I just want to throw this one out there.
Basically I get the feeling that "normals" have wierd memory lapses.
How many times has someone told you something , be it a story
or whatever, and you think , "You've told me that already!!:(:(.

It could have been said an hour ago, a week ago or a month ago,
(possible link to lack of interest "I've heard this before so I'm not interested to hear it again"- brain switches off:D)
But the way they tell it, its like the first time they've said to you :eyebrow:

I don't like repeating myself, because I think it would be boring for the listener,
and strangely enough for me also, even though I do alot of internal repetition
I mean why would you want to hear something you've heard before.

P.s. Before anyone says "what, you don't repeat yourself. I do, but I am aware that I've said it before whereas "normals" don't seem to be aware

I often start telling someone about something, only to stop myself a second later and say "Oh wait...I've already told you that, haven't I?". Others, on the other hand, will tell two different versions of the same story on different occasions, and I'll be sitting there thinking "Wait a minute, that's not consistent with what you told me last time". The joys of remembering trivial details :D

Uh huh.
Yep.
Many, many times. With variations.
(sigh)
I could tell some of the stories myself. And there is just no diverting them, is there?
Oh well, my revenge is to tell my own similar story again too, even though I know I am repeating myself. So far however it hasn't stopped any of the repeaters in my life from repeating!

My nonADD partner has been telling me the same stories for years.
I think it's a different level of boredom.
He is always amused and enjoys repeating a story.
And I'm thinking, Oh no not that one again. LOL

Telling a story once is enough for me.
Unless I'm telling it to someone who hasn't heard it before.

Well, as a nonADDer, I can assure you from my heart that most of the repeating is simply due to gas. ;)

I hate this! You talk to someone and they begin to tell you a story, one they've told you already. The details are all the same, with the same emphasis, the same twists, and the same ending. How can people do this? I don't just refrain from repetition for the sake of my audience, I do it because I would drive MYSELF insane! For example, I'm a waiter right now, and I find that even if I have an approach that seems to work well, I will mix it up because I feel aggravated saying the same crap over and over. I simply can't do it! :D

Ok, I'll say something a little more serious: there is a certain pleasure in repetition, the anticipation of something recognized, the pleasure in the resolution.

It's why we tell our kids the same stories over and over before bed, why we see all the operas or listen to the top 5 pop songs over and over again, or why we value people who are storytellers, and listen with pleasure as they treat us to our favourite tales.

e.g. how the grinch stole christmas??? I watch that cartoon every year like clockwork, but I know it backward and forward already a million times.

crime_scene The repetition you are talking about in watching a movie you love over and over.
Or reading a good book again I understand that.
For me though listening to someone tell the same story over and over again.
Makes me want to smack my head against the wall.
For me the ADDer there is something different between those things.
And I'm really not sure how to explain that to you.
Maybe someone else will come along and help me out with this. :)
But I do love the kind of repetition you are talking about.
Except for me its " A Christmas Story" LOL The Grinch is cool though too.

Because of my adhd I tend to be impatient and restless. Maybe that is what's contributing to our irritation caused by the repetition in some people's "broken records". My dad gets that "glossed over" look from me quite a lot. :D

It would be interesting to know what the difference is....maybe the things that end in positive (to you) way are more worth the rep.

Often when people tell a story over and over its because they have a problem and so there may not be any resolution to it...no action taken, which is much more frustrating.

Is this close?

HI crime_scene
Lets see how to explain this?
Last week I spent every night sitting on the couch with my friend.
She had her heart broken. So of course I expect repetition.
As the friend its my job to listen.
In my first post here where I talked about my nonADD partner repeating the same stories.
Those are all cute and postive stories.
So I'd have to say for myself it's not a matter if something is postive or negative.
It's more about the amount of work it takes for me to listen to the same stories repeated over and over again.
I guess that's what I'm having a hard time explaining.
The effort it takes to listen.
And how much harder it becomes to listen to something you've heard many times before.
Just because it's hard for me to listen to his same old stories from 10 years ago. Doesn't mean that I'm not still listening. ;)
I hope this makes more sense for you.
If not feel free to ask me more questions. lol
I don't mind.

I understand the head smacking feeling...although I always wished they came with a fast foreward button kind of like a tape recorder.

I understand the favorite song thing... :D .....I can see the movie repitiation sort of. For me if I watch the same movie from start to finish three times it is an excellent movie. The Christmans story things well I don't really do those for myself quit watching them about the third time I saw them because they lost thier excitement. However I watched them several more times with my children because I wanted to pass some thing from my younger years onto my youngsters. That is one of the few things "still around".

Repitation has several reasons that I can see.

#1 The person who tells the story feels good when re-living the memory while telling the story. This would be a shared joy if you were a part of the original experience.

#2 They don't remember telling you the story the first 500 times.

#3 they don't think you remember the story (ADDers are known for their forgetfullness)

#4 There is a moral or point in the story they are wanting to make!!!!!

My kids are ADD, when they became older I would ask them if they rememebred the story about ????? If they said yes then I would draw my point from only the portion required to make it!!!!!

They don't like repetive stories unless they are a part of them in a good way!!!!!

#5 As already mentioned they are trying to deal with some of the memories, emotions ect....related to the experience.

Hope this helps some one some where!!!!!!
