Self-Talk

I am sitting at my part time job and I am feeling ****ed off about how boring the job is.

Then I noticed something. If I pay attention I can catch some of what I am saying to myself in the background. I call these my “hot” thoughts. And, I am just realizing how power they are. They say things like “this job sucks, “God I hate this” etc. And the result is that I become depressed and anxious.

If I start a new medication I find that for a couple of days these hot thoughts are replaced by more positive thoughts. Like, “this is no sweat, “this is great, no one bothers me” etc.

For example. A while back I tried flaxseed oil. For two days everything was great. No “hot thoughts”. I thought I had the best job in the world. Then sure enough the “hot thoughts” crept back in and once again I am miserable. It makes me wonder if my ADD problem is chemical or cognitive.

I was wondering if any one else noticed these type of thoughts and found a way to shut them up.

Thanks

I had really negative self talk for years. It took therapy, meds, and a lot of successes (such as grad school) to get myself over it. I had to start really believing the good self talk I was providing for myself. I needed some kind of proof. Good luck! Marie

I do know what you are talking about here and as Marie says it takes a lot of practice to turn these kinds of thoughts around. A lot of the negative thoughts I have are simply recordings of things said to me or said to myself over years and years.

You have made a good start, though, in being aware of your hot topics and starting to replace them with more positive thinking. Unfortunately, there isn't a magic solution, pill, or therapy that can "fix" this instantly. Patience and practice!

Hang in there!

Thanks Guys

This is such a sweet position and it's only 4 hours a day. I can do the simplest drawing and my boss acts like it's a masterpiece. Get this, he brings music in for me to listen to. Most of the companies I used to work for did not allow music even with headphones.
Also, I am running out of jobs that I list as ones that are too boring. We all can't be stunt pilots or find jobs that are "stimulating and challenging".

I wish I could say to myself, "I would like to do this kind of work" but when I try I come up blank. Sometimes I think that I just don't want to work...

I brought in six Stephen King audio books today. Hopefully they will help
