i love the feeling of running around till halfdead.....but only with my mp3player and preferrably if the weather is either hot or cold =D

I am as well... sort of.. but no where near competitive... I have more than enough size for natural competitions but there is no way in hell I am going to get my bodyfat under 8%... I got it to 10% and that was about as far as it would go.... not to mention I am not fond of wearing almost thong speedos and prancing around on a stage :D ...

Right now I am just barely 5'7 and about 205lbs I would estimate my bodyfat to be about 12-14% or so right now though.. back in my college power lifting days I hit just over 230... a soft 230 but damn was I strong... my body hurts too much for too long when I go crazy with the real heavy weights these days.. so I am a bit more sane about how I train.

I guess you could say I am. I work with a personal trainer two times a week for a little over a year. It's strictly weight training. I never do any cardio. Is that normal? I've actually surprised myself with the progress I've made. I really love it but it's a struggle in my mind to accept the fact that the few lbs I've gained is muscle not fat. All I see is a number and I freak out so I've stopped weighing myself altogther.

Hey everyone,

Bodybuilder here. I'm 24 and have been doing it since I was 16. It was always my outlet for ADD, intense workouts were the only time I could focus and think clearly before I was prescribed adderall a little over a month ago.

Since being prescribed, I've noticed a huge difference in my life and in my workouts. But we'll talk workouts for now. I have an amazing focus in the gym now, it used to take forever to think what the next exercise would be, now I feel totally dialed in. My 5-6 meal a day diet is perfect right now and I'm stronger than ever with the lowest Bodyfat % I've ever held. Just yesterday I flat benched 2 sets 125lbs dumbells for 8 reps and wasn't tired. I used to be a fitness model, and now I'm thinking of competing at a show.

I wouldn't call myself a body builder.. More like a body renovationist.. I am trying to get myself to the point where I can bodybuild again.. I just need to drop some more weight and then I can bulk up..

Or am I the only one?

Are any of you guys taking stimulants i.e. ritalin, etc... If so, do you take them before or after you lift? Notice any differences in endurance, heart rate, breathing effort?

I've been working out since I was 17, I am currently 21. I've been on Adderall for about 5 months and on zoloft for almost a year. Like most other ADDers working out has helped me cope with ADD a lot before I was prescribed stimulants. I used to take Caffeine all thetime and for my workouts too, ephedrine was added on later. ADDvanced Muscle talked about the EC (ephedrine and caffeine) combo earlier, not sure if anyone picked up on it. Do not do this if you are being prescirbed stimulants, as it will further increase HR and BP and just add to sideffects. Casinowife you should not look at gaining muscle as a turn off from bodybuilding, on contrary it should be motivation. As long as you are not using steroids you WILL NOT become a man, trust nature on this one. Matty B- props to you on the dbell lifts, most i've ever done was 105 dbless for like 3 reps. Adderall increases my concentration, and sometimes strength at the gym, this strength variable is dependent significantly on my diet, as when I don't eat enough I think the adderall actually makes me weaker then I would be otherwise under the same diet. I seem to heat up a little more with the adderall and my heart rate might be a little faster, including a slight increase in BP, but nothing major. The only things you shouldn't mix with ADD meds are bodybuilding supplements, such as ephedrine, yohimbine, stimulants in general, i think its ok to have a bit of coffee still... and of course steroids. I'm asssuming no one here is taking steroids for BBing, and if you are, please stop taking your ADD meds to minimize damage. Stimulants and steroids is simply a recipe for disaster for your heart, as well as liver and kidneys, but expecially your heart. I know a BB who used to take cocaine and steroids, so far he's had two heart attacks, he's currently 27. Oh yeah, as for the concentration when working out this has to do with dopamine (no brainer) as working out has been proven to increase dopamine in the body, just like our medications. Best of Luck everyone and keep on training!

I take adderall and my workouts are a lot better while I'm on it, but I'm concerned with the affects it has on muscle tissue (since adderall contains amphetamines)

Been lifting and working out for years.... Working on my Personal Trainer certification through ACSM right now, but been a cert. Group Fitness Instructor for 15 years. Love lifting and I'm contemplating a competition again. Dropped out of the last one I tried b/c (duh...ADD) I lost my motivation after getting sick. Bummer. I really have trouble w/ the diet aspect.... I love to eat and have Hypothyroidism. (slow metabolism) THAT'S a bummer...:p

I've been body building for a few years, my only worries is now that I am on Adderall if it will overly speed my metabolism and burn muscle..

Im a former bodybuilder although I never could cut my bodyfat low enough to compete. I tried several occasions to compete, but I could never get my bodyfat to around 4%. I no longer have the desire to compete, and ive switched my goals to boxing. I have a much better chance at competing in boxing.

i'm on dex and am also worried about this...

cortisol will kill off any muscle i've gained and will make fat deposits around the abdomen increase...

annoying when you work so hard at the gym and also want to focus at uni

Looks like a lot of good experience here!

Can someone recommend a good soy based protein supplement?

Hey Stevie, I use Maximum Protein from GNC. I like the taste w/ 118 Kcals and 22 grams whey protein. Chocolate's great. Haven't tried vanilla. Just be careful about what they try to push onto you at GNC. Don't pay full price, ask them what kind of specials they have going on. They are in it for the $$.

If you guys/gals are serious(or not) into lifting and want solid info, check out this website http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/ I've found some really helpful information. I'm competing in a Figure competition here next month and have gotten down to 10% BF. Whoo hoo! I eat very clean, healthy fresh foods and lift a 4 day split. I've got my cert in Personal Training from ACSM and I'm using myself as a ginea pig! I've been in fitness for close to 15 years now and I'm still learning! It's fun though! I love learning.

I take Ritalin first thing in the morning and it helps me "wake up" so I can actually put an effort into my workouts. If I forget my drugs, I can tell. There's no pep and I feel "clouded" and lazy.

Good luck to all!

so the ritalin doesnt hamper your lbm gains?

thewfh
08-24-07, 11:34 PM
Not at all.... I've gotten great strength gains...have lost 12 lbs of fat and gained 2 lbs of muscle. ( I do a 4 day split w/ heavy loads and cardio 6x's a week) I actually feel ready to work after taking my meds in the am. If I forget them, I just don't have the drive or strength to follow through w/ my workout. I have to "push" through my lethargy just to keep moving. Ritalin just makes me operate "normally". I used to self-medicate w/ 8 to 10 cans of diet Mt Dew/ Pepsi just to feel "normal" and not sluggish.

wow... i was worried it would counteract it all.
