Before ADD was even on my radar screen of possible problems preventing my funtionality, I had a strong desire to find any means of improving my focus and memory. There were a couple of choices in front of me which I could have taken, but the practice of meditation won my heart. The main problem for me was to find the right place to learn. I had already bought a couple of books on the subject, but felt that finding classes with an experienced guide would provide best results.

Well, someone must have secretly been reading my mind, for I did find such a place where I could go often. It is a religious organization whose main purpose is to teach proper meditation. Almost from the beginning, I instinctively knew great changes would come my way if I'd only stick to the lessons.

Progress was slow, but now, 16 years later, I feel like a completely different person. The peace and the focus that has developed within me has served as my life boat through some very turbulant times. I probably wouldn't be sitting here writing out these words if not for meditation. It was almost as if it had come to me as opposed as me finding it, as I was largely unaware of what it was and how it could help.

There are various forms of meditation, but I believe the best practice of us ADDers is completely silent practice. At the same time, you can learn to completely relax your body and mind of all the tensions built up from the outside world. Then, there are techniques that help you to focus attention on your breath, which will help your entire being to relax and let go even more. If done correctly, in a short time (with regular practice), you will experience a lushous peaceful state of being that you will not want to leave. In this peaceful state, you then focus your mind (as best as ADDers are able) on a single point--either at a spot between the eyebrows, or you can visualize something of importance.

There is lots of relaxing (meditative) music you can listen to (either New Age Music or relaxing classical) that can help teach you to relax. That will help get your mind ready to plunge into deeper meditative waters of peace.

I had experienced positive benefits almost immediately at the job I was at. My abilities to focus on specific tasks was noticeably better. It did take a number of years to feel as though my entire brain was being lifted out of very dence smog--to where my overall awareness of my world was plain before my eyes. That has helped improve lateral thinking, reasoning, memory, communication skills, etc. Whatever practice someone uses for self-improvement--it could be running, writing, playing music, or meditation--when you begin to experience minor improvements, and you know it is directly related to that activity, it gives you enough confidence to push on a little more. Perhaps, nobody else will notice the difference (which was the case with my family), but I knew that my life was going to change forever. Now, in addition to meditation, I only need to take one Ritalin pill in the morning, and the overall focus I perceive works well.

Unfortunately, while I am now a completely different person than I was 18 years ago, my financial situation refuses to change. (i.e., I have no finanical life.) Now, I am seeking counsel on how I can move on from here. I've gotten very little support from family or social services.

I believe I can help others find their way, though meditation might not be the answer for them. I would be happy to discuss this issue further to those who are interested.

Peace,

Jay.
