How do you feel about the library?

View Full Version : Could you spend all day in the library? timh 08-26-05, 09:57 AM How do you feel about the library? timh 08-26-05, 10:43 AM Do you get totally absorbed with all of the books and subjects? Do you lose track of time? or Do you think it's too busy and feel overwhelmed? Do you rush in and rush out? Uminchu 08-26-05, 10:45 AM I could spend all day at the library. I love 'em! Deeperblue 08-26-05, 10:52 AM love the library. I walk in and feel this sense of complete calm. The library represents a world of thouhts and ideas, knowledge and dreams. I can day dream and not feel that i must explain that far off look... There at the library, I have spent many happy summer days while growing up. I introduced my kids as well and also particpated as a parent and volunteer in many story hour hours. only minor problem for me is my allergy to the dust and so i bluster a bit... thanks timh for reminding me of this wonderful, untapped resourse. Now that i am in a new town I will try to rekindle this lost love of libraries. casper 08-26-05, 11:40 AM I too love the library. I went there alot when i was a kid for good and bad reasons. I was tutored there for some classes, so I was not happy about that. But on the other hand, I went to get books and such, sot it was a good reason. Plus if I get one of those study rooms i am good to go all day long. Otherwise its great people watching!! haha Sorceress Pol 08-26-05, 11:53 AM Libraries used to be my second home. Then I got a job and discovered Barnes and Noble and Borders. Books, food, and comfy chairs in the same spot. It's like heaven. :faint: karennerak 08-26-05, 12:00 PM Oh yes! I love Libraries... They are peaceful and Quiet.... until someone starts tapping a pen or snorts and sniffing, with sinus problems... etc etc Then i'm driven out of the Library, because i can't stand the irratating noises any longer!!!! Agggghhhhhh!!!!! Karen  Imnapl 08-26-05, 12:25 PM I love libraries and never met a librarian I didn't like. I started being a library helper at age nine. timh 08-26-05, 12:37 PM When I go to the library, I try to tell myself, "You're just going in to pickup the book on hold.". Then something catches my eye on the new release shelf and before I know it I'm searching the online database or walking around the Non-fiction shelves. Good grief! The other day I bounced from the Chilton's Repair manual for 1996 Honda Civic to Area 51 to Psychology Today back issues. What did I learn from this? 1.) It's not advised to perform any air conditioning work on a 1996 Civic, unless you are properly trained or bodily harm may result. :( 2.) A Nevada law inforcement officer tried to pass off homemade UFO debris as real material from spacecraft. Based on the pictures, my 7 year old could have made something better than that guy. :) 3.) Everyone has a disorder.:D lostdog65 08-26-05, 01:17 PM Loved the library when I was a kid. Got lost in all the books. My mother would have to come find me, oblivious to all else, and drag me home. As I got older, I'd walk or ride my bike the 2-3 miles to the library and disappear for hours during the summer. I do the same thing at home (and work sometimes) with a good book. Just getting lost in the story is a refuge for me. My wife didn't understand it but now does as both my children (especially my son) will be lost to the worlds in the pages of a book. Reading and writing are places for me to escape the world and the problems of ADHD. Eric Emma S 08-26-05, 01:42 PM I really can't believe I'm the first to say this,I hate libraries, and hate books, can't tolerate it or them. :faint: timh 08-26-05, 03:13 PM I really can't believe I'm the first to say this,I hate libraries, and hate books, can't tolerate it or them. :faint: I am interested in why you feel this way. Do you not like to read? Is it difficult to read due to racing thoughts or a wandering mind? I used to not like to read (pre-diagnosis), because I could never stay focused. Now that I take medication, I can read and remember much better. sgolden5374 08-26-05, 05:52 PM OK, this is a subject near and dear to my heart. I love libraries. I love books. I love reading (anything and everything). I even love the way libraries smell! So, for years I have been knocking around the idea to go back and give college another try and really try to stick it out and get a degree. While I was discussing what I wanted to be when I grew up with my husband he said very matter-of-factly that I should do something with books since I love them more than breathing. Now I am looking at going back to school for a degree in library sciences. That way I can have my cake and eat it too! sosninity 08-26-05, 11:18 PM I felt so at home in libraries that I became a librarian. A generally wise fellow library employee once theorized that people who work in libraries have very disordered lives, and so crave order in the work place. Her own home was so messy that her teenage daughter was ashamed to bring friends home. And she would read mystery books in bed at night, reading only every other page so she didn't have to roll over. Once, after reading some literature that had come across her desk, she said out loud, "It's kind of surprising when you're reading about how to deal with difficult people at work, and you realize that you're one of them." She was/is a wonderful person. To the person who admits to hating libraries. I am glad you spoke up. All this nice mushyness was almost a bit much. And when I was a kid, I refused to read the books my mother brought home from the library. I only read comic books. :) Imnapl 08-27-05, 