View Full Version : Being tired
william tell 09-05-05, 07:44 AM Do any of you suffer from this ,and what the heck is it ?
You work all day and are fine ,come home and as long as you stay on your feet ,your fine ,sit down in a chair or worse a recliner and get very sleepy ,tired ?
how about just the act sitting down or reclining and getting sleepy ,tired ,wanting to sleep even if well rested ?
william tell 09-05-05, 12:02 PM I did a search and found quite a few responses towards this, reason I asked was because I had a dream about talking to my uncle and he was saying he was just diagnosed ADD ,I asked what precipatated the doc. visit and he replied because he was tired all the time ,sit down and fall asleep-just a dream .
I'm that way alot ,I can get a full nights rest ,drink coffee ,and relax and the next thing ,I'm ready for a nap .
Seems as long as I stay on my feet ,I can go and go like the energizer bunny.but definatly don't sit down and relax
it's all over then .So messed up !
brandilyn 09-05-05, 12:02 PM It happens to me all the time but I have rugrats runnin' around so therefor I cannot sit!!!LOL!!!!Back when my first was born I would fall asleep sitting up.I remember how it would scare me when I was startled back to reality.I use to feel soooooo guilty.
wheresmykeys 09-05-05, 09:21 PM that happens to me a lot. I can be completely hyper, super charged and excited and moving like crazy...sit me down for 5 mins and Im out.
The biggest issue this is for me is that being a college student how can I sit down a read a book? If I let myself calm down and relax enough to focus on a book, I fall asleep.
Ive helped fix this a bit by sorta of power sleeping for 20 mins(if you're going to try that, make sure its about 20 mins..if you have more time, 1.5hrs or 3hrs. It works best at those intervals because of sleep cycles. If you sleep 40 mins for example, you'll be more groggy than you were when you started). That gives me just enough energy to get through a bit of the book but I have to change places or positions about everything minute to stay awake after that.
It used to drive my parents crazy because sometimes I'd be like the dead and be sleeping in the middle of the day not able to function well..and then my friend would call me up and that would make me excited and there I am full of energy, alive and well. They sometimes though I was just trying to get out of something but thats not it at all.
The wierdest part though is that I can fall asleep at about anytime if Im sitting down, but it takes me at least 2 hours to fall asleep at night. How does that work?
Scattered 09-05-05, 10:28 PM Yeah, I go pretty much non stop. If I should down and read my kids a story; however, there is an excellent chance that I'll start nodding off in the middle of it.
Think I read somewhere the comparison that it's like a car without first gear -- you're either gunning it or parking it!:p

