Uminchu 08-27-05, 11:36 PM A couple days ago, as I was getting ready to drive off in my car, I remembered that the other day I had been driving around with my emergency brake on, so I had better make sure to check it this time.
I remembered the last time I had forgotten, my wife was like "honey, not again!" The truth of the matter is, I do it fairly often. I have driven around for an hour, then thought, gee, the acceleration on this car is lousy. Maybe I need to take it into the shop ... then looked down and seen the emergency brake on...
Then I started thinking about all the other absent-minded doofus things I do, like forgetting if I have washed my hair, and ending up washing it 2 times, or stepping out of the shower still covered in soap, etc.
So I was thinking all these thoughts, and then when I pulled into the driveway, I looked down and sure enough, the emergency brake was on! :faint:
LOL...your story made me laugh...I've done similar things.
stori813 08-28-05, 01:11 AM Uminchu I hear ya.
No matter how organized or how much I do things in a routine.
Stuff like that still happen's to me also.
And thank goodness I'm not the only one with really clean hair. ;) LOL
brandilyn 08-28-05, 01:26 AM Yes,I know.I do things like that all the time, mine is boiling water though.....Im so glad we have a smoke alarm!!!
whiteraven 08-28-05, 01:49 AM I get annoyed when I forget basic stuff, like brushing my teeth. I keep supplies at work just in case I forget some hygene step that others do on autopilot. (sigh)
But it is all about figuring out how to do it our way, right? So, for me, keeping two sets of basic hygene stuff is normal! :D (note clean shiny teeth)
herekittykitty 08-28-05, 09:18 AM It's all in how you look at it--you're very consistent! In today's rapidly-changing-information-age-internationalization-recession-(feel free to tack on another overused Japanese adjective here) society, consistency has to be worth something, right?
Who knows what'll happen to the postal system, Horie-mon or the Koizumi Cabinet? No one. But we can count on you to drive with that brake on, day in and day out! (g)
adhdxyz 08-28-05, 09:35 AM I am right up there with the rest of you when it comes to forgetting the same ole things over and over.
For instance, when I got up this morning, I went to let the dogs out and I heard this loud talking out in our backyard. Our yard is pretty big and I didn't see anyone, so I closed the door and started to make my daily breakfast of eggs with cheese (that I always do prior to checking the add forum. I am sooooooo predictable.)
Then one of the dogs started scratching on the door to come in so I opened the back door. Instead of loud talking, I heard loud music. I didn't see anyone in either of our neighbors yard either. Hmmm...So I closed the door.
As I closed the door, I remembered something and had to laugh.
I (for the millioneth time) left the radio on out by the pool all night. We had been swimming yesterday and we bring a radio out and plug it into the pool pump plug. Once again my son and I came in without bringing the radio. It must have been blaring all night because we usually have it up fairly loud when we are swimming.
The funny thing is that my ADD husband was out in the backyard atleast 10 times from the time we finished swimming to the time he put his motorcycle away and he didn't remember to bring it in either. He had to have heard it.
Hopefully it doesn't electricute me one time when I go out there to unplug it with wet grassy feet. Maybe then I'll remember to bring it in.
Uminchu 08-28-05, 05:36 PM You're right, at least I can take comfort in the fact that I can be consistent about something -- anything. :)
Another thing I am consistent about: On any given Sunday night (like this one, for instance...), you are pretty much guaranteed to find me pulling an all-nighter for a Monday deadline.

From what I've read you can also take comfort that you have a modicum of success. Your married, have a son, your self-employed, you have an interesting career.
Your also aware of the behavior problems which bother you like procrastination.
Your doing something about it as evidenced by your quest for information via these forums.
And you have the resources and intelligence to do something about it.
I read in another post of yours you were considering a part time assistant. That would not be a bad idea. When you work for yourself by yourself it's not to hard to drift into lala land.
Just having someone else there changes your motivational state especially when your paying them.
I was self-employed, most of the work was tedious and boring. The times I hired a helper for the day I accomplished a lot more.
And if anything about absentminded it can be humorous after the fact. I had my truck towed in Manhattan. When I came out I asked someone if they saw what happened to my truck.
They told me It was towed. "didn't you see them". I was getting something out of the cab as they were hooking it up.

Thanks for the kind words, Mike. It's true, my life is good and I'm happy. I'm in a good place in a lot of ways. I'm also very scared that I'm going to blow it all. And the procrastination is what is going to do it.
You know how rock climbers hammer petons into the rock as they go up? Then if they fall, they only fall down to the last peton they pounded in. I wish I could drive a couple petons into my life right now.

Thanks for the advice. I'm seriously considering it. I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to solve this thing on my own.

That's a good one! I have to give it to you: you do seem to have the best procrastination and airhead stories! :D
sosninity 08-29-05, 09:08 PM Fortunately the car I have now has a very tight parking brake, and I can't go anywhere without taking it off.
Such was not always the case.

The parking brake on my car is very loose.
Such was not always the case. I have kind of loosened it up. :D

Such was not always the case. I have kind of loosened it up. :DYep, I know that one well! On my last car I was always forgetting to release the parking break and generally didn't figure it out until I got out of the car and smelled the overheated brake material. Fortunately, my new car doesn't require that I use the emergency brake to keep it from rolling away (it even turns the lights on and off by itself -- another common problem), and it insists I lock the door with a key. Leave it to Volvo to come up with a car so safe even an ADDer can't screw up too badly. Now if I could just teach it to help me find the keys to drive it and remind me to actually fasten my child's safety seat after I put her in it :o (at least my older daughter is getting good at sounding that alarm!).

That's a neat idea about the keys. May I ask, does the car have keyless entry (a remote, for example)?
When I first bought the truck I have now, I thought that keyless entry was the best ADD feature a vehicle could have (easy external locking/unlocking, whether by remote or entered code). Biometric entry and ignition would be a neat feature to see (even if you have ADD, if you lose your fingers or your head, you have serious issues).

um, stanzen, have you ever thought that (um maybe:eyebrow: ) you have a bird in there (some place) in need of assistance:foot: this could be a real emergency:eek:
minn306 08-30-05, 11:22 AM That is to funny Rita..............but maybe he does need to check to see if there is an innocent little birdie crying out for help!
We only had my Expedition for a couple of months when we had to haul a trailer with it. There was this burning smell that I kept asking my husband about. He said that it was the trailer. I made the comment that I thought the smell was coming from my truck. He said there was no way that it was coming from the truck. Which of course completely freaked me out because it was a brand new truck. When we stopped at the gas station, I went in to get something to drink. When I got back into the truck, my daughter says "hey mom guess what we are not suppose to tell you? Dad left the brake on so that is what the smell was. But we are not suppose to tell you that"
Yes I still like to bring that little "mistake" up to him :D
Deeperblue 08-30-05, 11:31 AM ok, how bout this:
the other night while at camp and when T. came home from fishing (it was pouring:rolleyes: ), I remember asking T if he left any windows open (my car of course) he said that he would never need to open a window---since it WAS RAINING--- (hello).
I went to sleep, confident in this fact...
guess what.
of course he does not have add ?:D