12:42 AM A generally wise fellow library employee once theorized that people who work in libraries have very disordered lives, and so crave order in the work place.I recognized this in myself long before I knew I had ADHD. I am passionate about books and proud of it! :soapbox: If my husband suggests that I have too many books, I just smile and say I don't have enough bookshelves. English was my favourite subject in school and still is. :D Libraries are great places to meet interesting people. When asked which famous people I would most like to have lunch with, I name authors. When my mother first learned to read, she thought she had died and gone to heaven. As a child, a book was a precious gift and now, people who know me give me books. I spent much of the first grade standing in the corner. Fortunately, the "corner" had a large nook where the teacher kept reading materials. My reading grades improved dramatically through the year. :p Necking in the stacks of a university library; what a turn on. ;) A book is portable entertainment, requires no electrical power and is a great icebreaker in waiting rooms. Dreams of visiting villages in England where people purchase old, beautifully bound books by the inch to go with their decor!! When my husband first met my family, he thought we were "weird" because we read books while we watched t.v.; I hadn't even noticed! :o Mushy?? :D pembroke 08-27-05, 12:45 AM love the library. love books. love barnes and noble (as someone said earlier: books, food, coffee and comfy chairs, all in the same building. better yet - no tv!) have so many books at home that i keep running out of shelf space.....and i just bought some more books! Nova 08-27-05, 02:13 AM Y'all should see the Barnes and Nobles in Baltimore...right up front and center with the Inner Harbor..How's that for a 'Great Cuppa Joe'???? I used to go to the one in Medina when I used to live in Ohio. I loved it much better than Borders. I have a frustrating habit though...I earmark pages.. and highlight them, to boot..in ALL books !!! No one is able to 'borrow' them, without commenting, on how they're unable to read them properly, lol !! I LOVE all reading material !! Nova so_impatient 08-27-05, 03:02 AM all day...no....i like to look up topics im interested in i look forever for books then i take them out and never read them... i hate reading... but i need to go there to do homework/study or else i cant concentrate... but to write an essay, i go somewhere weird, like the middle of the hall where ppl walk by, it builds the creative energy wuahahahah Gourmet 08-27-05, 08:30 AM I love to read and I buy books often....but avoid the library. I get confused and lost and there is no way I can use it for study or reading. So when I go, the first thing I do is ask for librarian assistance to get me over the stress of getting lost. But for some reason the bookstores old and new don't bother me...maybe because they are smaller and assistance is easily accessable? There is sometimes familiar disorganization... color, books are stacked on tables, and gee, what a candy store! I know it's like comparing apples to oranges in many ways in terms of reference material and selection.. but it makes for a delightful trip and I love the coffee shops...the music..and the atmosphere. ~gourmet~ timh 08-27-05, 10:48 AM I used to go to the one in Medina when I used to live in Ohio. In Westlake, OH, behind the Promenade Shops, they built a fake downtown called Crocker Park. On one of the main street corners they have a huge Barnes and Nobel. Two gigantic floors with chairs and a Starbucks. If I only had a whole day to burn! :D Nova - I live in Wellington, just west of Medina. meadd823 08-27-05, 03:29 PM I enjoy the library and am some one who will enter a library to get a book on a subject I am researching and come out three hours later with an arm load of books, and four more topic of interest to research. I don't do regular book stores is they cost $$$$$, for an impulsive book buyer Barns and Noble are to be avoided unless I have an accountibility partner with me. Preferably an impatient accountablility partner who doesn't do books!!!!! I like places where they sell second hand books or have book sales. Our library had one of those book sales to raise money for new books. I went both days. The last day of the sale four hours before it was to end, they had all the books you could stuff in a plastic grocery bag for $5.00. I got 32 books of various sizes shoved into the bag, which ripped before I was able to reach my car.....gee wonder why?????? Cheap plastic bags!!!!!!!!! Linguist 08-27-05, 06:07 PM I joined a new library recently and managed to lose the first book I borrowed on a train. I used to spend most of my study periods in the library at university as home was too far. I can spend about half a day there quite happily but I think any longer and I keep on taking breaks and going for a hot drink or a walk. Andrew 08-27-05, 06:26 PM I used to DEVOUR books by the stack-ful...now I rarely have the focus to finish an article in the newspaper. Sigh. Scattered 08-28-05, 12:58 AM I like libraries (but love Barnes N Nobles type books stores even more!:D ). I spent many full days in a library in college (usually the day before the project was due!). I'm not sure I could do the all day thing anymore. In some ways I'm more restless now and less inclined to sit still for that long than I was back then. Not sure why that is. I have more trouble staying focused for that long although books help me focus if they're intersting. Maybe just age catching up with my coping techniques. Scattered brandilyn 