Yep, I get this way, too.
Sitting in an office, by myself, all day....hard to stay awake sometimes.
And in the evening, when the kids have gone to bed, and my wife and I finally have some time to sit and spend some time together alone...I suddenly drop off. It makes her so mad. I can't blame her.
ChemicalMethod 09-06-05, 12:53 AM I have this same problem to. I can go onto the bus wide awake, but leave it almost asleep. At work if theres nothing to do around the kitchen i get really lazy and just don't wanna work anymore. Its like i have a really hard time switching to "drive" when i've been knocked down to 2nd. My boss asked me the other day why I never relax at work, I told him its because i like to keep myself busy when really its because I don't wanna get lazy on the job and not wanna work. This has worked to be my advantage though, as i am being trained as a kitchen manager now because of my "great" work ethic, I'm also the highest paid person in the kitchen and some have been there for 2 years +. Guess adhd is finally starting to work my way :D
HighFunctioning 09-06-05, 01:08 AM This is one of the bigger issues for me at work. If I am to be productive, I need to:
* Basically know what it is I need to do before I get to work (so I can plan it out in my mind while driving).
* Be working continously all day (or at least doing something, even if it isn't work), without slowdown.
* Be doing something interesting enough to keep me focused.
I absolutely cannot deal with the slowness of dealing with other people. I get very restless when I don't have anything else to do. After I've calmed down, my productivity goes down the tubes for the rest of the day.
Scatterbrainz 09-06-05, 07:55 PM I'm that way a lot too. As soon as I sit down, journal, or anything, and even at work I get sleepy. But otherwise and I'm up and moving and hyper as well and can't stop moving!!! On the otherhand, I do alternate into sleepy mode into restless hyperactivity mode at work a lot during the day as well and at home. I have spurts of this througout the day. I can even get a second wind at night as well after being sleepy, and then I go into energizer bunny mode as well. I finally seem to just fall over and sleep about 2 am in the morning though.
I find myself in sleepy mode sleeping with journals, pens, remote controls, and anything you can think of in my hands or sleeping sitting up at times as well. It's goofy. I've had the problem a lot of my life too.
Just this morning, I got up to get the kids off to school after a full nights sleep. I got them off and was back at home by 7:45,,,, I decided I was going to clean my house but wanted to watch a 30 minute show on TV first and don't you know it was after 1 when I woke back up. I don't know how I can sleep so much but yes all it takes is me sitting down and I am out like a light,,,, unless I am on the PC or it is actually bed time,,,, then I have problems calming my head enough to go to sleep.
meadd823 09-07-05, 02:00 AM Heyyy you all are playing my song. I think thinking about work makes me sleepy but at night I can't sleep....never connected it with being in a chair as opposed to laying down!!!!!!!
I do have a lot of energy once I get started I want to go anf go until task done but if I stop that's it "show's over"!!!!!!!
stori813 09-07-05, 02:52 AM All my favorite TV shows are programmed into the VCR.
In case I fall asleep.
My minds a busy place and it keeps me going.
But once I stop to just sit down I'm falling asleep.
Its those long boring commercial breaks.
I'll fall asleep for about 5 minutes then just start going again.
Freaks everyone out how I just start talking when 2 seconds ago I was snoring.
And before I sat down I wasn't even feeling tired.
Gourmet 09-07-05, 08:26 AM Hi William Tell. A couple of things you might want to consider looking into...
~high sugar or carbohydrate consumption can contribute to sleepiness after eating
~many medications make this a problem
~sleep apnea..if you do a lot of snoring at night this can be a symptom
~lack of exercise.....we all know that it's the answer to everything :D

stanzen 09-07-05, 11:18 AM W T-
My energy levels are quite uneven, as well. Stimulent meds even it out for me, remarkably. I don't get hyper, I don't burn out during the day, and I'm good and tired at bedtime (usually).
In addition to what has been mentioned here, there are a couple of other easy things to check out with a physical exam and blood tests.
Hypoglycemia- you'll need to eat frequent, small meals.
Thyroid problems- anyone can have this.
Hepatitits C (chronic)- that is, if you've every been at risk for this blood borne pathogen.
Remember, if you tell the doc you're having problems with fatigue, they'll tell you everyone has problems with fatigue so stop bellyaching. Physicians really don't seem to get this symptom because it is very nonspecific (and because a doc needs to be a sleepless workaholic to make it through a typical internship--- you think you're tired?).
Ignore this attitude and insist on the tests.
Cheers
ms_sunshine 09-07-05, 01:29 PM You sit down, you drink coffee (a stimulant, I believe, unless you're drinking decaf), and THEN you get tired? LOL I'm laughing WITH, I swear.
I was lucky, pre-dx, I didn't self medicate with anything stronger than excessive amounts of cherry coke and chocolate. I couldn't sleep til I had several cans/bags of each. I am very lucky that I didn't develop diabetes, it was that excessive.
I guess I adapted without realizing it? I scheduled my classes so that I had time for naps midday. I routinely regenerated this way pretty much every day. On the days when I knew I would be up late from my work schedule, or a late class, I would make sure I didn't have an early class or appointments scheduled. This worked well for me til after college, when I was married and had children... What a shock when they didn't seem to appreciate my way of planning, and expected me to become (cringing) a DAY person.
HighFunctioning 09-07-05, 07:20 PM I guess I'll post something else as well...
I experience extreme burnout (and when I mean burnout, I mean "coming home and staring at the wall" burnout) when required to deal with tedium or to listen to others for extended periods of time. By tedium, I mean what I mostly do at work. I think it's a combination of being overstimulated externally (sensory: auditory, visual (light)) and underaroused mentally (not enough adrenalin to make my brain work). Being in this state, the only way of getting out of it is to take a long break (several hours). I sometimes leave work early (if I feel I can get away with it). Other times, I will just sit there and do nothing (like I could get anything done anyway...).
When I mean burnout, I mean feeling tired but not being able to go to sleep. I even have trouble focusing my eyes on words to read.

