Hi Digit :)!

First off, have you backed up thr files that you need to keep? Burnt them to CD? How about your emails, any licenses you need for software you've bought/downloaded, IE Favorites??? If you haven't yet - do it now, then test that you can read the disk!

Once you are satisfied that you can wipe the hard drive and start again, you need to change the 'Boot Order' in the BIOS of your machine to start from CD (you can usually enter the Bios as the PeeCee is starting by pressing Del, F1, F2 or another key or combination - it often says on screen eg. 'press del to enter setup' or similar).

How recent is your machine, what type of hard disk does it boot from - recent SATA drives need to have an installation floppy disk with the driver on before XP can see the hard disk to install to! Older IDE/ATA drives will be fine.

This could take some time to explain all the details so I'll link you to http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm#b (words to print out) and http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/windows/instructions/reformat.htm (screenshots). Read these thoroghly before you start - any questions - get back to us ;)!

Cheers and good luck,

Andy.

If it keeps trying to boot into the old windows setup,it's because your hard drive is being read first before the cd drive, and cue back to satrows post on BIOS. :D

Booting sequence should be:
1-CDD/DVDD
2-HDD
3-Exetera-other bootable devices if any (eg,FDD)

The CD Drive has to be #1 in the sequence to make sure it's read before the hard drive,no need to change the sequence back if you're not prone to leaving cd/dvdroms in the drive at shutdown.

If it still doesn't boot, the copy might also be a dud, this happens a lot with botched linux CDR copies, generally from being burnt too fast.

loads of sh%t in it...
Now you've described windows, what about the rest of the problem? :P :D

First, why are you reinstalling windows just to get rid of all of the crap?
You can uninstall all of the software you don't use anymore and use Disk Cleanup to get rid of just about everything else. So, you may be going the long way to get this done.

Second, if you must you must. To get your system to boot from the CD if it doesn't automatically ask you to when the CD is inserted sometimes you have to Press a function key such as F2 or F12 (those are the commons ones) to bring up a menu to select a boot device.

Third, Is your system built from scratch or is it a brand name? If it's a brand name (Dell, IBM, Sony, Gateway, Micron, AlienWare) it came with a restore CD. If you put the restore CD in it should boot, prompt you through the whole thing of wiping your drive, format the drive, install windows and any software that came with and you're off and running.

If none of them ideas work. PM me and I'll see if I can help you directly.

No point in spending Hundreds or thousands of pounds on new hardware though if it won't be used, although I do agree with you,the Mac is awesome. :D
As Apple are to start working with x86 architecture,it might not be long before they have OSX as a PC release,I actually know people who have got it running on P4s already.

Hey Lise, try holding down a key/tapping a key rapidly as you start the PeeCee - you ought to be able to fool it into thinking there's a keyboard error - it should then give you a 'boot normally or bios setup' option on screen ...

Then you will have to guess what key it is. You should have a screen that appears immediately after you turn the computer on (well before the Windows XP splash screen). Lets just say you have to press the right key right after you turn your computer on. Usually, the key is either F1, F2, F10, or DEL. It could be ESC, I guess. It's trial and error. Expect to reboot several times.

Let me ask this. Does the computer try to access the CD drive when starting up? Does the drive start spinning up right before where the Windows XP splash screen would normally come on? This will tell you if your boot order (fixed by going into the BIOS screen as mentioned before) is correct.

Have you ever booted this particular CD before?

Windows XP will not give you an option to go into DOS and format like the other previous versions of windows did. There are ways around this but most people boot with the windows xp, go to install windows and then it will give you the option to partion and reformat.

Sounds like you're trying to install windows home basic, or SP1, and you have the next version (sp2) which is standard now.

One thing you could do is wipe the partition clean, and then re-install windows on that partition.

-I totally wiped out my entire HD.
-Reinstalled WinXP from scratch.
-Refused to download Willie G's updates, and will not do so anymore.
-Installed a specific shield for my computer and internet browser that works 24/7, whether I turn it on, or not. *It's unavailable from stores, kiddos (0;
-Installed Ewido Security Suite in Conjunction to McAfee Virus protection.
-No more problems with WinXP

At least not for me.

In my opinion, and I'm no PC Geek, I think my biggest issues had to do with those automatic updates and their conflicting with other programs on my PC.

So don't run with what I'm saying here, because it might be more of a detriment for you, than benificial.

You are exposing yourself to a lot of viruses, trojans and hackers by not updating your windows. Just letting you know. I happen to be fairly knowledgable on the subject as my last job as a PC security consultant. Also having ewido and mcafee wont give you extra protection. Choose on or the other.

''Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD.
Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered.''

I think the problem lies here, If you installed service pack2 after the WinXp and the WinXp disk you have does not have service pack2 on it. You will get the error that your version installed is newer then the version you are trying to reinstall.

Try unistalling Service pack 2 first
I hope this helps.

Some people think I have an uncanny psychic like ability to fix computers. (Little do they know that I'm actually an android! :D)I don't mean to insult your psychic means of fixing computers, but did you know what in Windows XP 6-9 mos. of regular use will corrupt the registry to a point where it is irreperable. This results in odd system behavior for no apparent reason. Also when Windows 'uninstalls' a program it doesn't completely uninstall it, there are still bits of leftover data on your computer.

That's why you should do a windows re-install. I recently did a windows re-install because of quirky behavior in my computer, I recommend everyone to do it.

While I have always been a big advocate of a fresh install [any OS], that isn't always the most practical way to go. I have had machines that would function correctly for years, others that I would have to reformat twice a month. The difference is on the computers that would go on forever, I would lock them down to where the user couldn't install any garbage.
With that being said, I typically reformat my machine about every 6-9 months mostly because I still love trying out new garbage! I use to keep a backup copy of a fresh install with all of the service patches and critical applications installed but I just haven't gotten around it it lately.