08-28-05, 01:29 AM I love to read, unfortunatly my brain dosnt!!LOL!!!!I can only hold my attention for a couple of days or so.Short stories are good for me.LOL!!!! Nova 08-28-05, 03:55 AM In Westlake, OH, behind the Promenade Shops, they built a fake downtown called Crocker Park. On one of the main street corners they have a huge Barnes and Nobel. Two gigantic floors with chairs and a Starbucks. If I only had a whole day to burn! :D Nova - I live in Wellington, just west of Medina. I know that one !!! I've only been, to the Borders, there, though. Nova Boxer19 08-28-05, 08:27 AM I used to love to read but now I can't stay interested (or awake) long enough to read 5 pages. Hopefully that will change soon. Struggling 08-28-05, 07:08 PM I had to stop going to the library cause I would literally leave w/ no less than 10 books and they would always ALWAYS be overdue! But to answer the question....yes, I get totally absorbed...and bookstores as well...though not to the same extent relvinnian 08-28-05, 07:30 PM I have spent SO many days in the library, utterly indulging my dreaming impulses. I used to go to the library with lists of stuff to research, read, look into, and come home having accomplished nothing or very little. I always found some distraction to bring home with me though! :D pembroke 08-28-05, 07:54 PM if i don't have a book to read, i'll read my candy wrapper, cereal box, rice package..... our library is now online, so i can renew my books and see when they are due back. and i can even browse the stacks and order books so i can just pop in and pick them up! my son worked there as a page, so the librarians know me. joy! Crazygirl79 08-28-05, 10:01 PM I'd live in the library if I could.....lol livinginchaos 08-28-05, 10:09 PM Me me me! I love finding a comfy cozy chair and cuddling in it with a good book at BN or Borders. I used to go to an independent bookstore just a few blocks from me, but it closed :( Libraries are ok, but they don't have the comfy cozy chairs . .. . Imnapl 08-29-05, 01:12 AM Libraries are ok, but they don't have the comfy cozy chairs . .. . Mine does. :D bcaddkid 08-29-05, 05:04 AM ^ya so does my school's....and they're the chillin' spot for reading, sipping on coffee, and picking up members of the opposite/same sex (whatever floats your boat...). They're not a good study area, but if you're just going to be seen...lol only in college do you go to the library to "be seen"... I could spend all day at chapters, but my school library feels like a prison. The main downtown library is amazing though. Built to be a post-modern roman amphitheatre, it's so nice and so well organized, lots of glass, very clean, and if I get bored, I can go watch pro skaters session the handrails outside in the public square attached to the library. It's great. Oh, and there's a secret observation deck that's closed to the public that you can kinda get to if you know how...I really should study there more lol. I love books. They're way better than movies. I can't sit through a movie, but give me a book, and I'll kill it in 2 hours. 45 minutes if it's written by that hack Tom Clancy.I devour books of all kind. I love books. I can go months without reading anything but assigned readings, and then read 10 books in 12 days. Man, books are great. srhtinker 08-30-05, 07:24 PM I really love to read. When I was a young teenager, I would call a good book on Friday night heaven. My first chapter book was "Superfudge,"by Judy Blume.I love to go when I have time, but some visits are frusterating. I could be in there a couple of hours and not absorbe anything. Elizabeth_146 09-06-06, 04:20 PM The one thing that most people know least about me is the fact that I am a total nerd. I love the library, bookstores, and the wealth of information found in all of them. I can get totally lost and easily spend 5-6 hours or more reading various topics. In fact, that is where I am going today once I am out of work. SB_UK 09-06-06, 05:16 PM first job (voluntary) (@school)- librarian - Dewey eyed, bushy tailed. sb. I think that it may have been about placing knowledge into a structure. sammyanne1 09-06-06, 07:18 PM I actually have dreams about books. Have been in love with them since I started reading. I once had a fabulous dream that there was an escalator up to a huge attic and when I got there it was a large, quiet library and I read for the rest of the dream. sigh, great times Ichpuchtli 09-07-06, 04:23 AM I dunno it is just to quite, I feel under pressure to be on my best behaviour there. I like to be my happy loud sorta self. lucy2 09-07-06, 04:29 PM I love libraries and bookstores and I have spent the most of the day at Books A Million before. It seems strange that I would love books so much since I have such a hard time concentrating enough to read one but I do. dormammau2008 09-07-06, 04:46 PM i got 12 books out at this time injoying them lol likes to read as well drom runinl8 09-07-06, 05:13 PM I don't get to go to the Library (ever) but I could spend all day in Books-A-Million. They even have to comfy chairs someone else talked about. Absolutely in love with that store. AnneM 09-09-06, 09:02 AM I've always loved the library. I can barely read a whole book but I just love the atmosphere. I go in and automatically I feel this overwhelming sense of calm. Aaaah. Librarians are another story....no offense to the librarians here (who I think would be a bit more understanding) but the librarians in our town shame you when you bring a book back late >> eeek! They are little old ladies who say things loudly, like (in my case), "You know this book is TEN days late?!!?" |