Yes! I get like this. I'm "too tired to sleep." I can't even play video games.
The only thing I can do in this state is dim the lights and watch a mindless video, like Steven Segal or The Matrix, and veg.
If I don't need to function any more that day, a couple shots of Chivas Regal can also do wonders...
meadd823 09-07-05, 10:52 PM Chivas Regal can also do wonders...
???? Helps you sleep does it make it harder to awaken the next day?????
Uminchu 09-07-05, 11:18 PM ???? Helps you sleep does it make it harder to awaken the next day?????
It doesn't help me sleep -- it helps me play video games :)
I actually don't like to drink right before sleeping, because I will usually wake up during the night when the alchohol wears off.
Last night I did the Chivas thing, in fact. Two fingers on the rocks while watching Nine Lives. Slept like a baby and woke up feeling good.
ms_sunshine 09-10-05, 03:49 PM When I have those evenings where my body still feels like it's racing long after I have put the kids to bed, and gotten the house settled for the evening...it gets very frustrating. I tried yoga, and WOW, did it work. I was practically asleep, and my body felt so much better.
Maybe this could benefit you? They have video tapes of this for sale for beginners which are pretty basic. You could also check and see if they are carried at your local public library. :)

Wow what a concept----do you aime for the one in the middle?????....I can have a couple of drinks every now and then but with my tendance to addiction I avoid alcohol intake on a regular basis....I have found melatonin help me not only fall asleep I can remain asleep through out the night with no morning "hang over"!!!!!
Uminchu 09-11-05, 08:53 PM Wow what a concept----do you aime for the one in the middle?????
It kind of gets me unwound enough to play a video game and release some of the tension. Or go for a walk, or whatever.
But if I'm totally burnt, literally all I can do is veg. When I am really bad I can't understand conversation or drive a car. If I have a drink I still can't drive a car :), but I can understand what my wife is saying to me instead of just watching her lips move.
I have found melatonin help me not only fall asleep I can remain asleep through out the night with no morning "hang over"!!!!!
As I said, I don't use alcohol to fall asleep because I'll usually wake up in the night. But how easy is it to obtain melatonin? I tried getting it for jetlag once a few years ago, but was told I needed a doctor's prescription.

In the USA, it is over-the-counter. It is very easy to get. So is 5-HTP.

Thanks for the info! I will certainly look for it on my next trip to the states -- and will look for it again here in Japan as well.

If you can't find it in Japan, you can probably buy it online.
(I am not advocating the store found at the link I provided, just showing the import restrictions).
Linguist 09-12-05, 04:19 PM I've been doing lots of stuff over the last week which has gotten in the way of my plan to organise all my stuff and putting a day aside to sort out the mess in my room, write down everything I need to be organised on A3 sheets of paper using mind maps etc. I would have got some done on Saturday and some more done today, only a friend rung up to see if I wanted to go out for the day on Saturday. We were out for 12 hours and I already had plans to do something on the Sunday which also involved being out for 12 hours. I spent nearly all of Monday in bed recovering and will again be out for part of Tuesday and all of Wednesday and I only have this week left as I start a new job next week that I have to travel 80 minutes each way to until I get somewhere to live down there. I'd class Saturday as mis-spending the Energy Budget as I have to wait until I get metaphorically paid again by my body by catching up on sleep first.
Lunacie 09-12-05, 06:42 PM Sleep? What's that?
I don't have insomnia because it doesn't actually bother me, but I do find it difficult to fall asleep. I leave a low-wattage light on all night because I read until I fall asleep, and if/when I wake up in the night I just read some more until I fall asleep again.
No problem since I've been sleeping alone for a few years, but when I was still married my ex didn't like the light on and his snoring kept waking me up, and then I couldn't get back to sleep. Yeesh.
My former s-i-l does the sitting down and falling asleep thing. That's just one of the reasons I think he also has ADD and my poor granddaughter got a double-genetic-dose. :(
