Hello. My name is April. My son was just diagnosed with AS and I'm having a hard time understanding it. My son Gavin was diagnosed with ADHD five years ago, but a month ago I took him to a psychiatrist and he told me that Gavin was misdiagnosed and that he has AS instead. That came as a shock. I guess I'm here to hopefully learn about AS and maybe hear how other people parent their kids that have AS. It's all so confusing to me....And then there are the medication issues...I have so many questions! For now I'll just read some posts and maybe some of them will be answered.
SebGavZane, what questions do you have/what information do you require? I might be able to help you.
I'm not a parent but am dxed ASD.
Aspergers is a very high functioning form of autism.. Some theorize that Bill Gate of Microsoft has Aspergers..
Thankfully now the school systems (Especially here in Oregon) and they have a full time that works with the parents and child to teach them really good coping strategies..
There is a really good book that my wife and I just read called "Can I tell you about Asperger Syndrome: A guide for friends and family" by Jude Welton.
The book is awesome, I was able to read it in about 30 minutes and its very "plain language" so that just about everyone can understand it. I am probably going to have my son read it too..
Hope this helps. If you have more questions, ask.. Although I just found out recently about my child as well. So I'm kind of a newbie to this too..
